The Anvaya Beach Resorts

Kuta, Bali

The hotel

A heavenly hybrid of ‘traditional Bali’ and ‘chic global modernity’, The ANVAYA Beach Resort is a little piece of paradise. It doesn’t just blend Bali and beyond though, it also seamlessly blends seaside solitude with a spot right inside cooler-than-cool Kuta. It may have the resort’s parties on its doorstep but, once you’re inside its walls, you’re cossetted by luxuries like Sankati Spa, a series of mirror-like swimming pools, a sandy beach, Balinese high teas, and a unique children’s club, where little guests can try Indonesian cookery, bike rides, and even yoga. The design details are inspired by the island, from the majestic pavilion of Kunyit Restaurant (just one of its four dining or drinking venues), which also adds on-trend touches like al fresco seating pods, to the natural and neutral tones of its classy guest rooms, suites, and villas.

Stayed here for 3 nights in their lowest category Deluxe room in May-19. After reading so many 5 stars reviews on TA, I had high expectations. In my opinion, the resort scores well in terms of hospitality. Many employees I met from waiters at Kunyit to front desk were friendly. Breakfast at Kunyit had good variety with great emphasis on local Balinese food and good selection of coffee. So if you are looking for bacon and hashbrown for breakfast, this is not the place for you. Note that guests staying at their lowest category room gets breakfast only at Kunyit and not at Sands which is disappointing. Reason given is that Kunyit is closer to the Deluxe rooms than Sands but I actually do not mind walking to Sands for breakfast once in awhile. Will be good if Management states this clearly in their hotel website, otherwise it will come across as a form of discrimination. Now the not so good part which I hope management can take as room for improvement. 1st impression wasn’t too good for me during check-in. The receptionist requested for a security deposit of 1.5millon rupiah for the 3 nights I am staying which was totally fine with me and asked whether I will like to pay in cash or charge to my credit card. I replied that I will like to pay in cash. Next, she asked whether I will like to pay in dollars or rupiah. I replied in rupiah as I didn't have any US$ on me, took out my wallet and handed over the money. After which, she suddenly made a U-turn and said that I can now choose either to pay the security deposit as discussed or not pay the security deposit but settle whatever bill like mini bar charges during checkout instead. The sudden U-turn left me wondering why the initial request for a security deposit in the first place if it is not required? What is the hotel policy on security deposit? Perhaps I turned up at the resort in T-shirt and shorts and doesn’t look like I can afford to stay there until she saw the stack of cash in my wallet? I wonder. I had dinner at Kunyit on the 1st night as it was rated No.2 on TA. Staff at Kunyit were really friendly, especially the waiter Made. There was some Balinese performance at every hour. While the food presentation was good, the dish served was cold. I had their Nasi Campur and every single item on the plate from grilled prawn, chicken, fish, soup, satay, rice, veg were cold. The grilled fish was also stale as it was mushy. Didn't finish my dinner. Had the impression that the food items were prepared several hours ago and true enough the next morning I saw the same dishes like satay, chicken and fish being served at breakfast. Left me wondering if I was being served leftovers during dinner. Decided to head over to neighbouring hotel Febri’s across the road for dinner the next day which has a live band. Breakfast at Kunyit could do with a little more signages whether smoking is allowed or not allowed. Saw some guests sitting out in the open smoking with cigarette smell drifting into the restaurant. Had to look for a table far away from the smokers. The noodle station could do with a little more instruction because I saw a Caucasian taking some raw yellow noodles on his plate of cooked food. I had to tell him that the noodles are raw and needs to be cooked at the station. There were also issues of mosquitoes at the restaurant, but I guess it can’t be avoided in such a resort setting. The Deluxe Room I had was on their highest 5th floor. Physically, it was actually the 4th floor but the resort named it as 5th floor (likely to avoid the number 4 which sounds like death in Chinese) while my room number starts with a “6”, so it can be quite confusing for new guests. Overall, room was good with a wide TV selection though the design of having a closet and a luggage platform in the toilet was weird and a first for me. The mattress may need replacement soon as it sinks in the middle probably from heavy usage. There were also some loose tap fittings in the toilet and main door alignment issues. Will be good if the resort can also provide at least 2 bottles each of shampoo, shower gel and conditioner per day as 1 bottle is often not enough for 2pax. On my last night, I had issue of cigarette smell drifting into my room from the balcony (likely from neighouring room) despite having the sliding door closed. Was surprised as I requested for non-smoking room during check-in with the receptionist acknowledging the request. It was also noisy as some guests decided to have a pool party past midnight despite the pool being closed after 9pm. Pool opening hours were unfortunately not enforced in this resort. Overall, my stay was above average despite some issues encountered. I didn't feel the "wow" factor that some reviewers had described about the resort. Will probably try out some other hotels and resorts the next time I visit Bali. Read less

I asked for crab soup (balinese style) on barbeque night and it tasted delicious. The room was clean but only has standing shower for deluxe room type. I expected for bathtub. Overall, it was a good end of a holiday trip and I will definitely stay here on my next trip to Bali. Read less

We stayed for 2 nights after 10 days at the Hyatt Regency in Sunur and we have to say we that we where more than surprised to find another resort that had the same high standards as the Hyatt. From the easy check in and given a room to use as our lagoon pool room was not ready, there is a lounge with complimentary beverages and great snacks until your room is ready. We dined in the Sands restaurant on the first night and from the service and the food it was faultless. The breakfast is amazing with so many dishes to choose from, you will not be disappointed. The staff are excellent, always smiling and very polite and attentive. Thank you so much to Ayin who assisted us we check in. We are looking forward to returning in September and will be staying longer the next time. Put this Hotel on the top of your list. Read less
