Delta Hotels by Marriott Banff Royal Canadian Lodge

Banff, Alberta

The hotel

Giving you that authentic ‘lodge look’, this Banff Avenue basecamp has dressed for the occasion, fitted out in cool stone and warm lumber. It’s a far cry from a little log cabin though, with its dramatic glazed entrance and grand lobby giving a taste of the modern edge waiting in your guest room, with its complimentary WiFi. Ten minutes from downtown Banff’s shopping and dining scene, its lodge-meets-luxury ethos extends to other attractions at Royal Canadian Lodge too. Take the refined Albertan menu at Evergreen Restaurant and Lounge, where local organic ingredients are sourced to deliver that true mountain flavour. And the inviting intimacy of Grotto Spa, whose mineral pool, whirlpool, eucalyptus steam room, and organic vegan treatments are set to a backdrop of slate rocks, tumbling waterfall waters, and cosy tranquillity.

Four star with fine dining the hotel is not! We ate in on our first night. The restaurant has little character or ambiance. The unsmiling waitress kept pushing her hair behind her ears as she served. Food is pretty average, although with fancy descriptions. One day on our return to the hotel at 16:30 our room had yet to be serviced. The floor supervisor pointed out that they had been busy. The room staff came and completely changed the bed - needless as we were leaving the next day. That evening as we went to bed we saw that both the top & bottom sheets had small tears all over. We informed the front desk next morning. This hotel is essentially alright, but needs to considerably up its game. Read less

The hotel rooms are dated but large. We had two sinks in our room, which was really nice. Lots of counter space in the bathroom too. It's located towards the end of town so be prepared to walk a few blocks to get to the center. Also, we ate at their restaurant for breakfast and the service was slow and spotty. My husband & I normally thoroughly enjoy our stay at Marriott properties with his Titanium Elite status. We were vacationing in Banff for our anniversary & my birthday, the staff was rude, barely made eye contact, we were given a room with 2 queen beds, there was mold on the bathroom ceiling, water stains on one of the chairs, the pool was not full [it only went up to our hips..and I’m 5’2”], the ‘complimentary’ breakfast which is normally very good at other Marriott properties was subpar at best with an automatic 18% gratuity added. We ended up being charged for one of the breakfasts, when we approached the front desk they proceeded as if they were doing us a favor by removing the breakfast charge-after being told at check in that both breakfasts would be included. After going out for a morning walk we came back to our room at 9:30 with house keeping cleaning our room, we were in a bit of a rush to get to one of our hikes and asked how much longer or if they were able to come back in a 1/2 hour to finish up, I was told they would be done in 10 minutes-so we sat in the lobby for an additional 10 minutes. We had come from staying at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge [also a Marriott property], where we were treated so kind with wonderful staff, this was highly disappointing given the points and cost of this stay-we shortened our stay to stay elsewhere our last night. The hotel is in a great location close to downtown, you can find much more affordable options in Banff. Read less

The hotel is in a good location and staff were helpful and the rooms are clean. What lets it down is that it needs serious refurbishment. Bedrooms haven't been renovated in a long time. It really is down to the ownership rather than the management team and its poor value for money.

Very comfortable, huge room with 2 king size beds. Large bathroom, shower over bath. Plenty of towels. Free WiFi, good connection. Tea/coffee making in room. Complimentary water in room. Coffee available in reception in the morning. Small bar serving food, also restaurant (didn’t use). 5 mins walk to centre.
