Doubletree By Hilton Stone Town

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The hotel

A stopover in Stone Town is a sure-fire way to add an authentic Zanzibar experience to your beach holiday – and DoubleTree by Hilton puts you a stone’s throw from all that’s happening in town. In the buzz of the meandering residential back streets, you’ll instantly feel part of the local scene, with the UNESCO World Heritage town’s sights, markets, and restaurants a stroll from your door. Stone Town’s also the starting point for many tours in Zanzibar, giving you extra scope to soak up island life. The local vibe continues with the hotel’s historic architecture, true Swahili styling, and homely touches like warm chocolate chip cookies on arrival. But there’s one treat in store the neighbours here won’t have – the fine sunset views from Taarab Restaurant & Bar, taking pride of place on the hotel’s rooftop.

For such an old property, (I think) it is overpriced (i.e. no swimming pool, very small fitness facility). However, it is strategically located in downtown with excellent service! Breakfast is good with friendly staffs.

It’s not exactly the most charming hotel in the world and it does feel criminally corporate for Zanzibar and its incredible atmosphere, but the rooms are big and clean, and the restaurant is ok. Very close to the Park Hyatt (great sundowner drinks) and the old town.

This hotel is located centrally in Stone Town. It has friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are clean and quite large for rooms too. Most importantly, it has the best restaurant in town (get the coconut crab soup!!)

Overall a good stay, compared to other hotels we have stayed at on the island, it's a true 4* hotel. However, the front desk staff were not welcoming, even standoffish at times. Disliked there was no "Do not disturb" door slips, and as a result, we were bothered by housekeeping in the morning, which was really annoying. The bathroom faucet is the worst design imaginable, unless you like getting showers while trying to wash your hands. The AirCon in the room was not refreshing, it was damp and humid, making the sheets, towels and our clothes all feel cold and wet. We stayed at their "sister hotel" during the first part of our trip, and the AC was crisp and refreshing, so it makes me believe this is an AC unit maintenance issue. The breakfast was pretty good. Their rooftop restaurant is nice and cozy, good views and good food options. Read less
