The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls by Anantara

Livingstone, Zambia

The hotel

Bathed in the shade of Acacia trees, the raw splendour of this special environment blends beautifully with this exceptional hotel. Reaching new levels of luxury and sophistication, this is the place for the discerning traveller, with every detail crafted to capture all the opulence of a bygone Africa. Set inside the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, zebra, giraffe and monkey roam freely through the grounds. Stretched along the forested banks of the River Zambezi, you can pass lazy days on the magnificent sun deck overlooking the river with the deck seemingly within touching distance of the rainbow-infused mist of the magnificent falls. Enjoy a sumptuous traditional high tea served every afternoon on the terrace taking in that view again, you may even catch a glimpse of hippos. The thatched-roof buildings have handsome rooms with cream-coloured walls and dark wood, and they all point the right way - towards the Zambezi. The restaurant serves renowned international cuisine and the Anantara Spa offers all kinds of treatments including Ukuchina - a traditional Zambian massage.

What a way to arrive at a hotel, as we turned onto the entrance drive, there were two majestic giraffes welcoming you to the hotel. Then came the drumming, dancing and singing by a group who were enthusiastic and fabulous, followed by the hand massage and cool drink. We were taken on a golf buggy to a beautiful, well appointed room with balcony looking out at the Zambezi river, zebras wandering around the gardens, baboons in the trees. We had a lovely butler, unfortunately, i can't remember her name (it started with Kam or Kab), thank you especially for replenishing the insect repellant in the room (a nice touch from the hotel). We could walk to the falls as many times as we wished and what a sight it was. The hotel is very colonial, a place to simply be - peaceful and a genteel way to start our South African trip. Staff are very helpful and extremely friendly - thank you Alice and Gilbert. There are a few little things that could be fixed to ensure a full five star rating - we always ordered wine by the bottle, but it was rare for a waiter to be on hand to pour the wine after the first glass, there were never any nibbles brought with the wine which is odd for a 5 star hotel. Once we ordered Rose wine and it took an age to find it, the main bar appeared to have none and in the end Gilbert from the beach bar found it for us. Despite the rooms having lovely balconies, you cannot sit and eat there. We ordered food to our room and all of a sudden the baboons appeared, it was quite scary the speed at which they arrived! Perhaps it would be wise to put some sort of wire mesh around the balconies so you can actually eat in peace. Another is the internet connections at reception, particularly when trying to settle your bill. It is embarrassing when your card appears to be declined for no other reason than the connection. I must admit the staff were very apologetic but it is not what you expect from a hotel of this calibre. That said Dorothy's team do a fab job and the things mentioned above can all be easily fixed. Thank you Team Royal Livingstone, we had a lovely time and would not hesitate to return. Read less

The hotel was amazing with Zebra and Giraffes wandering around outside your room, drinking from the garden fountains whilst your sitting their eating your dinner ! You can walk to the Victoria Falls which is a short distance away and get free entrance. The Hotel rooms are very beautiful and comfortable, there is live music whilst you eat your meals and the staff were all very attentive. It was just perfect , we would love to go back and spend more time there. Thanks to Priscilla and all the reception staff for looking after us. Read less

This by far was the best experience that I've add staying at a hotel. Where do I begin...Connie Muyaule provides exceptional and top notch customer service upon arrival. She was warm, professional, inviting, and really made it her priority to ensure my stay was a great experience. Connie Muyaule is the reason why I will absolutely without a second thought return to the Royal Livingstone Hotel! The hotel is beautiful with lush green grass, great food (the Chef was very accommodating to my vegan preferences as it pertains to food) and the hotel also has Zebra's onsite too which was great to capture nice pictures. Zambia has a gem in the Royal Livingstone Hotel. Thank you Connie Muyaule for the wonderful customer service! I will be sure to let friends and family know that when traveling to Zambia stay at the Royal Livingstone Hotel and specifically look for Connie, she'll ensure your stay is exceptional! Read less
