We were all inclusive and there was a good choice of food, both local and "western" plus for dinner you could choose between buffet or a la carte. There were slight restrictions on the drinks menu but we always found something we like (and a good excuse to drink cocktails!). The rooms were spacious and clean. The beach was on you doorstep and you had 3 pools to choose from, we felt spoilt (we may have been lucky as it wasn't to capacity but I still think they'd been enough space if it was). Pool III could do with a little TLC but on some occasions we were the only ones there, so our own private pool! Free shuttle buses to the town and night markets although I don't know why anyone would want to leave........ Read less

Eg, shower gel dispensers need to be added a one tiny bottle between two people doesn’t go far and on the odd occasion the room had not been attended to when we returned to get ready for the evening. But I would most definitely stay here again. The private beach dinner option was a great night for a special occasion, we loved that. Thank you Merlin. Read less

Background: The Bangsak Merlin Resort is a high-quality hotel, located in a relatively private location and occupying one of the best beaches in the Phang Nga region. The hotel offers a range of services including; gym, spa, coffee shop, air conditioned lounge, bar, (chargeable) mini-bar service, air conditioned rooms, laundry service, two restaurants and three swimming pool areas. Review: Having recently returned (January 2019) from the Bangsak Merlin Resort, I would rate this hotel as well above average for hotels in the region. The room was clean and spacious and included a large balcony, full automatic air conditioning/climate control, large bath and separate shower, large wardrobe (although only six hangers were provided), electronic safe, LCD TV, integrated sofa setting area and a very comfortable super king bed. The room was really comfortable and cleaned to a high standard throughout my stay. I stayed at the hotel on an all-inclusive board basis and found the food in both restaurants exceptional, although would rate the ‘Nest’ restaurant as slightly better quality than the ‘At Sea’ restaurant, however, the near beach front setting of the ‘At Sea’ restaurant is spectacular. Both restaurants offer a choice of Thai or Western cuisine with the ‘Nest’ restaurant offering a buffet service in the evening. The best thing about the restaurants is that you can order from an a la carte menu at both lunch and dinner, and the Thai cuisine in particular was outstanding. The hotel doesn’t offer a reservation system for their restaurants, however, will take reservations for a particular table and/or time if required. The ability to offer from a menu and without the need for booking in advance was a welcome change from all-inclusive hotels in the Caribbean for example, and sets this hotel apart. This added to the informal and relaxing atmosphere at the hotel. The drink offering at the hotel is good but expect to pay for premium brands. The three hotel pool areas were clean and set amidst trees and vegetation, offering smaller secluded areas and a sense of relaxation. Sunbeds were plentiful and although some guests felt the need to reserve early in the morning, this wasn’t necessary and as always spoilt the otherwise relaxed ambience of the resort. The largest of the pool areas contained a swim-up bar open from 11:00-18:00 and although the pool areas were large as they weren’t particularly deep this allowed them to remain warm throughout the day. The beach was well positioned and although elevated from the main beach this provided some protection from the tide. The beach is a mixture of sand and shell/dead coral and I would recommend either purchasing a pair of water shoes (available either from the hotel shop for around 650 THB per pair or from the Bang Niang Market where you can expect to pay around 500 THB for two pairs), or walking along the beach where the sand opens out and there is less beach debris. There are relatively strong under-currents in the sea, therefore swimming within the hotel areas is recommended. The beach contains a range of small independent bars, a small shop selling water, beer etc. and some beach massage tents. The best of the massage tents is ‘Happy Massage’ where you can expect to pay between 450-500 THB per massage. Locals working on the beach are courteous, friendly and do not hassle you, unlike other places in the World. The staff at the hotel are arguably the hotels best asset, and everyone from the hotel manager to the gardening staff stay hello and are genuinely friendly. There isn’t a culture of tipping for service, and this is certainly not expected by anyone at the hotel. I tended to offer some small tips throughout my stay to recognise excellent service, however, you could equally not tip and would receive the same level of service. This again, made the whole experience relaxing and added to the overall atmosphere of the hotel. Overall, I would rate this hotel as a really strong 4.5* hotel if comparing to international standards, although it would probably rate as 5* locally. The hotel is relatively small c.270 rooms and is set in a peaceful location approximately 20 minutes from Bang Niang and 25 minutes from Khao Lak (the hotel offers a free shuttle bus throughout the afternoon/early evening, and a private taxi will set you back around 900-1000 THB). The hotel is peaceful and relaxed (gentleman can wear smart shorts to dinner for example) and the staff offer an outstanding level of service. The food quality is exceptionally high and the ability to order from an a la carte menu and without making a restaurant reservation really adds to the ambience of the resort. The hotel offers some low-key entertainment a few nights a week (traditional Thai music and dancing, and a fire show), and two different singers in the lobby bar. This certainly isn’t a hotel for guests looking for large-scale Americanised entertainment. Tips: 1) Although the hotel offers a full laundry service this is relatively expensive but I would recommend this service for dresses, shirts, trousers etc. For underwear, swimming/beach clothes etc. there is a small laundrette outside of the hotel offering a full laundry service for 80 THB per kilo. Don’t expect clothes back on hangers when using this service, however, clothes are clean, ironed and flat-packed; 2) Order Thai cuisine from the a la carte menu. The staff are more than happy to recommend dishes and you can order as many or few as you like; 3) If you stay on an all-inclusive board basis you are asked to sign a receipt after every drink or meal purchase. This is perfectly normal practice at the hotel and the receipt clearly states ‘ALL INCLUSIVE’ at the top so there is no actual charge; 4) I booked two trips; James Bond Island boat tour and an Eco tour, both with Tui. The Eco Tour was amazing and of the two trips, this was far better value and an unforgettable experience; 5) The hotel has a small outside coffee shop and both the coffee and cakes are amazing. This is included as part of the all-inclusive board basis; 6) As the mini-bar (including water) is chargeable, ask for a couple of bottles of water from the beach bar during the day and place in the mini-bar; 7) Iron and ironing boards are available on request only, so it is advised to ask early in your stay. Improvements: 1) The hotel should provide an iron and ironing board in the room as standard; 2) Consider a piano in the lobby bar to add some evening ambience!; 3) The hotel has a Tsunami evacuation point, and although it is highly unlikely that this will be needed, the hotel or tour operators should make guests aware of the location and the evacuation procedure. This is more a point for Tui who should spend time making guests aware of this rather than up-selling trips! 4) Beach towels are changed between 16:00-21:00 in the room, although this was hit and miss. It would be better to offer a drop-off and collection service for fresh towels perhaps at the beach and pool areas. Read less

My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks and have just returned. We both loved it here, the hotel, staff and food were all first class for us and it was up there with 5 star hotels I have stayed in. The Hotel was modern and spotlessly clean with 2 restaurants and three bars. The rooms are large with a huge bed and a lovely bathroom with a large shower room. We had plenty of room to put our stuff but then we don't take huge amounts of clothing etc like some people appear to. The restaurants were both good,it was pleasing to find that the all inclusive deal meant that we could eat anytime in both, either buffet or off the menu morning, midday or evening in the main restaurant or off the menu midday or evening in the sea view restaurant. The staff and the food were excellent and we could not fault the variety or the quality. The staff throughout the hotel are all very friendly and polite with a good sense of fun which seems to sum up the Thai people in general bless them. We did the elephant sanctuary day trip which also involves a raft trip and dropping in at other interesting places and it was a lovely day out, the elephants were amazing and you get right up close and friendly with them, everybody we spoke to loved this trip as much as us. The beach is rather lovely and the bay is very shallow and safe, whilst we are there the sea was like a mill pond most of the time and so warm, I spent a lot of time in there. No idea why somebody said in their review it was unsafe at no time was that our experience. Weather wise it was very warm and fairly humid at all times. It does rain at times but usually late afternoon to evening so you still get a morning of sunshine. In two weeks it did this four times so we couldn't complain and if it didn't do that it wouldn't be such a green and lovely place. The slight downside to this, Mosquitoes, so take a decent insecticide if you find they like to bite you as they do me, I was bitten quite a bit particularly in the first week. In summary if you are happy with a quieter place to stay this hotel is ideal. When we arrived we seemed to be in with the people who had stayed for Christmas/ New Year so there were quite a few people about but by the first Wednesday this had dwindled right down and remained that way until we left. If you like a more hustle bustle atmosphere then you would be better off down at Phuket. Read less
