Doubletree By Hilton Stone Town

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The hotel

A stopover in Stone Town is a sure-fire way to add an authentic Zanzibar experience to your beach holiday – and DoubleTree by Hilton puts you a stone’s throw from all that’s happening in town. In the buzz of the meandering residential back streets, you’ll instantly feel part of the local scene, with the UNESCO World Heritage town’s sights, markets, and restaurants a stroll from your door. Stone Town’s also the starting point for many tours in Zanzibar, giving you extra scope to soak up island life. The local vibe continues with the hotel’s historic architecture, true Swahili styling, and homely touches like warm chocolate chip cookies on arrival. But there’s one treat in store the neighbours here won’t have – the fine sunset views from Taarab Restaurant & Bar, taking pride of place on the hotel’s rooftop.

We stayed at Double tree in Stone town. It was walking distance to the whole of the town. The wonderful alleyways to explore. Dharrsan market to venture into for spice. it was world of old , People are extremely polite. The roof top bars for the evening sunsets are glorious. The slave market has to be visited before you leave .

This hotel is beautifully restored, wonderfully staffed, tucked away in a perfect location, sparkling clean and all-around phenomenal. I recently stayed at this hotel for over a week as one of several colleagues on an evaluation project who called the hotel home in February 2020. What a gracious group of staff we found there, authentically personable and eager to accommodate our every need. After a long day of traveling to site visits across the island, our evaluation team would debrief in the hotel restaurant over freshly made juice served by a wonderfully kind and responsive service staff. Even though there is fantastic food throughout Stone Town, my colleagues and I often found ourselves returning to the hotel restaurant for dinner because it was phenomenal food. The breakfast, for example, exceeded every expectation - what a beautiful spread. But don't let the boutique nature of this hotel and restaurant suggest that it wouldn't be a great fit for business travelers - when we needed copies, the use of a large table to organize our papers or a late check out to accommodate a team meeting, Mary and Robert arranged for everything promptly and efficiently, and always with a smile. I am a professor from the US and at one point I had to teach a live online class at 2:30 in the morning Zanzibari time - the staff arranged for me to comfortably teach from the restaurant lounge, allowing me to engage with my students in the middle of the night without feeling the need to whisper. The rooms were impeccably cleaned - everything was in top shape and tastefully done, high quality amenities without being ostentatious. The same cleaner would visit our room each day and she was always eager to help with whatever we needed and would greet us warmly when we would run into her, asking if she could help us with anything else. At one point our drain seemed slow - we mentioned it to her and it was taken care of within the hour. In short, the hotel and especially the staff are amazing. I'm not a frequent reviewer, but this experience was so exceptional that I wanted to take the time to spread the word about this Stone Town gem. Read less

We spent only the nights here but the hotel staff made a huge impression. We needed to change our flights home, and the front desk and manager did everything necessary to help us. There is a great rooftop restaurant with wonderful views, and the hotel is on a very pretty square opposite a number of other hotels with sea facing terraces.
