The Riverie by Katathani Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai, Thailand

The hotel

Framed by the flowing waters of Kok River, The Riverie by Katathani is a unique hotel in a unique island setting. Its slick modern architecture is softened by authentic details in keeping with its location – like ornate fretwork, elegant arches, and structures reminiscent of Far Eastern pagodas and temples. The rooms also mix contemporary comforts with cultural touches, with Lanna-like lamps and lotus flower-inspired bedhead artwork. Its island setting doesn’t cut The Riverie off from the rest of Chiang Rai, with shopping, dining and attractions all nearby – although it also has five bars and restaurants of its own, including the Jujube Bar at its fabulous riverside pool.

This rather luxury hotel is beautifully decorated and impeccibly clean. Since we were 2 staying there at the time, each morning on the room overlooking the river. The staff very helpful and gracious. It is located a short drive from town. We would love to stay there in the future.

The location is beautiful but ultimately this building is a monstrosity which should have never been built, a real scar on the otherwise magnificent landscape - a great white concrete carbuncle. Most of the rooms are air-conditioned cells - although spacious they have no windows that can be opened so you definitely feel trapped (the rooms with small balconies are more expensive). The hotel is quite isolated - a good 20-30 minute walk from the centre, and there isn't much around it so walking into town is not a very attractive prospect. A hotel shuttle service is offered in the evening, but using a tuk-tuk is definitely cheaper and really the only solution during the day. The hotel 'shops' are ridiculously expensive, indeed most of the prices (food and drink) are crazy by Thai standards and high even by European. On the plus side, the buffet breakfast is very good, and the staff were unfailingly polite and helpful. Nonetheless I would not stay here again, I would advise visitors to Chiang Rai to stay somewhere more central, smaller, and rather less pretentious. Read less

Staff very friendly but a good 20 minute walk into town. Shuttle bus provided but the fee was more expensive than ordering a tuk tuk As the hotel was so empty it lacked any type of atmosphere and the poolside was very quiet Would only visit Chang rai if you really need to see the white temple or the big Buddha as there is little else there Read less

In a beautiful setting next to the Kok river the Riverie is situated across from the Myanmar border. This is a five star hotel resirt with breath taking views on the 10 floor where the Peak is located. We watched the sunset while sipping on happy hour cocktails. The breakfast buffet is the best we have experienced so far while touring around Thailand. Taxi to the White Temple is quite affordable or hire a driver for the day. The grounds are immaculately landscaped with all varieties of floral. We would definitely stay here again. Read less
