Lovely, helpful staff; particularly Elizabeth on the activities counter who was so enthusiastic, and Arween on the Concierge desk who helped my partner with his scooter rental, going beyond the call of his duties! Thank you also to the two ladies cooking eggs at breakfast, who made me feel so welcome and excited about my new engagement! The grounds are beautifully kept, as are the rooms. Gorgeous pools, and great to have easy access to water sports. The only suggestion I have would be that the buffet dishes should be labelled with (v) if vegetarian, as it is often difficult to know which items contain meat/fish. Thank you for such a memorable trip - we highly recommend a visit here! Read less

The facilities were as you would expect from a Shangri-La hotel, but the staff were absolutely outstanding. Without exception they were friendly, helpful and incredibly polite, nothing was too much trouble. Huge congratulations to whoever does the staff training it really shows. Food prices were a bit of a shock after the rest of Borneo, but less then 5 star hotels in the UK. My only tiny gripe was that the warnings about the sandflies could have been more visible, as we failed to take precautions on our first day and paid the price. Our experience would certainly make me chose another hotel in chain once I have saved up again! Read less

We visited the hotel with our two kids - 5&7. We stayed in the ocean wing, and from the cold towels when we arrived to the goodbye song when we left, it was fantastic! The rooms in the Ocean Wing are great - big beds and huge bathrooms. Best thing though is a giant bath on the balcony - the kids loved using this every night! The pool at the Ocean Wing was good - big and clean and quiet/relaxing. Our kids preferred the pool at the garden wing - much more buzzy and the water slide was brilliant. We have to give a special mention to Tracy who was the water slide attendant. She was brilliant, chatted away to the kids, kept them safe on the slide and was generally a fantastic and lovely person! The restaurants were good - we loved the teppenyaki the most. We were lucky enough to have Chef Ben twice - he was brilliant - a massively talented chef and answered all our son’s questions while cooking! The food here was absolutely amazing - kids and adults favourite. Naan the Indian restaurant was very very good too - kids loved the children’s curry (like a tikka masala) and we loved the adults food - good selection of set menus and standalone dishes. Quick note - in the hotel book it says Naan is collars and proper shoes for men. We thought this meant to would be too formal for the kids. We were wrong! There is no real dress code, everyone was fairly causal . Oceano was lovely, if a little expensive. Great pizza and the crab pasta was excellent. We had lunch most days by the pool and the restaurant there was great - mix of Malay and Western food. Kids loved the. Nasi Gorang (chicken friend rice) and the burgers. They also have a candy floss stall and an once cream hut that does ice cream burgers and a 8 scoop wonder called the mount Kinabalu! Obviously kids loved this!! This was at the end of our Bornean adventure so we didn’t do any long trips - the snorkelling to the islands was great if a little crowded (although perfectly suitable for the kids) and the morning ‘breakfast with a view’ trip was definitely worth the 4am start! The hotel held a fete/craft fair when we were there with local crafts people selling their wares. We LOVED this - the kids enjoyed buying a bracelet and I loved it for buying gifts for people back home, and helping out the local economy. They also had games (coconut bowling and blowpipe games) which we all enjoyed. Culminated in an extraordinary fire dance which was brilliant! Couple of things to note that are in no way negative, just things i’d like to have known - sand flys - there are lots of them! Get some spray (hotel has some too) and wear it every day! Even during the day! - at the restaurant by the pool, it’s street food style - different little booths selling different stuff (noodle bar, grill, curry house etc) so if your family orders a range of stuff they will come out when they are ready - not necessarily all at the same time! Kids also made their own tie dye T-shirt’s at the kids club and we all got excellent henna tattoos which everyone loved! All in all, I would highly recommend staying here - the staff are faultless - just so friendly and helpful, the hotel is beautiful (sunset on the beach are stunning), and it was the perfect end to our holiday! We visited this hotel in June 2019 for 14 nights. Booked and stayed in the Ocean Wing on a half board basis. Room spacious and very clean and the inclusive mini bar was a nice touch. Enormous balcony with plenty of seating and uninterrupted views across the beach. Our half board basis entitled us to use the buffet restaurant for breakfast and dinner, however if we wished to use the al a carte restaurants for dinner we had an credit of 100 ringgit's per person towards the cost of the meal per visit. We only used the al a carte restaurants twice as we found the buffet restaurants had a good choice. There was plenty of sunbeds around the ocean wing pool and the frozen fruit in the afternoon was a nice touch. We also had ice cream delivered by bike whilst around the pool area which was lovely if not a little pricey. As part of staying in the ocean wing we received sunset drinks for one hour as part of the package. This was from 5.00 - 6.00pm. After a couple of days the staff got to know us and remembered our drinks, which was a nice touch. All of the staff from the grounds people to the managers were truly friendly, helpful and extremely efficient, sorting any enquiries out which we made. We visited the Orangutans at Sepilok. This was a wonderful day out if not very long. We booked the flights ourselves before leaving the UK and the tour itself was booked through Borneo Trails who have an office onsite in the hotel. This was well organised and due to our very early start the hotel provided us with a pack up breakfast. The tour included the Orangutans, Sun bears and also a city tour which also included lunch. All in all a fantastic holiday and would recommend it and hopefully will visit again in the future. Read less
