The hotel

Ensconced in stunning natural surroundings, Emerald Lake Lodge is set in the heart of Yoho National Park, overlooking the jade-coloured waters of Emerald Lake. In traditional lodge style, the cosy guestrooms here each have a wood-burning fireplace and balcony and are set within 24 buildings, scattered amongst the 38-acres of grounds and gardens. The magnificent dining room serves exceptional Rocky Mountain cuisine and the Main Lodge features reading and sitting rooms for quiet contemplation. Due to the lodge's remote setting, there's no mobile reception, but if you wish check on life back home there’s a games room with TV and internet access. Emerald Lake Lodge was beyond disappointing. You get there and you need to take a shuttle from the car park to the lodge, which is irritating when you have lots of luggage. For $450+/night, you'd expect the rooms to look absolutely stunning... not run down, outdated and tabby. You can stay at most Fairmonts for less than this. The rooms are dark, I doubt the duvets EVER have been washed, you can't drink the water at the lodge. We dined at both the lounge and the dining room and the food was horrible. They burnt the bottom of the Torta we ordered as well as the chicken gnocchi. It tasted like it was drowned in salt. We called the front desk for more water in our room, they never came. The hot tub was luke warm, there is NO wifi and it barely works in the lodge. I have no idea what they do with all the money people pay every single night to stay there, it is an ABSOLUTE racket. I would never stay again and I would tell all my friends and family to never go here. Maybe for a day trip as the lake is stunning, but never for the lodge. Read less

The lake is the most amazing emerald colour, and it was so peaceful. There is no wifi in the rooms only in the reception. We ate here, the food was fine, the service was chaotic at best. We had to clear the plates from the previous occupants, the child's meal was really spicy. The waiter recommended having the buffet breakfast which was a fantastic idea, whatever you want is on the buffet at a reasonable price. There is an outdoor jacuzzi which is a nice touch, also a sauna. The rooms were large and clean but could do with maintenance and renovation. The door to our block did not close properly, the bathroom looks very worn, the terrace also needed updating. The scenery and location are so beautiful that you overlook these points. Thank you to all the staff, everyone was very helpful. Read less

It was a stunning location on Emerald Lake. We had a great time, but maintenance of the cabins needs a little upkeep if as we had mice get in and leave poop in our drawer. Loved the setup of the room and the fire that was ready to light in the fireplace, but the light switch didn’t work for a while. Overall I’d recommend it but for the price… Read more

Being honest, I was disappointed with Emerald Lake Lodge. For the price we paid, I expected much more. Being honest, I was disappointed with Emerald Lake Lodge. For the price we paid, I expected much more. My wife and I visited with two friends in the middle of a hiking holiday and enjoyed our stay but there were a number of small annoyances. None big enough to fuss about but when added up just tarnished our 2 day stay. PROS: - Beautiful location - the pictures don't lie. - Helpful staff (that try hard) - Excellent food in the restaurant - Nice snooker/pool table - Fireplace in the rooms is a lovely touch. CONS (given we paid USD $430 per night): - The car park is 10 mins away and requires a shuttle. - Our check in took a long time, mistakes with our room, which wasn't ready (at 5pm) - You can't drink water or from the taps (due to turbidity). Everything is bottled. - The rooms are decades out of date. Our shower rail was falling off. The bed was frayed. The brown wallpaper makes the room feel dark. Felt like a bed-sit. - No wifi in the rooms. The wifi only works in the main reception/bar/restaurant and is rubbish at best. This is fine if you want to 'escape and retreat', but not if you want to use your cell phone. - Lack of privacy. We had a lake view room with a balcony and lovely view, but had tourists could walk up as close as a few metres away and so felt that we could be seen. - The hot-tub was over-chlorinated and discolored our swimsuits. (There was a sign, however that's still not ideal..). - The staff were young and inexperienced. All very friendly, eager and polite but it felt like a vacation job for college students, not a professional hospitality venue. - The canoes are an extra CA $70. - We were woken up at 6am by Parks Canada chainsawing trees. Not the Lodge's fault, but again an annoyance. During our check-out we heard two other guests making similar complaints. The staff listened and handled professionally. We visited Moraine Lake Lodge the next day and it looked much sharper. Read less

Rustic. I will allow for the fact that parts of this resort are 100 years old. I feel that they are not keeping up with the maintenance, however. There was a heated floor in bathroom, but no way to turn it off, so the room was a sauna. The room door had a traditional metal key that kept sticking in the lock. Mentioned both of these things to front desk; note taken but nothing was fixed during our two night stay. Our room had a king bed, fireplace, balcony, as well as two large chairs, medium size bureau, closer, small desk with small chair. The room had too much furniture for its size and therefore was cluttered. Bathroom was youngest part of the room and felt modern. Rooms have paper thin walls that let in every outside noise, especially those from adjoining rooms. In a cabin having two levels, ask for the upper level to eliminate the overhead noise from people walking. These rooms come with earplugs for good reason. Read less
