An excellent introduction to the safari world, this 5-day itinerary takes in Lakes Nakuru and Naivasha en route to the world-famous Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tuesday

Jumbo and warm welcome to Kenya! This morning you will be met at Nairobi airport on arrival by our uniformed staff from Rhino Safaris and transferred to the Jacaranda Hotel or similar for an overnight stay. Spend the day at leisure, or we highly recommend the optional excursion to the Rothschild Giraffe Centre or the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage with a delicious lunch at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden.

Day 2: Wednesday

Pick up from the hotel in your 4x4 safari vehicle with open top roof for game viewing and head north into the Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru (approximately 3 hours), where you may spot flamingos and pelicans depending on their migratory patterns. Enjoy a game-drive in Nakuru National Park, home to rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo and numerous species of plain game. Lunch will be at Lake Nakuru Lodge. Then continue on to Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge or similar for dinner and overnight. (B/D)

Day 3: Thursday

After breakfast, head for the Masai Mara (approximately 4-5 hours), Kenya’s premier wildlife reserve. The Masai Mara is picture book Africa; endless plains punctuated by flat-top acacia trees and home to an array of wildlife. Every year the reserve plays host to one of the world’s great wildlife spectacles, the annual wildebeest migration. Over 1.4 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators, migrate over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain-ripened grass. After lunch, relax before embarking on an afternoon game-drive. Stay for 2 nights in the Mara Simba Lodge or similar. (B/L/D)

Day 4: Friday

Today, enjoy a morning and afternoon game-drive and the opportunity to spot Africa’s ‘Big Five’ - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. (B/L/D)

Day 5: Saturday

Alas, your adventures are over and it is time to head back to Nairobi arriving around lunch time (approximately 4-5 hours) for your onward flight arrangements or we highly recommend extending your stay with a few nights on the beautiful island of Zanzibar or Mombasa. (B) Please note: if you needed to leave any luggage in Nairobi your driver will stop and collect it today from the Jacaranda Hotel.

Pre/Post Tour Options

The first day of the tour is at leisure but if you wanted to arrive earlier extra nights are available at the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi. We recommend a beach stay in Zanzibar or Mombasa after this safari.

GMT +2 hours (summer) +3 hours (winter).

  • Shared vehicle transport for the group in a 7 seat safari Land Cruiser with an excellent local driver/guide
  • Sightseeing as detailed including entrance fees, park fees and game-drives
  • Road taxes, parking fees and fuel surcharges.

Tour exclusions

  • International flight with Kenya Airways in economy class, including all UK and overseas airport taxes and applicable fuel surcharges
  • Flight upgrades and airport transfers in the UK
  • Insurance
  • Items of a personal nature such as drinks, laundry or tips and gratuities
  • The required Kenyan visa
  • Anything not detailed on the itinerary.

Accommodation

Occasionally we may need to substitute one or more of the lodges with that of a similar standard, also adverse weather conditions could mean a lodge or itinerary needs to be altered.

Transportation

We use specially designed and strengthened, modern 4x4 safari Land Cruisers which have large pop-up roofs for extended wildlife viewing and photography. Safari vehicles have 7 seats, all of which are window seats, so you are guaranteed a great view.

Journey times

Kenya in a vast country and hence journey times between resorts/towns can at times be long. Journey times are listed in the itinerary and are approximate.

Luggage

We recommend taking soft sided holdalls as this can be transported more easily in the 4x4 vehicles. Excess luggage can be left in Nairobi (a local nominal charge may apply). We recommend packing one bag between you for the safari and a second for your beach stay which can remain in Nairobi to be collected on return.

Group size

There is a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 7 people per vehicle.

Depending on when you are due to travel, your holiday may be affected and we’ll email you to let you know as least 21 days before travel.

For extra piece of mind, new bookings made before 30 September 2020 for travel up 30 April 2021 also have the flexibility to amend free of charge. If you need to change don’t worry, you can move your holiday as far out as 31 December 2021 subject to availability.

Payment flexibility


Don’t worry if you’ve missed a payment or just need a little more time to pay; we have options available to help you. If your holiday is going ahead as planned, you can continue to pay for your holiday in Manage my booking, even if travelling in less than 12 weeks. If you’re unsure, you can delay any additional payments by choosing a new time to travel by requesting a call back in Manage My booking for one of our team to look at options. If your holiday is more than 6 months away, you may wish to set up a Direct Debit to spread the cost. This can be arranged whilst rebooking or afterwards in Manage my booking.

We're flexible with your holiday plans


We understand that you may wish to change your holiday plans and we appreciate the need for flexibility.

You're holiday is going ahead as planned


If we haven’t notified you of any changes, your holiday will be going ahead as planned but if you prefer to move your holiday to a later time we can help. You can call our team on 0344 472 9499 who can look at options for you.

Payments are being prioritised based on when the request was made, working in order from March 2020 onwards. We will always try to process refunds at the earliest opportunity, for requests before August our maximum timeframe is 120 days. As we are steadily reducing the maximum processing time for each new request, for refund requests made in August, we expect the maximum processing time to be 80 days, from the date the refund is requested. For those requesting a refund in September, we expect it to be processed within a maximum of 60 days, and then reduce to 30 days for refunds requested in October, before returning to normal levels.

To finalise the amendment, one of our customer advisors will phone you. We need to work through amend requests in departure date order so we can prioritise those with the most imminent travel plans, so you may have a longer wait than usual until we’re able to ring you back. We will help everyone that wants to move their holiday.
