The hotel

This may be Calgary’s ‘International Hotel’, but they’ve done everything they can to make you feel at home. There’s your private suite of course: covering at least 595 square foot, it dedicates space to sleeping and entertaining, and comes with complimentary creature comforts like bottled water, gourmet coffee, tea selections, and WiFi. But, to make your stay even more homely, the freebies go further, from its complimentary laundry to the ‘Great Canadian Breakfast Buffet’ that welcomes you each morning. If you aren’t still too full from that, their 4th Avenue Lounge is open every weekday for lunch and dinner. They let you do things at your own pace here too, with their new heated indoor pool, sauna, and fitness room open 24/7, so it doesn’t matter what time you return from exploring your downtown neighbourhood’s sights and shopping malls.

I'm not going to complain about the renovations, as the renovations were disclosed on the third-party site I used to make my reservation at International Hotel Calgary. However, I am going to make it very clear that I have NEVER been treated as rudely as I was at this hotel. We specifically booked this hotel because they had a two-bedroom suite with three beds. When I arrived to check in, I was asked if I would like two rooms instead of the one I'd booked. I said no, that I was traveling with friends to celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime event, and we'd like to share one room together - as we had booked. The receptionist walked away for a while, came back and told me that the room we'd booked wasn't available due to renovations. Why wasn't I informed of this beforehand so that I could make other arrangements? They must be desperate for money if they have to be deceptive about room availability. Since our group couldn't celebrate together in the one room we'd booked and was downgraded to two separate rooms (THAT WE DID NOT WANT!), I requested a discount and was denied. The only compensation offered at check-in for the downgrade was free parking. We were told their reservations department would contact us to follow up on a more appropriate discount, but the call never came and no staff knew anything at check-out. Even worse, though, is that I was then subjected to the most insulting, disrespectful lecture of all time from a second front desk agent who just couldn't resist interjecting himself into my check-in process. He spoke to me as though I was a child, literally scolding me for using a third-party booking provider and giving me an "insider travel tip" that if the type of room is really important to me, I should only book directly with the hotel. He spoke to me like a toddler who'd never traveled before (please read my other reviews and judge for yourself if I'm an inexperienced traveler!). How about instead of blaming me for using my preferred third-party booking site, you and your reservations department manage your room inventory appropriately? Or, remove your hotel from third-party sites if they're so terrible that you have to insult guests who use them? This hotel ruined our friend's special event and provided the worst customer service I have EVER received in my "limited" travel experience (which "only" consists of more than fifty countries and five hundred nights in hotels... nearly all of which were booked, problem-free, via third-party sites...). Knew there were renovations happening but expected it to be a little more welcoming and cleaner then it was if they were going to stay open during renos. Outside of that we went for dinner and when we came back tired and ready to lie down we couldn't get in the room. Front desk and maintenance both struggled to help. Finally maintenance got us in but then had to replace the whole door mechanism. We apparently were in a renovated room but it clearly still needed finishing touches. Only plus about this stay was location downtown. Read less

The entire hotel is under construction! We were under the impression that there were only minor renovations being done during our stay. However, with the entire building under renovations, there are numerous safety issues throughout, that made us change hotels!! First issue, there should be no guests allowed to stay during this Reno! There are three elevators, none of which are accessible from the parkade, or from the lobby. Having to carry luggage down flights of stairs, just to get to an elevator!! Secondly, one elevator was “broken” for a week, the second elevator was for construction workers only (they used a special key), and the third elevator would be full of workers and service workers from the hotel!! Many times having to wait 20-30 minutes for the elevator!! (Having 3 suitcases 50lbs and more, stairs are not an option from a high floor). If there were ever an emergency, there is no way everyone would make it out, or for emergency personnel to make it on time. Every room in the hotel had minimal to no heat, no water pressure, or hot water!! Being brought two space heaters to warm the suite was not all impressive either. When leaving the hotel room, you can’t leave them running as that is a fire hazard. Also, The king size bed was two beds pushed together!! Saying we were disappointed is an understatement. Thankfully we were able to relocate through Expedia to an amazing hotel, where we were looked after, and they made sure our stay was memorable. Read less

I am a regular at this hotel because I love the location and the rooms are so big. It’s nice to have a dining and living area separate from the bedroom. And the renovated rooms are quite nice. I am a regular at this hotel because I love the location and the rooms are so big. It’s nice to have a dining and living area separate from the bedroom. And the renovated rooms are quite nice. I stayed a few months ago when the property was under renovation but it was seamless. This time it was the opposite experience. The front desk has been moved such that your only option is to carry your bags up or down a flight of stairs in order to get to the elevator. There was only one elevator working which meant a minimum of a 5-10 minute wait for an elevator and sometimes more. The restaurant on site is closed and there is no room service (not a big deal since there are so many other options around especially with skip the dishes). But the absolute worst thing is that there was no heat. There were two space heaters in my room which could not possibly heat the entire space. For 3 nights I huddled around the two heaters under a blanket in an effort to get warm before bedtime. Floors were freezing. Thank goodness I brought slippers. And although this has been going on for at least a week (judging from other reviews), the front desk said nothing about it at check in. They mentioned the renovations, they mentioned no breakfast, they mentioned no restaurant, they mentioned no room service ... and not a single word about the lack of heat. Shame on you International! Guests should be informed and given the option to cancel the reservation before arrival. And at the very least you should be telling guests at check in that they will have virtually no heat for the duration of their stay. I will not be back until the renovations are complete. I was told they would be complete in June. Read less

Within a very short walk, there are a myriad of hotels that, for the same price, provide a much better experience. I would recommend to anyone reading this to go to the Arts as an example. I have stayed in the International many times and can definitively say that the quality of this hotel has diminished considerably.
