Sunshine Mountain Lodge

Banff, Alberta

The hotel

It could sell out purely because it’s the only ski-in/ski-out hotel in Banff National Park, but the team behind Sunshine Mountain Lodge didn’t think that was enough. Pulling out all the stops, they’ve also packed in the area’s biggest al fresco hot pool, an indulgent spa, a ski boutique (so you can travel light and arrive on the slopes bang on trend), huge windows that frame the incredible scenery, a family room with everything from Wii to a pool table, and evening activities like movie nights, snowshoeing, and tobogganing. Dressed in wood and stone, the lodge delivers on authentic Rockies charm too — and on true mountain après-ski (and pre-ski) treats, with its gondola-side café and crêperie, Canadian bistro, grill bar, smokehouse, and Chimney Corner Lounge, where you can cosy up around the fire each night, with rich hot chocolate.

The price was 4*, but not the quality of service or room. Most employees are seasonal, young but inexperienced. Our room was small, clean, but noisy at times. The worst was the restaurant, the Chimney Corner. High prices were charged for substandard food. Being up the hill you unfortunately do not have much other choice in the evening. And there… Read more

The worst was the restaurant, the Chimney Corner. High prices were charged for substandard food. Being up the hill you unfortunately do not have much other choice in the evening. And there was also an insulting 'Resort fee' charged on top the bill. Being so far from Banff it does not correspond to anything. Park fees had anyway to be paid beforehand at the Banff NP entrance. In November there is no minimum stay so its easy to drive out Saturday from Calgary and ski all weekend on a one night stay. Would stay much more often, but the total price is quite expensive, would appreciate a locals discount now and then or maybe a once a year season pass holders deal that makes a longer stay worthwhile (outside of the busiest times, maybe January or a birthday deal). Once there we will be spending more money on food and drinks anyway. Always appreciate the great service, they treat you well. Read less

Sunshine Mountain Lodge is a cool on the hill experience. The staff is amazing and helpful. There are hill activities for Lodge guests and the restaurants are excellent. No need to rush for your ski day and you can be on the hill ahead of everyone else.

Between Shannon and his boss David, we were fully taken care of in terms of disabled accessibility mountaintop. The snow here is too deep for my husband to push my chair through (trust me, first off the bat, he, the groom Brad and his brother Matthew carried me in my wheelchair from the Gondala to the hotel). God love that Newfie strength the 3 of them possess. Shannon and David took it from there, and gave me a ride on the sled to the ceremony site, the Mad Trapper Lodge and then back to the Gondala. They made attending the wedding so effortless. Read less

If you do come after 6pm, the gondola is closed but you can call before and a shuttle will drive you up. The room was comfortable. The staff were all very nice. The only disappointing part was the one night we ate dinner at the restaurant and the breakfast buffet. I felt the food could have been much better. Other than that we enjoyed our stay. Read less
