Essque Zalu Zanzibar

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The hotel

Imagine watching dhows drift by as you dine above the Indian Ocean on a romantic jetty. Or cooking Swahili dishes with Chef Rose, as she shares recipes passed down through generations. Or experiencing a pampering Maasai Ritual, before sipping sundowners around an old Baobab tree, or along the wooden jetty. This hideaway delivers the real Zanzibar experience. Near the northern tip of the island and Nungwi village, it’s authentic from its lobby (set in the island’s highest makuti thatched hut) to its 48 suites and residences, each with dazzling ocean or garden views (and also a private deck or patio and plush bathroom in each detached suite). It may be utterly genuine, but Essque Zalu Zanzibar also provides those ‘musts’ every international island-hopper is after – like an oversized lagoon pool, a cocktail-driven poolside bar, and water sports like snorkelling and kayaking.

So beautiful! Amazing views, nice staff and great pools. One of the most beautiful places I’ve been! The food... stay away. Super low quality and very expensive drinks/snacks. So come here for the water, but anything eatable is really low quality.

We've been at Zalu for 5 nights from 30/12 to 4/01. Our experience was very bad, starting from the receptionist who was very unpolite and disinterested (he played mobile games while talking) which was definitely not acceptable. Our room was large enough, quite comfortable but nothing special for a 5*, considering the poor service. Everyday we had to claim for towels or bath gel. Awful wifi connection, working only at the reception and sometimes at the pool, which is the main living area during the day since there's no usable beach outside. Little deck chairs comparing to the number of guests. Towels are not changed, they just fix them on chairs. You may use the previous guest's one, without knowing that. Food is terribly poor, I never saw a service like this in my life. Little choice, food badly cooked especially the grilled one, fish is always raw and meat was burnt all the time. When you get to have it since the grill man was very lazy. The menu for our last night was: carrot salad with wurstel, beetroot, lettuce and a strange mix of onions and calamari - like chewing gum - for starters. Plain rice, boiled potatoes, fried potatoes, beans, a sort of tortilla stuffed with chicken and some veggies. It was drowned with oil. Terrible. Burnt meat and raw fish always available, cooker permitting. They charge 6 USD for a beer and 4 USD for a bottle of water. Ridiculous Finally, you're supposed to sign everything you take from bar, also during main courses, even water. But they don't, and when you go to clear the bill, they'll try to charge not signed bills on your room. There's plenty of valuable and well run hotels in Zanzibar, if you want to enjoy your stay consider another place. They don't care any guests, they just care money and the way to get more, in a very bad and unprofessional way. Read less

Amazing location, beautiful pool landscape and restaurant. Even if you are not staying at Essque the sundowners, the restaurants and the poolside are a perfect way to end your evenings in nungwi. It cost 20 dollars to use the pool. The walkway from the poolside to the fish restaurant and down to the beach absolutely breathtaking

The rooms are beautiful, very spacious, excellent A/C and fans, bathroom huge, bed magnificent and comfortable, walk in wardrobe and good channels on the TV (premier league matches). The staff were extremely helpful and so friendly. Juma was so nice to work with and he organised a fantastic trip snorkelling and swimming with dolphins. The food was delicious, buffet style breakfast and dinner, with so many options to choose from. Live bands at dinner time was also a nice touch. The swimming pools were amazing, so big and with the infinity effect you could spend hours relaxing in the water staring out at the breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. Would highly recommend staying in Essque Zalu and we cannot wait to return some day. Read less

Great hospitality, good food, options that are enjoyable such as the Sugar Cane Juice by the pool, the nice DJ playing there, the Masai dance. People were great, we want to thank specially Mariam at the Reception, Rahul the food and bev manager that has been the smiley face of our stay, efficient and always available, and the amazing cook that made always his special fish sauces. Overall a great escape, a nice way to close 2020, and highly recommendable. We want to thank everyone that helped us, despite the last minute troubles we entered into, by forgetting our passports at the hotel. Having this kind of service, is what makes a Hotel great and flexible really. Read less
