Island Shangri-La Hong Kong

Hong Kong, Asia and Far East

The hotel

The Island Shangri-La has captured the glamour and glitz of bygone Hong Kong perfectly. It comes filled with decadent extras and a subtle refined demeanour, which quietly prove it’s a little more special than your standard city pad. We’re talking colossal chandeliers, a multi-storey silk painting, complimentary luxuries for Horizon Club guests in its club lounge, a serene outdoor pool fringed by skyscrapers, and huge picture windows framing views of the harbour or Victoria Peak. Its eight dining choices range from Michelin starred feasts and an ward-wining grill to casual pastries but, linked to the Pacific Place mall, its location also puts you among the island’s finest dining venues, as well as premier shopping and cultural attractions.

Was told there's nowhere to sit, can you come back later ! And then two more gems. . You can wait in your room .. . and my personal fave 'you could work in the restaurant' . .(I'm not sure if he meant my own work or if he was offering me a job, but neither options really appealed as I had clearly checked in for a 2 night staycation to sit around the pool. .. As had half of HK evidently). It then transpires there was a waiting list for sitting around the pool and 25 rooms (rooms not individual people) were on the waiting list. .. Basically I was getting nowhere near the pool on a scorching hot 34c day . . So i went home. Shangri-La had totally oversold their staycation package, so much so that some families poolside did not even use their rooms and just went home when the pool closed, to return first thing Sunday morning and grab the loungers. . . If you're going to do a staycation deal, think about the consequences first, so many people were arguing with the pool staff. . I know it's a great hotel with great restaurants etc but for this trip it deserves a big fat 0/5 and any future staycation deals they send will be totally ignored. Read less

Wasted a weekend (and money) here, at what is supposed to be a well-respected institution of hospitality (and one of its flagship hotels) - also a well-renowned luxury hospitality brand that I've been fond of for decades. Fast forward: - Check in - long lines. Time wasted defending lack of upgrades. Impersonal. Crowded and noisy like an airport check in - Room - awful. Just one word would be enough to summarize it. The lights flickered, there is moss on the door frame, the wallpaper is peeling, the soundproofing was non-existent, the bathroom was tiny, the WC doesn't flush properly, the bath amenities were mini size, the towels and slippers were paper thin, the TV is lacking in function, there's no bluetooth speaker, the mattress felt noticeably worn, the linens are scratchy, there are no outlets on one side of the bed......even the envelope in the stationery kit was crumpled. The room felt like the set of a horror movie than a luxury hotel room. Also the view was quite bad, claustrophobically facing the Conrad hotel directly next door implying no privacy much at night (while our curtains failed to shut - more on that later). Our remark of a higher floor resulted in us ending up in the lower third of floors amongst the guest rooms, when we learnt about some other guests (with the same Golden Circle status and rate booked as us) ended up with upgrades onto the highest floor with a nice view. - Service. Non existent, perhaps except the phone operator who I'm sure was under a lot of stress and I could sympathize. At times no one picked up the phone. Front desk staff members discussed and joked loudly among themselves how they felt disgusted by guests ordering food delivery while they saw us waiting for the elevators right in front of them at the same time. Turndown service was at 10:30pm, seriously... The worst of the worst bits: - An isolated mention for the curtains, which refused to shut at night. It was 12:15am. They insisted on fixing it while we sat in our bed and watched the show. Didn't work, so just used brute force to shut them (and again to open them for which we had to call the next morning). Also, engineering staff should be accompanied by a front desk staff in these matters as is standard practice at other hotels. Not here. (it was extremely embarrassing and the incident was seemingly forgotten the next day by the staff - as this ate into 30 minutes of our time/sleep at the hotel, I do not think this was the proper or professional way to handle or rectify the situation in the context of luxury hospitality). - Breakfast. A 30+-minute wait for a table with a long line that spanned across the lift lobby outside the restaurant. Limited selection, overwhelming atmosphere. It's more like a wet market food centre than a luxury hotel restaurant. - The pool. I was the 15th ish (x2 people per party) on the first day, the 30th in line the second (and I put my name down early in the morning). Needless to say I failed to get a spot at the pool on either day. So I went on a staycation with my swimming trunks and brought them home untouched. It's just ridiculous. Especially when there's nothing to write home about from inside the room too. I ended up taking a stroll at Hong Kong Park - how ironic it is when your guests on staycation actually end up getting out of the hotel? And this is a big hotel with 560 keys. My weekend was totally ruined and my impressions of the Shangri-La brand (of which I've stayed at multiple of their portfolio hotels elsewhere) were tarnished by this stay. Half a star goes to the blazing fast wifi (although it did struggle at times), and another half star for the fitness centre which had a good range of equipment. That's it. Forget about the sale rates they are going for, you'll have to pay me to stay here again (and I'd still have to think about it.) I stayed at another well-established institution of similar room count/size nearby a few weeks ago. It was a heaven and hell experience with what I went through here. Read less

The staff of the Island Shangrila came to my rescue. They helped me to keep my baby occupied and speak to the driver. They helped me to fix my stroller and get it back into working order. More the specifically the Chief Concierge of the hotel Mary Ann Aboo took care of me and my baby and went over and beyond the call of duty to ensure everything was ok. I haven’t ever experienced such care and kindness before. Thank you to the Island Shangrila for hiring such a wonderful Member of staff who absolutely made my day. I recommend this hotel for families and those with little ones. Read less

From the moment of our arrival the Guest Relations Team (Nicole, Juna, Hailey, Rain, Irene, Nana, Daniela) could not do enough for us. Petrus was, as always, a most elegant of culinary affairs. The Spring (first of five courses) was like a frolic in a spring garden, with an inspired array of colourful fibrous vegetables. The weekend was so thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable that we have rebooked for the first weekend of August! Read less
