Sunshine Mountain Lodge

Banff, Alberta

The hotel

It could sell out purely because it’s the only ski-in/ski-out hotel in Banff National Park, but the team behind Sunshine Mountain Lodge didn’t think that was enough. Pulling out all the stops, they’ve also packed in the area’s biggest al fresco hot pool, an indulgent spa, a ski boutique (so you can travel light and arrive on the slopes bang on trend), huge windows that frame the incredible scenery, a family room with everything from Wii to a pool table, and evening activities like movie nights, snowshoeing, and tobogganing. Dressed in wood and stone, the lodge delivers on authentic Rockies charm too — and on true mountain après-ski (and pre-ski) treats, with its gondola-side café and crêperie, Canadian bistro, grill bar, smokehouse, and Chimney Corner Lounge, where you can cosy up around the fire each night, with rich hot chocolate.

Staff were really unfriendly with some exceptions. Mixed messages between front desk and restaurant, who were trying to insist on delivering food to my room (which then adds a $6 delivery fee, on top of a mandatory gratuity on a $20 burger). Front desk had told me I could pick it up. Food was served in boxes. All COVID related, but if everything is closed why still charge a resort fee? Just because you can? For the WI-FI and parking? I had just spent two nights at the Jasper Park Lodge which had waived its $30 per night resort fee entirely, and was still serving food on real plates with real cutlery, so maybe that’s just an unfair comparison. Anyway, generally unprofessional staff that seemed to not want to be there at Sunshine Village Lodge. Read less

Staying at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge was a great experience for me. The room was a good size, with a small 2 seat sofa facing the runs and a small outside area to enjoy sunset. Seeing the chair lift whizz by in the morning as I prepared for my day was a treat and the variety of terrain and length of runs was something I have not had in some time. I was lucky enough to score a bluebird and had a unique 360 degree vista across the range. My only regret was that my family were not with me, but we will try to set it up for next year. Read less

Being from Austria, I’m used to staying on Mountains and at ski resorts. This resort is outstanding. The hotel stay, aside from the Views falls a little short in the food selection and presentation. That’s understandable under Covid restrictions. However, under similar restrictions, other Banff and Lake Louise Properties still manage to serve gourmet food on hot plates and with real cutlery. In this respect, the Sunshine lodge falls way short. Eating a lamb shank out of a box with plastic cutlery is so disappointing. The day before, I was told could not pick up the food and there will be a delivery charge. No problem, if delivered on a food cart with hot plates and cutlery. But paying the delivery fee for a brown bag worth $170.00 of food seems opportunistic. Oh, on Friday morning the chimney corner did not pick up phone for breakfast order. Front Desk attendant had to walk upstairs as they did not pick up his calls either. Next day, while explicitly asking for crisp bacon, there was no back at all and the phone remained unanswered again. Had to walk downstairs and ended up returning the breakfast. Even during Covid, there are choices. This week I will stay in Banff where I can get the lobster bisque and steak on hot plates delivered with real cutlery. Then enjoy the view from the chairlift. Aside from the aforementioned issues, I had only good experiences and found the staff very helpful once I got a hold of them. Read less
