Essque Zalu Zanzibar

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The hotel

Imagine watching dhows drift by as you dine above the Indian Ocean on a romantic jetty. Or cooking Swahili dishes with Chef Rose, as she shares recipes passed down through generations. Or experiencing a pampering Maasai Ritual, before sipping sundowners around an old Baobab tree, or along the wooden jetty. This hideaway delivers the real Zanzibar experience. Near the northern tip of the island and Nungwi village, it’s authentic from its lobby (set in the island’s highest makuti thatched hut) to its 48 suites and residences, each with dazzling ocean or garden views (and also a private deck or patio and plush bathroom in each detached suite). It may be utterly genuine, but Essque Zalu Zanzibar also provides those ‘musts’ every international island-hopper is after – like an oversized lagoon pool, a cocktail-driven poolside bar, and water sports like snorkelling and kayaking.

Having stayed at many hotels around the world, and just finishing 4 weeks of travelling in southern and Eastern Africa, this hotel is very disappointing. The initial impression is great, impressive foyer, beautiful pool and views. But look further than that and you find a place in need of significant maintenance, it looks very “tired”. The staff try their best but seem very inexperienced and many seem to have troubles with the level of English one would expect in an international hotel. It is quiet at the moment, probably less than 20 guests in the whole place, and the numerous staff are mainly standing around talking to themselves and appear bored. Food and beverage is a big issue. No breakfast buffet and no- one knows what cereals or yoghurts they have. Ask for juice and it appears at end of breakfast!! Very limited menu and no alterations. Main restaurant offers very standard ordinary choices, with a little more “ exotic” choices at Jetty restaurant. That is one thing but unforgivable that they can’t even cook the limited choices properly. Lamb so over cooked you cannot cut or chew it, vegetables so under- cooked they can’t be cut with a dinner knife. Much of the food, despite bing on a “ spice” island lacks much flavour or taste This is really disappointing having been recommended to stay here. Rooms are very nice but, again tired and in need of maintenance. Stains on couches etc. If I could be bothered we would move, but returning home in 2 days, never to return here. Read less

They both we very professional and friendly. Angelo came in on his day off to prepare and serve us a private dinner for my husband's 50th birthday. We had a surprise party for him in the Mosha Cooking Studio! For dessert, the band, dancer and most of the staff came in to sing and dance and present the birthday dessert. It couldn't have been a more exceptional evening! Thank you for making our trip to Zanzibar amazing! The Walters Read less
