Zuri Zanzibar Hotel & Resort

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The hotel

The beach steals the show at Zuri Zanzibar, with its cashmere-soft sands unaffected by the island's tides. But, as you make your way to its private shore, the Zuri throws many distractions your way. There are the winding paths through its spice gardens, where private pods promise quiet meditation and Swahili cookery lessons. There are the massages of MAUA Wellness. There are the tempting scents from its restaurants and bars. And there are the sumptuous suites and villas (where an All Inclusive upgrade can give you added indulgences and seclusion). And finally, just moments from Kendwa Beach's sands, a sleek infinity pool tempts you in for a dip with ocean views.

I understand that we would find island bugs in the room but we found two cockroaches which is not OK. The food is included in half board but except for breakfast it's poor value and tasteless. When we tried to speak to the GM about our issues, all he said was 'OK so what do you want me to do about it now?' Not the kind of reply you expect from a five star resort. We were not expecting anything but a simple apology so we could have left happy. We had booked five rooms to celebrate a birthday and the whole experience created a real damper on the trip. Gorgeous resort, some great staff members but poorly managed from up top. Read less

The hotel structure lies nicely in the midst of a tropical garden, which provides every lovely made bungalow with privacy. We enjoyed every corner of it, be it the beautiful beach area, the pool site, the spice garden, or the bars and restaurants. It‘s truly a tropical paradise. The staff and the management made us feel very welcome and took care of our little requests very personally. The food at restaurants be it the main, the pool or the beach, we found it very good. The resort also provided for entertainment despite the special times like live guitar duo playing international and African ballads, or bonfires by the beach with the joy of a fabulous cocktail watching the sunset. In all this is honestly a remarkable place. Read less

Overall Experience: My wife and I stayed at Zuri Zanzibar for five amazing nights during our honeymoon. The best way I can sum up our experience is that we tried to extend our stay but were not able to change our flight. This resort is incredible. From the moment you enter the resort, you feel so relaxed. The hotel is also very eco friendly and supports the local town. The staff, the landscape, the food and the activities make it perfect for a couple or family. I would give it many more stars than five if I could. The Staff: Josh was an amazing host. He went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. We enjoyed several conversations with him during our trip and loved getting to know him. He found several opportunities during our stay to enhance our experience and left us feeling incredibly grateful that we chose Zuri for our honeymoon. On the way out he told us the Zuri philosophy, “Guests arrive as strangers, leave as friends and return as family”. We hope to one day return as family and relive the magic. Said and Bora took great care of us at the poolside restaurant. Every time we arrived they welcomed us with excitement and provided perfect service. They were friendly and made us want to come back. Oscar seemed to always be close by. Whether we were enjoying breakfast, watching the sunset on the beach or getting a drink at the bar he was always stopping by to greet us and make sure we had everything we needed. The Room: This room is in a class of its own. I couldn’t possibly describe how much we loved it. The view was exactly what you would dream of for your honeymoon. A deck with a jacuzzi overlooking a beach with a view of the ocean. Everything else was perfect as well. The bed, the bathroom, the decor. There were so many amazing details that made this the best room we have ever stayed in. The Food: Five star dining for every meal. At Uppendo the chef prepares a different tasting each night with 4 to 5 courses. We were so excited walking to the restaurant every night to see what he had in store. The seafood and beef were always cooked perfectly. The presentation was creative and beautiful. The combination of ingredients were always well done. The breakfast buffett was equally amazing and I did not get tired of enjoying a similar spread each day. It contained everything you might hope for including sparkling wine which I made sure to enjoy every morning. Read less

COVID-19 Measures: The hotel takes temperature readings upon entry, social distancing measures are in place, staff always wear masks, guests are provided with free masks, hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes. The measures are well enforced and the guests health and safety is taken seriously. Stay: Zuri is a beautiful and breathtaking resort. The resort is beautifully designed and well laid out. The rooms are stand alone bungalows and we experienced a great sense of privacy. The beautifully landscaped lush green gardens just create a great sense serenity and tranquility. Zuri is Instagram galore. The beach in front of Zuri is probably the most beautiful beach in Zanzibar: White sand and clear blue waters. The beach is simply breathtaking. The staff at Zuri are very friendly and welcoming. They always greet guests with a smile. Nina, Oscar, William, FB Manager and other staff members (Omar, Hussein and the lady making the omelettes) always greeted us and made sure that we are comfortable. The room (we stayed in a garden bungalow) was spacious and well designed. The room has beautiful art pieces and furniture that add a great African touch. The bed is huge and very very comfortable. The bathroom is amazing as well and there is a great outdoor shower. The rooms are well air conditioned and there is an amazing energy efficient Evening Breeze air conditioner that only cools the bed area. The room was thoroughly cleaned twice a day. The room is always spotless. The resort has a super fast WiFi connection. This is probably one of the fastest WiFi connections in Zanzibar. The food was such a gastronomical experience. We loved the fact that the set menu at Upendo restaurant is different everyday. We enjoyed anticipating what will be served for dinner. The breakfast buffet (the waiters dish up for you based on what you want) was just superb. There was a great selection of different types of food, fruits, pastries, juice etc. Maisha restaurant has a great menu as well. We enjoyed alternating between the restaurants. We also enjoyed the Swahili cooking class with Chef John and spice garden tour. The Dinner by Design on the beach was the highlight of our trip. We enjoyed the sundowners at Bahari bar. Especially on the days when there is a DJ. This was a great way to end of the day enjoying a great cocktail. We celebrated a special anniversary during our stay and we received a complimentary bottle of bubbles. We also received a complimentary sundowner cocktail as part of a promotion that the resort is running for all stays in August. We also enjoyed our spa treatment. The therapists are really experienced and we got a free gift. We also enjoyed the Zuri Signature sunset cruise and a snorkeling trip. The resort has so many activities that one can do. We enjoyed every moment of our stay at Zuri. And everything was just that, Zuri (beautiful). We had a memorable, fun and relaxing stay and we’ll definitely go back one day. Read less

To start in the current times people care about covid so to say from start to finish masks, face shields, gloves, loads of antibacing is happening non stop. They go the extra mile. To start in the current times people care about covid so to say from start to finish masks, face shields, gloves, loads of antibacing is happening non stop. They go the extra mile. To the hotel itself. Its simply stunning. I would challenge anyone to come here and not fall in love with it. The pool area is incredible. The beach area will blow you away and the water really is as blue as the pics you see online. The rooms are perfect and lovely! We had our family come across to get married here and from start to finish they went the extra mile to sort everything. They even upgraded us to one of their nicest rooms as a lovely gesture. The wedding bbq was some of the best food we have had in our lives!! A note on our wedding. William is the wedding co-ordinator and he worked really closely with Katie to plan the wedding. He made sure everything was smooth planned and easy for us so we could really just enjoy the day. We actually ended up with rain on our wedding day and the hotel offered to move it to the next day. It was a load of hassle for them but nothing was too much of a problem! William and his team are just amazing. If you want a wedding abroad you should really consider doing it here! The sunset downers are well worth it and the sunsets here are incredible. The whole beach are and the beach bar is so well set up. If you want that perfect beach shot with white sand and blue water then this is the beach to get it! All the sun loungers are nice and far apart so feels private even when more people are at the hotel. Security wise If you stay on The private beach the local sellers wont come and bother you. There are loads of staff patrolling to keep them away. Something worth noting as we stayed in other hotels on the island many get loads of seaweed floating up and it really does spoil some of the other beaches at low tide. Zuris beach never gets like this at all! So the view is always perfect even at low tide. So now to the only constructive feedback. The quality of the food here is again amazing. We loved it the whole time we stayed. That said at times you don't get exactly what you ask for and one time some dishes came out a bit cold. The staff work really hard and its just not every single persons english is perfect so they dont know what you mean when you want to alter elements of the dishes. In all fairness though when we travel to other countries round the world you just should expect this. We cant speak their language so why should theirs be perfect? If you do go its just worth double checking they really understood what you wanted to minimise the errors. This also only really happens if you are a fussy eater and changing things. If you just order whats on the menu its always perfect! Lastly they do chill their redwine. Not the end of the world but if you like your red at room temp like most Europeans just ask them to get a bottle out the fridge before you go down for dinner as even in these temps it takes a while to warm up. Lastly two people stood out from the crowd on our trip. William for plan ing our wedding. He was a hero. Thanks so much for all the help william! And the other being Bora. She works in the restaurant and if shes looking after you then you get perfect service! Her English is amazing and shes so kind and funny. She even predicts what you want to drink in the mornings and gets it there as you sit down. Zuri, you have an amazing member of staff in Bora! Please look after her as she really brightens up the hotel and make our stay even better! Thanks so much Bora!! Read less
