AETAS Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand

The hotel

A city centre sanctuary in bustling Bangkok, this is one of the newest hotels in the AETAS family – giving you the benefits of modern décor and facilities to match. Just a 5-minute walk from the Phloen Chit BTS station, the Skytrain takes you to hotspots like Silom Road, with its shops, restaurants and entertainment. But you’re also opposite All Seasons Place retail centre, with 150 upscale boutiques, supermarkets, restaurants and other retailers. Perfect for a spot of early morning T'ai chi, rowing or walking, you’re also only 10-minute walk from Lumpini Park. You may be bang in Bangkok’s centre, but the AETAS’s 6th floor lets you forget: near the spa and fitness centre are the outdoor pool and whirlpool, where you can enjoy a gentle breeze, the scent of frangipane trees and the services of the aptly named Time Out pool bar.

Sadly some of the the people in this hotel are EXTREMELY dishonest. Be very very careful with your receipts, room charges, signatures, everything. The whole catastrophe started when my friend and I called to request a very simple room service order (two gin & tonics, literally nothing else). The drinks simply never arrived, even though we called the room service line twice to ask what was going on. Eventually, after about 30-40 mins, we became mildly irritated & decided to go down to the hotel lobby bar to check what was going on. Nobody knew anything about it. We were surprised, but we thought, “ok, obviously some sort of miscommunication, mistakes do happen” & we made the exact same order at the bar itself. We paid for these (expensive) drinks in cash at the bar & prepared to take them up to the room. Just at that point, an EXTREMELY long time after had we first made the call, the very first room service order (of TWO DRINKS) was obviously rushed through & finally appeared - but not at the room - at the hotel reception! So - after a crazy delay, us having to order our drinks ourselves at the bar, an appalling & confusing explanation, we were handed a second round of drinks IN THE HOTEL LOBBY (nice “room service” there guys!) I was a bit upset and there was a (fairly long) conversation during which I informed the reception staff I did not want to pay for this second tray of “room service” that we didn’t order & that had never even made it to the room. They agreed, handed over the tray, did not request that I sign the check, & we left. We took the drinks to the room & all seemed to be ok, we were happy enough given these apparently compensatory drinks (although 50 mins is still a frustrating wait time for any number of simple drinks, even if the second round is on the house!). Also my friend had to leave after another half an hour, so our entire meet-up was sort of ruined. Upon check-out, I was dismayed to be literally forced to pay for the second round of drinks, i.e. to pay for both rounds, even though neither were brought it to the room - and we had only ordered one round of drinks anyway! It was genuinely what I believe is known as “daylight robbery”. The hotel even showed me the (very clearly unsigned!) receipt for the drinks - as everyone who stays in hotels knows, a blank, unsigned receipt literally means “this charge will not be added to your bill”. I questioned this charge of 1,035 baht (plus some random 40 baht for some “potato chips” from the minibar which I simply did not have, & don’t even eat anyway - frankly that was the final straw), Prachya C became unspeakably rude & horrible. He started talking in front of me in really fast Thai, refused to translate or even look at me, then finally said (in very aggressive English) that he was going to call the police. I knew I was 100% in the right here, so I agreed. Sure enough, the police arrived. They were extremely sympathetic to me, but, because Prachya was refusing to admit that the charge was unfair (wounded pride, perhaps an attempt to save face in front of his staff?) they said that we would all need to go along to the local police station to sort the issue out. All for the sake of 1,075 baht. Classy. At this point I was close to tears, because Prachya was still refusing to either give me any of the receipts, speak to me normally, or even treat me like a human being. So I just gave in & slightly tearfully paid it all. Prachya wouldn’t even tell me his full last name, which seems a bit sketchy for a hotel duty manager. Maybe he was worried I would write a bad review mentioning him?). The combination of terrible lateness, poor customer service, sheer dishonesty & complete greed was disgusting to me. I really dislike avarice & although I don’t mind a small amount of being ripped off (what western tourist doesn’t expect a bit of that on occasion, right?!) this was just a completely horrible experience. Please, please stay away from this place for your own sanity. Read less

The hotel offers a complimentary tuk tuk from the hotel to the BTS station (it’s about a 5 to 10 minute walk). I had a upgrade to a suite when I arrived and I have to say it was excellent, very spacious and comfortable. You are provided with two complimentary bottles of water and there is also a mini bar. I also used the fitness centre, while it isn’t too big it does have some good equipment there. In addition to the BTS been close there are also a lot of good restaurants within a short walk of the hotel. Read less
