Caravelle Hotel

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The hotel

Part of the fabric of Ho Chi Minh City, Caravelle Saigon oozes history. Its District 1 setting, by Lam Son Square and Dong Khoi Street, could make you think it’s all about location, but the iconic Caravelle comes stocked with many other treats. Its pool’s the ultimate urban hangout, with daybeds, a sunken seating area, and a bar at its edge. Its spa and several of its elegant rooms have Lam Son Square views. And its eight dining and drinking venues include legendary bars like Martini Bar, home of CBS News Bureau in the 60s, and a rooftop bar which was the city’s highest point that decade, and a popular haunt of journalists. Since then, a Champagne Corner has been added downstairs, serving bubbles paired with oysters, caviar and truffles.

This had been on my bucket list for a long time due to its history with the Press Corps during the war and the view over Saigon. But dreams are not reality. I went up at 5pm and the seats against the wall (about 12-15 in number) were all empty. Seated, I was informed they were reserved and to move closer to the parapet, where it was hot, HOt, HOT.… Read more

I went up at 5pm and the seats against the wall (about 12-15 in number) were all empty. Seated, I was informed they were reserved and to move closer to the parapet, where it was hot, HOt, HOT. So got up and walked out. First impressions are so important, especially for 5 star hotels. Will try the Continental tomorrow and see if that is a good watering hole for the next two weeks. Read less

Stopped by during happy hour as I ws told it was pricey. Not really. Nice music by a 1 person guitar player. Nice to look at the iconic skyscraper with the helicopter pad .. That has never been used. Would make a nice observation bar

The smell of the paint was evident, however they moved us into a new room and it was simply marvellous. The breakfast was utterly wonderful with only the best produce used. The Executive Lounge was also very nice. There is a bar on one of the upper levels and it’s a great place to relax and enjoy an evening drink away from the hustle and bustle of Saigon. The pool was nice and cool which in Asia at this time of year can be hard to find. Read less

We have always chosen this hotel everytime we visit to Ho Chi Minh City and this time, everything was good except for the renovation. The renovation was going around at 730am and we can still hear the knocking or drilling at 6pm. What’s worse was I saw a contractor just two rooms next to our room which meant the hotel was giving rooms even on renovation floors. This should not be the case as a five star hotel, they should at least stop renting out that particular floor. If you want a good rest in the afternoon, don’t go back to your room. Other than that, it is a good hotel. Read less

Rooftop Bar is a lovely place to be and has a nice atmosphere. Drinks weren’t cheap but also weren’t expensive. When I came to pay I was confused why a bottle of tiger was 10,000 VND more expensive than draught (thought it should be the other way around). So I asked the waitress if this was correct and all she said was ‘It’s not a lot for you’.… Read more
