Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa

Penang, Malaysia

The hotel

Rasa Sayang takes its name from an old Malay folk song that means ‘a feeling of love’ – exactly what you’ll experience when you arrive here! A beautiful resort, it also enjoys a luxurious setting in 30-acres of lush gardens, framed by majestic ancient rain trees. Some of the world’s most recognisable names have holidayed here, including celebrity author Barbara Cartland and the former King of Cambodia. A definite attraction is CHI, The Spa, the largest and most luxuriously appointed in Penang. There’s also award-winning cuisine served at the Ferringi Grill, which boasts a wine cellar and cigar menu, or indulge in buffet delights at the Spice Market Café.

Stayed 10 nights in the Rasa wing as we wanted access to the adults only pool, afternoon tea and evening drinks and canapés. Well worth the upgrade. Bipul at the pool looked after us and brought our favourite drinks over unasked. Fernandez looked after us when we had to change rooms due to no hot water in our room. Inconvenient however staff did their best to fix it and when they couldn’t, assisted with room transfer and a free meal in Spice Garden Cafe. Very much appreciated. The breakfast was very good, afternoon teas were great and evening canapés often enough for us to forego dinner. Handy free shuttle to George Town several times a day. A very relaxing stay with lovely staff. The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. Thank you! Read less

We stayed at the Rasa Sayang early September 2019 for five nights. On first appearance very little had changed. The hotel has been very much the same for many years and is maybe in need of some change. On checking in we were informed at reception that standards of dress for the Rasa lounge had been dropped as they were taking on the mode of resort hotel. The first time we went it was very much a six star hotel and visitors dressed to go for high tea or cocktails. The standard of food offered had also reduced. On our first visit we were offered tasters set on a white China plate and brought to you served alongside drinks of your choice. On a later visit this changed to a hot buffet style you had to help yourself to. This time we were offered bitesize quiche which was generally cold, sausage rolls, chicken wings or Malay style taster with the same type of cheese and biscuits and fruit on every night. The Rasa Sayang is an expensive place to stay but the food did not live up to standards of a good hotel. The breakfast was also poor and the tea awful. The Rasa pool was lovely as usual and the staff (particularly Muru) very attentive. The room was good and very comfortable. Again on our first visit we were inundated by managers falling over themselves to come and speak to you. This made you feel special. This time we did not see one. Overall a disappointing stay. We feel that the standards have dropped and we are unlikely to return. Read less

Once again you have left us speechless and more in love with the Rasa Sayang!! we have just come back last week from a 9 night stay 29aug-07 Sept. i travelled with my husband and two young children. We stayed in the garden wing executive family room which are two interconnecting rooms - perfect for families and for those who require some extra space. This is i think our 7th time back at Rasa Sayang within a 11 year period and from the first time till our last time last week the service we receive and our experience keeps on getting better and better. We arrived late and as soon as the check in staff saw our children where very tired they were efficient, accommodating and welcoming getting us to our room as soon as they could. Housekeeping for our whole stay we were lucky enough to have Nobel who kept our rooms immaculate, always so friendly and smiling and was so lovely to our kids leaving chocolates and milk for them - wow - management he is an asset to your hotel, another asset to your hotel is 'Zak' (Zakarin) at the Spice Market. We remember him from our past visits and he provides exceptional customer service always making sure we were comfortable and that our kids were ok and watching him he did this with everyone not just with us - we enjoyed our breakfast chats with him. Overall all staff at the SMC were exceptional. Same with the pool boys who some mornings knew our daily routine and where we would like to sit near the kids pool had our towels already set up for us - im sorry i didnt get their names but again 10/10 service. Thank you once again for a memorable stay. I highly recommend this hotel and i challenge anyone to find a better hotel with better service in south east asia. As you can imagine - we will be back again. Read less

This was our family holiday hotel growing up and decided to bring my niece here for a long weekend. To come back after 30 odd years was filled with nostalgia. Thankfully, Christoph and his amazing team (namely Ina & Ruby at Reception, Catherine & Fatimah at Ferringhi Grill, Muru at the Rasa Wing pool, Harun from recreation, and Shamsul from housekeeping) made our stay a most special and memorable one. They welcome us like family and nothing was too hard. Being a Diamond Member, we were upgraded to a suite upon arrival. They knew it was my niece's 13th birthday and already had a birthday cake waiting for her as we entered the suite. My niece loved riding on the golf buggy to the Golden Sands Hotel and the concierge team spoilt her by indulging her. The Ferringhi Grill knew I like papayas, and every morning they will bring me a plate of sweet fresh papaya. Muru has the biggest smile and made sure everyone at the Rasa Wing pool had everything they needed. I could go on and on. We stayed at the Rasa Wing and it was worth every cent. I look forward to bringing my husband there next year. Thank you again Christoph and team. Read less

We visited Penang for the first time (group of 3 couples). We booked in advance via the hotel’s website after reviewing previous reviews although it turns out we could have booked it cheaper closer to the time - disappointing. We had 3 adjoining rooms in the Rasa Wing - lovely ground floor rooms that opened out to a leafy courtyard area rather than the higher rooms that simply had a small balcony - highly recommend. Also recommend the Rasa wing for the additional comfort of a child free pool area and access to the Rasa lounge. In the lounge you can enjoy afternoon tea - the quality of the food varies, some days the scones were not as fresh as they could have been, however it also comes with several cakes and 3 types of sandwiches (different each day). This is served from 3-4pm each day with tea, coffeee, cold drinks. From 5.30pm-7pm free flowing beer and wine (reasonable selection) with canapés (usually a selection of 3 hot canapés- reasonable although could have been better - sometimes cooked too early and not quite hot enough for my liking). Breakfast was either semi a la carte in the restaurant upstairs or you could have the full buffet in the main garden wing - with children and a lot noisier. There were night markets easily accessible from the hotel - just out the front and to the right, and they go on for quite a way - the usual. Although I wouldn’t rate it as one of the best resort experiences that I have had, I was happy with our stay and the staff were excellent. Read less
