I can't recommend this hotel enough. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome by all members of staff who genuinely care about you having an amazing experience. The hotel itself is breathtaking but the staff really do take this hotel to a whole other level. We had such a romantic stay but its great for families too. We went for the Ocean Wing room with the balcony and outdoor jacuzzi and it was worth every penny. Ocean Wing guests have exclusive access to one of the pools on the resort, but we spent so much time in our room that we barely used it. The maid must have been in our room 2-3 times each day checking that we had everything we needed and they even kept topping us up with free beer and pringles - it's the little touches that make this hotel so special! I asked for a room that was high so they gave us a top floor room - the view is insane. The beach was stunning and the sunsets are better than we've ever experienced. There are a lot of options for dining, including traditional Malaysian food, Italian food, Indian food and Japanese food. We loved sitting in the Malaysian restaurant next to the Garden Wing pool during the day with a drink. The hotel offers so many activities that we didn't get chance to do half of the ones we would have liked to. We opted for the firefly cruise on our first night which was amazing. Despite a full moon apparently dimming their lights from their usual "Christmas tree" appearance on trees, we saw lots of fireflies and they fly so slowly you can even catch them and set them free again. We also did the sunrise "breakfast with a view". Despite it not being sunny (it rained!) it was one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide for the breakfast was Dino and he was lovely. He told us about his work with the orang-utans and fended the pesky monkeys off when they were trying to steal our watermelon! Even without paying for any extra activities you see so much wildlife around the resort. We loved watching strange birds we hadn't seen before (in the UK we're used to mainly pigeons...) and saw lots of insects like a preying mantis which was cool. You can also do Sandakan (to visit the orangutan sanctuary in Sepilok) and back in a day using this hotel as a base with internal flights, although it was a 3:30am start and we got back at around 9pm it was well worth it. We also used airport transfers to and from the hotel several times and each time we were provided with water and a really comfortable air conditioned vehicle. I cannot recommend this hotel enough. For a laugh me and my boyfriend searched if anyone had written a bad review about this hotel (there's always some people who can never be pleased) and honestly I think they were on another planet. Best hotel we've ever stayed in and we're already planning our next trip! Read less

We read the reviews, we looked at the hotel images and we have to agree with previous guests. This place is FAB! The staff are truly wonderful and the whole experience has been amazing. The Shangri-La Rasa Ria hotel should be very proud of all of its staff😬😬✌️We will definitely be back! Read less

We spent a week at Shangri-la Rasa Ria for our honeymoon (after spending a busy week in Singapore). The resort, room and amenities were beautiful and well-maintained. We decided to spend our time relaxing so we can't comment on the excursions and activities, however our spa experience was great. The staff at the resort were also very friendly, helpful and professional. We would highly recommend the Japanese restaurant - we loved it so much we ended up eating there three times. As well as the delicious food, the chefs were knowledgeable and put on a great show for diners. The only thing that saddened us was that while the resort itself had a very clean beach, some areas nearby were polluted with plastic. Of course, this is a current worldwide issue and we saw resort staff trying to clear up some of it. The company itself seems to take environmental responsibility very seriously (water comes in glass bottles, there was no plastic cutlery to be seen). Overall a great vacation, highly recommended and well done on the conversation and environmental work. Read less

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights for the start of our honeymoon in Borneo. We upgraded to the Ocean wing and very glad we did - the room was huge with a lovely balcony complete with bath! We didn’t expect a fanfare when we arrived but after 25 hours travelling we weren’t even offered a glass of water. Our cases didn’t arrive with us in Borneo (came about 4 hours later) and I was desperate to brush my teeth. We asked about toothbrush and toothpaste to be told we could buy from the shop. I was disappointed with this as a response. Some of the staff were excellent in catering for our dietary requirements (I’m veggie and husband is allergic to garlic!) but the Oceano restaurant flat out refused to make a vegetarian meal for me...being an Italian restaurant I would have thought it would have been easy? Breakfast was a bit manic, as others have said, flies over the food and one day we ordered tea and coffee that just never arrived. The sunset was beautiful but we found no real atmosphere at the hotel and too isolated for us. A huge beach with nothing at all on It also seems a waste. We did the jungle walk and our guide was excellent, with beautiful views of Mt Kinabalu. Overall we wouldn’t stay here again. All Staff should operate at a 5 star level and not just some. Read less

We stayed in an ocean wing room with a bath tub on the balcony. The room was huge, very clean and welcoming. The views cannot be described and have to be seen to be believed. The food at breakfast, lunch and dinner was all absolutely great, with the service from every member of staff excellent. The garden wing pool looked very busy with not much space between the sun beds, however, the ocean wing pool was a lot more spacious and quieter. The ocean wing pool does need a clean though. We're hoping to return very soon as on the whole the hotel was excellent albeit expensive and we're hoping to spend more time exploring the reserve this time. Read less
