Spent 10 wonderful nights at this fantastic resort in a luxurious Ocean View room and looked after by some of the best staff I've ever experienced. Firstly a bit of background .. the resort is split into two wings, the Ocean View Wing and the Garden Wing. If you've booked the Garden Wing you are not able to take breakfast in Oceana Restaurant or use the Ocean Wing pool, sunbeds or Jacuzzi. If you've booked the Ocean Wing you can use any and all of the hotels facilities. Our room was spacious with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, bathroom with shower cubicle, double sink and enclosed wc. The balcony is extremely spacious with a daybed, table and 2 chairs and a two person bathtub (almost big enough to swim in). It felt so decadent relaxing in the tub as dusk fell, just gazing at the wonderful sunsets. Must admit though that the balcony is a real sun trap and the afternoon heat was sometimes too much to bear. A nice touch was the complimentary 2 cans of beer, soft drinks, Oreo biscuits, cashew nuts, Pringles and fresh fruit which was replenished daily. We took breakfast in the Oceano Restaurant each day and the choice of menu items was more than adequate and catered for Western, Chinese, Korean and Malaysian clients. It was unusual trying the Korean or Chinese dim sum breakfasts, but we generally stuck with fresh fruit, muesli, eggs, tomatoes or pancakes, croissants or toast. We had booked the half board package which meant you ate in the buffet restaurants Tepi Laut or Coffee Terrace. The resort also has Oceana Italian, Kozan Teppan-Yaki, Naan Indian and Golfers Terrace (at the golf club) restaurants which if you ate in those you had an allowance of 100 ringgits per person against the cost. We found Borneo in March/April so hot and humid that as a westerner your appetite is somewhat suppressed, so that most of the time a main course and occasional dessert sufficed which generally was within our allowance. All of the restaurants are really good and we never had any cause to leave food or complain. Executive Chef Philip Birmingham seemed to be everywhere ensuring the hotels high food standards were maintained. Obviously alcohol isn't included in the allowance and is a tad expensive, mainly due to the 30% tax the government has slapped onto alcohol. A nice touch though for Ocean Wing guests is that from 5.00 to 6.00pm each day complimentary beer and wines were served in one of the lounge areas, accompanied musically by a house trio (very happy fun guys) who also visited and played in the various restaurants. Tepi Laut also hosted occasional evening shows, although we rarely watched them. The pool area and terraces are spacious and the sunbeds comfortable and not crammed in, so you always felt as if you had sufficient space around you. The pool was always supervised by at least 2 lifeguards, who kept a watchful eye on the younger guests and occasional older guests. The hotel Lizard kept people amused with its occasional foray into the pool and Jacuzzi and its the first time we've ever seen a chicken begging for food on the breakfast area external terrace. The pool area is served by a bar and a lunch ordering system which was delivered from the Oceano Restaurant. We must be creatures of habit as our usual sunbed spot was laid out ready for us each morning by 'uncle' Jonny. There always seemed to be available sunbeds through the day, each with shade via a large parasol. The hotel has the largest beach we've ever been on (also with the hottest sand). It was at least 130 metres from the hotel grassed area to the sea, although it made for an extremely pleasurable early morning walk along the shore line. I never spotted anyone using the sunbeds on the beach and trying to walk on the sand at midday you'd understand why. My only disappointment was that we couldn't swim in the sea as it was box jellyfish season and apparently a sting could prove fatal to anyone of advancing years. The hotel has a really good adventure centre and managed Nature reserve. We had the early morning breakfast at Lookout point (which meant getting up at 4.30 for a 5.30 start), it was a great experience and if you're lucky (we were not), you get a visit from the local Macaque monkeys, the afternoon canopy walk was an experience and we took the kayak adventure which was a bit of a struggle for me paddling back up the river against the flow but enjoyable all the same. The hotel seems to be a golfers paradise and although we don't play hired a golf buggy so we could drive round the course perimeter on a wildlife spotting trip. Otters are everywhere and if you're lucky, like we were, will spot hornbills or a bearcat. We loved our stay and the staff are amazing, staff you've never seen before refer to you by name........, I don't know how they do it!!! Front desk and lobby staff were brilliant, especially Sopry who was always on hand to sort things out or call a buggy to transport you around the hotel. Lastly due to my clumsiness I had to visit the Medical Centre for attention to a sliced knee which needed dressing and again the staff on duty both days were very professional (and the cost was less than £10). Overall a great and relaxing vacation resort which we'd love to return to one day in the future. Read less

This resort is stunningly natural and beautiful. The people are the friendliest people in the World and cannot do enough for you. There are numerous places to eat quality food, although expect to pay high prices. The drinks were expensive. That said, there are options on a moderate budget. The sunset bar is idyllic and has happy hour drinks from 3-9pm daily where you can also eat at reasonable prices selecting from the a la Carter menu from the restaurant next door or the room service menu. This was a good discovery and enabled a balance between special dining and nice reasonable dining. The ability to pay less than £3 for drinks instead of about £8 whilst eating the same food was a boon. Fabulous place and people though. The weather was great whilst we were there at the start of April, which makes a difference Read less

The staff are SO lovely, from managers to cleaners. The food is great - even if you are a fussy eater like me. A number of different eateries. My favourite is the Tepi Laut - although a little expensive, you select exactly what you would like to eat and take it along to the person you would like to cook it for you, giving them instructions on how to cook it! When you have gorged yourself and are fit for bursting, you can then go and choose from an array of deserts and fruit and maybe even watch a traditional show. You may choose to frequent the lounge, where you can get ' in room service' for your meal. This may be a little cheaper. Then there is lounge restraunt downstairs which has a buffet meal for you to select from. Breakfast is also served here for the garden view guests. Outside, in the morning, the food attracts flies - yuk - BUT I found that by covering my food with a napkin, I didn't get any. Simple (and I'm fussy)! Roll on next year. Read less

Although large the hotel is well set out and you are not aware of this as an issue Garden wing and pool is best Good restaurants and facilities The staff are very helpful and professional Beach is vast and clean but beware of jelly fish and often a long distance to the sea - stay by the pool!
