Island Shangri-La Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China

The hotel

The Island Shangri-La has captured the glamour and glitz of bygone Hong Kong perfectly. It comes filled with decadent extras and a subtle refined demeanour, which quietly prove it’s a little more special than your standard city pad. We’re talking colossal chandeliers, a multi-storey silk painting, complimentary luxuries for Horizon Club guests in its club lounge, a serene outdoor pool fringed by skyscrapers, and huge picture windows framing views of the harbour or Victoria Peak. Its eight dining choices range from Michelin starred feasts and an ward-wining grill to casual pastries but, linked to the Pacific Place mall, its location also puts you among the island’s finest dining venues, as well as premier shopping and cultural attractions.

We were visiting Hong Kong on a joint business and pleasure trip and after a lot of review research decided on staying at the Island Shangri-La. There were positives and negatives about our stay. Check in was a bit stressful as we’d made our booking through booking.com and the receptionist tried to charge us for our stay which we’d already paid for, so we were made to feel a bit like second class guests. We then went to our harbour view room but we were disappointed as the window was condensed outside so we couldn’t see the view. The room however was as luxurious as you would expect from a 5 star hotel. The beds are super comfortable and in the morning the window cleared and the view is spectacular. We used the pool at night and after a long days work it is a wonderful experience with all the buildings lit up around you as you swim. The location is excellent as it’s so central and close to transport. Check out as check in was stressful again as they tried to charge us for our stay even though it had been prepaid. We left with a slight feeling of being undervalued as guests. I think booking directly through the hotel would be a better experience even though the rates are the same. Read less

Fantastic hotel. Management are excellent because everything, and I mean everything, works beautifully. Every detail is in check. Everyone working at the hotel, at all levels, are superb. A true 5 star stay. They even surprised us for our 9 year old's birthday with a cake, balloon, cards, photos and lots of attention. 6 stars out of 5

Nice restaurant options from casual to expensive French on top floor with great views. The big negative for me was the disappointing room. It is clearly old and in need of renovation. It smelled very musty and made my allergies act up. There were also many stains on the carpet, and skirt, furniture and even on the walls??! I asked for an upgrade to club level but was told it would be an extra 800hkd per night which seemed ridiculous since I was already paying a surprising high rate. Wanted to like it more and it has potential to be much more, just needs some attention and investment to upgrade. Read less

The room was huge, with a large comfy bed and lots of wardrobe space. Plenty of choice of tea and coffee and a nicely stocked mini bar, and we were brought jasmine tea & warm flannels when we arrived. The bathroom was fab, with a bath and separate walk in shower, l’occitane toiletries (that were replenished several times in our 2 night stay) and a tv! The staff were courteous & helpful and always on hand. We ate in the Chinese restaurant and the food was very good, but nothing could match the amazing breakfast, which offered a huge range of food from pastries, bacon & eggs to dumplings, noodles & rice dishes. We would definitely stay here again. Read less

My previous experience of other Shanghai-La hotels has been extremely good and this one did not disappoint. It’s well located, the rooms are large and well equipped, the are a variety of restaurants and the staff are all extremely well trained - courteous and efficient. I shall definitely stay here again when next in town.
