Ivory Tree Lodge

Sun City, South Africa

The hotel

This lodge is unique for so many reasons that you’ll begin to forget which one you like the best. For starters, it’s located within one of the world’s largest extinct volcanic complexes and is surrounded by numerous African native animals including: springbok, cheetah, rhino, elephant and lion. The Ivory Tree Lodge has also been upgraded to fully represent contemporary luxury without detracting from the natural environment. A large swimming pool and guest areas are designed to provide relaxation and relief for groups and individuals. Meal times can be enjoyed inside or outside and you’ll be amazed at the fine dining options. Two lounge areas and two bars, one of which serves cocktails, provide the perfect evening location from where to reflect on your day’s adventures in the bush. If you’re looking for further activities, other than a ‘Big Five’ safari, then why not try getting involved with something cultural including interactive drumming sessions.

Being in Joburg for the weekend between work meetings we decided to get away to the Pilanesberg. I’m thrilled we did! The staff at Ivory Tree are so welcoming, friendly, accommodating, caring. A special mention to Alice at reception. Nothing is too much trouble for the team at Ivory Lodge. Game viewing is always a gamble & we were incredibly lucky to follow a pride of lions being tracked by two dominant males from a different pride for 2 hours on a morning drive. An experience I’ll never forget. Thank you to our driver Jacques! Food was good, don’t expect fine dining, but it’s fresh, flavoursome, great variety for choices and the chefs care to ensure vegetables are crisp & not over cooked; fish & game are cooked to order. Rooms are well kept, spacious, balconies lovely to relax on, bath is luxurious, outdoor shower was a lovely addition but chilly mid winter. Communal areas are well laid out with 4-5 different areas: bar, pool, lapas, lounge with fire, outdoor with tv: all these allow for relaxation but with some space & privacy/personal touches. I didn’t try the spa but it looked great. I will definitely return. I’d recommend it if visiting the Pilanesberg. Read less

The food was great, always plenty of it, something for my vegetarian friend as well as meat eaters. As with any buffet if you go at peak times there's a bit of a delay but nothing of great concern. The room was a fabulous size, with the addition of a lovely deck area that we made good use of. The bathroom was huge and the highlight was the outdoor shower - extraordinary, even in the middle of winter. The game drives were well organised, blankets for cold mornings and evenings, fun and personable driver (big shout out to Desmond). We'd love to come back. Read less

Comfortable rooms with great outdoor showers and room service. Absolutely fabulous meals (breakfast and dinner buffet) with a wide selection of tastes and food types for every palette, campfires at night. However, without doubt the fantastic game ranger that accompanied us through the weekend (Evan) was the cherry on top. He is a very knowledgeable and interesting guide to the Park. He took us on great game drives in the morning and afternoon, instructed us as we drive, gave us total confidence as we sat close enough to hear the elephant’s stomach rumble, and laughed with us all. Evan truly ‘made’ our family weekend! Thank you Read less
