We stayed at The Slate, for 3 nights, wanting a hotel near the airport for the first part of the trip, but still a luxury experience. The transfer from the airport was about ten minutes. It was a smooth and comfortable journey, organised by the hotel. Check in was quick and efficient, the staff were friendly and accommodating. One of my biggest annoyances is a long check in! We ate at Black Ginger on the first night, it’s a very atmospheric restaurant, the entrance is an experience in itself. The food and service were very good. Our room (3117) is a pool villa, large, open with comfortable bed, plenty of storage and a big bathroom. The outside area was nice, with a large outdoor bathtub and the private swimming pool. The design/decor of The Slate is modern/industrial. It was designed to reflect the owners mining heritage and they have certainly committed to the aesthetic. It’s not especially to my taste, but that’s a personal preference. The resort is huge, it’s a big, sprawling area, with numerous pools, pathways and lawns, a gym and a tennis court. Our only issue was the quality of breakfast. The omelettes we had on day one were not very pleasant. The pork sausages were also pretty unpleasant, I cut into one and there was a huge piece of gristle, running through it. I like crispy bacon, but this stuff was literally inedible. Dinner in the same restaurant as breakfast was actually pretty good, a nice varied menu and pretty tasty food. I think that shows the breakfast team need to up their game massively. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. I don’t know that we’d rush back, but for what we wanted it was a good choice. Read less

We have been coming to this area for over 20 years. Stayed here before in its various guises. Standout is the staff. They seem to come here as trainees and stay through to retirement. Su who runs the tinmine at breakfast has been here 25 years. She is like a mother hen to her staff, leading by example. The lead breakfast chef, sorry didn’t get his name, ensures everyone has what they need. He knew I liked mango, so when not on the buffet, he ensured one was prepared for me. I was very touched. It is the best breakfast of any hotel, fresh, huge variety, quality ingredients. All served with a smile. You all deserve a medal! We spent our days by the large pool, it wasn’t too busy. Again the staff are gems. In charge is Coco, always a wave and some friendly words. Fame was there every day, ensuring everyone had plenty of fresh water, lollies etc. Such maturity and wisdom in one so young. We had a top floor room with two balconies and looking over pool 1, a great spot! The mature gardens are superb, and the landscaping very clever. Just very calming. Hats off to the Gardener’s and pool cleaning team, who keep everything ship shape. I am really not sure about the industrial theme. In some areas this looks more like neglect, does it need a refurb, or has it been deliberately made to look like it??? I did have a niggle. We were given complementary drinks vouchers, which we used towards the end of our stay. But we shouldn’t have bothered. They can only be used on a special limited cocktail menu or a beer? The one I had was awful! This is supposedly a 5* hotel? Nobody needs a free drink. So if you give one for goodness sake give a proper drink. That really made me cross! The beach is outside the back gate, always a salute from the gate keeper. It is jellyfish time and quite windy so only walked on the beach. There are so many restaurants now, and even hawker food stalls. We always eat at our friends since our first time, excellent food. We buy from the minimart and generally support the locals. It was very quiet this time, we have never been in September before. Thanks to everyone we encountered who contributed to our total relaxation. We will be back!! Read less

A must in Phuket the restaurant is surrounded by water and you are taken to the restaurant by a small floating raft, you can either eat inside or out and it is an amazing location. It is close to the airport and located close to the beach
