Essque Zalu Zanzibar

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The hotel

Imagine watching dhows drift by as you dine above the Indian Ocean on a romantic jetty. Or cooking Swahili dishes with Chef Rose, as she shares recipes passed down through generations. Or experiencing a pampering Maasai Ritual, before sipping sundowners around an old Baobab tree, or along the wooden jetty. This hideaway delivers the real Zanzibar experience. Near the northern tip of the island and Nungwi village, it’s authentic from its lobby (set in the island’s highest makuti thatched hut) to its 48 suites and residences, each with dazzling ocean or garden views (and also a private deck or patio and plush bathroom in each detached suite). It may be utterly genuine, but Essque Zalu Zanzibar also provides those ‘musts’ every international island-hopper is after – like an oversized lagoon pool, a cocktail-driven poolside bar, and water sports like snorkelling and kayaking.

First of all, I want to thank the staff who made the effort to make our stay more enjoyable, to those who are dedicated to their work and are professional in what they do, I will name here Mosses, Mishani, Ulumbi, Zainab, Mery as well as to the others, many thanks. As for the hotel, I am deeply disappointed with the way it is offered to tourists. Do not take into consideration the photos posted, they are not related to the reality of January 2020. The hotel is old, unoccupied, everything seems to be approaching a long-awaited closing. The photos I post are edifying. In addition, every day came with an unpleasant surprise, respectively at dinner we were told that the dessert was over, breakfast was missing all the time, no eggs, no fruits, no toast machine, no yogurt , and there were no fruits as the supply is very low. Also, what is served at the table is in a 3-star hotel. Many other unpleasant surprises! We would not recommend this hotel to anyone. We are sorry for those wonderful people who work there. It is a "Kuna Matata" hotel. Read less

The hotel is luxurious and well situated in the clean Nungwi beach with an overlooking Jetty where dinner and parties are held. The hotel is well maintained and provides the best smelling soaps and fragrances at the cottages. The cottages are spacious and have a huge bathroom and also an indoor wardrobe with a balcony and relaxing bed at the patio. The cottages are also well placed, giving privacy to each guest. The food served is awesome, and has countless varieties every day- fresh juices, great variety of seafood (Crabs & Shrimps& fish) etc. The Hotel shuttles one to Kendwa rocks every day 3 times, where you experience the best private beach park in Nungwi. I liked the jetty dinner experience and the adult infinity pool (very spacious). Overall a great place for pictures and total relaxation with exquisite luxury especially for a couple. The hotel offers many spa experiences which are veeeryyyy relaxing and gives a 24hr gym with cold towels and water to freshen up :-). This Hotel is the best in Nungwi. Read less

The hotel was pretty quiet, so this was probably the most relaxing holidays I've had. It's nicely design, looking especially lovely and romantic in the evening. There is also jetty with a restaurant, a lovely spot for afternoon drink or dinner. It is also the best way to watch incredible sunset as you feel immersed in that boundless amount of sky and water. The beach is very small, which is a blessing, because you are not bothered but sellers of trips, souvenirs, mangoes, hats, marihuana and so on every 30 sec; neither tourist boats, party boats and ski jets are in front of it. However, if you wish for any of those, there is a big beach close to it, you can walk there by the coast or take taxi (this take longer because the roads are so bad that you can loose an elephant in on of the holes). The staff is incredibly friendly, helpful and relaxed, happy to talk to children and teach you Swahili. There is a big swimming pool (filled with sea water though). The barman makes cocktails with fresh fruits and they are amazing. We stayed in a ocean front villa, which was spacious with enormous ,comfortable bed. The villas are in the lush, wonderful gardens. The downside is food, it's terrible, unnecessary tried to be pushed as European,as nothing tastes as you know it. I was missing local options also. The quality is not great and without consistency. My daughter wanted chicken nuggets everyday and everyday it tasted and looked different. The better option for dinner is the jetty restaurant with grilled meat and fresh fish.We have taken the half board option as with terrible roads and lack of street lights and with a 3 years old it was convenient, but if you are expecting culinary delights, choose option without food or choose other hotel. There is also a great kids club but very worn out and without the qualified staff. Read less

Excellent atmosphere and experience, recommend to stay. Friendly staff, excellent rooms/villa, all done with thought and care. Food was great, evening with live music very pleasant. excellent pool area. Beach area through is difficult to access because of tides.
