Great hotel in a great environment. The beach together with the reef is fabulous, the staff are also great and will make everything they can to look after you. Despite being in an incredible location and having an amazing staff, they ruin the entire experience due to things as the events that they hold every other day and in which they reserve the entire garden and sometimes beach area not allowing the hotel guests to enjoy certain areas of the hotel or keeping the guests awake until late at night because of the loud music of the event. During our 6 night stay, 4 were with some kind of private events going on. When we asked to the management no answers were given. During our last night, one big event was going on and the security guards will even prohibit the hotel guests to walk free from one point to another of the garden area. Sad thing when you pay the best room facing the sea in a 5 star hotel and you cannot enjoy the calm you were looking for because of this. I was even forced to leave my sun bed at the beach because the organization needed to clear the area for the mentioned event. The hotel has 10 dining venues, great ones to be honest. However don’t expect fresh juice for breakfast because you won’t find it. The hotel has also a great diving center inside run by Daniel, who is a fantastic person, always willing to help and improve your stay. Read less

Pros 1. Very warm greeting from Natty upon arrival with welcome drinks, Chang beer, cold towels and a few complimentary deals. 2. Lovely beach, beautiful setting, very quiet. There are no private beaches in Thailand but this beach is a good example of one where you can only gain access through the hotel. 3. Nice room and fantastic cleaning service from Jit, lovely and friendly. 4. Buffet breakfast was excellent, lots of variety. 5. Staff are all excellent and extremely friendly. Cons 1. OVERPRICED - food and drink prices are extortionate for Thailand. On top of that, you pay +10% service charge and +7% tax. Wouldn't mind if you were getting good value for money but the food was average. We went across the road to Ta Khai restaurant (managed by Rosewood group) - the prices here were similar to the Marriott but the food was excellent and well worth it. 2. Beach is nice, but you cannot swim very easily, too many rocks. Will cost you 300baht to rent snorkel gear for a day. 3. General atmosphere isn't quite what we expected: i. No restaurants near the beach, they are all grouped around near the lobby. ii. Went to Thai buffet on first night (1000baht per person + +), very busy, lots of screaming children, terrible lighting. Food was ok (we've had better in Thailand) but atmosphere terrible. iii. Quite a few "lads" holidays around which was particularly uncomfortable. Not really geared for couples, although appreciate the Marriott do not market this for couples. Still, as a family, I do not think I would bring my kids to this hotel. iv. Hotel needs a dress code for the restaurants. Watching a topless man eat at the beach grill does not feel like a 5 star experience. Tips 1. Do not eat lunch or dinner at the hotel. If you come out the hotel onto the road and turn left, there are several restaurants up there that are all excellent, serving authentic Thai cuisine at cheap Thai prices. Sealay, le tong, rabiang, coconut heaven to name a few. J&Js is also a fantastic bar for drinks that are literally half the price of the hotel. 2. We crossed off service charge on a few of our bills. Don't get me wrong, we left it on if we received good service, but if the guy at the rum shack is handing me a can of coke, should I really be paying 10% service? We were still charged even though we crossed off service charge, but we soon had a 10% discount applied to our account which we can only assume was to make up for the service charge. 3. Get up early to reserve beds by the beach. We came down once at 7.30am before our yoga class and all the beach beds had towels on. We had yoga, went to breakfast, came back at 10am and still, all the beach beds had towels on and no one on them. After we complained I did see staff being a bit more vigilant with removing towels (thank you!). 4. All the restaurants outside hotel to the left offer you mosquito repellent when you dine there so no need to put it on before you go out. Why does the hotel not offer this at their restaurants? 5. Bring snorkelling gear. 6. Go for a Thai massage on the beach - 300 baht vs 1000 baht in hotel. 7. Upgrade to a swim up pool access room when you arrive - much cheaper than booking before you go. 8. There is a small shop outside hotel if you turn right. Stock up on Chang beer here. 40 baht from the shop vs 150baht (+10%+7% = 175baht) in the hotel. Over 4 times more expensive for local Thai beer at the hotel - are you joking! 9. Patong is gross. Marriott - you should try and buy the Little Tiger restaurant on the hill of the beach and turn this into an exclusive beach restaurant. I know you advertise 7 restaurants but for dinner it is really just the Merchant restaurant, Thai restaurant, Italian restaurant (all next to each other) and the Beach grill. Fine for a few days but not if you are staying longer than a week really. Again, food is fine, but overpriced and not 5 star. Overall, good friendly hotel but there are nicer 5 star hotels out there.
