Virgin Holidays' view

Calgary is a cosmopolitan city and the gateway to The Rockies. Cowboy culture is kicking in Calgary, even if you’d rather get your coffee from a hipster bistro than in a tin mug! The lively town of Banff combines astounding natural beauty with first-class hotels and unique culture. From up here in Canada’s highest town (1,383m), the Alberta Rockies look astonishingly good.

Stop 1: Calgary

Say ‘Calgary’, and you’ll probably think ‘Stampede’. Affectionately dubbed ‘Cowtown’, Calgary’s actually much more than its July rodeo. Its role as gateway to the Rockies and beyond means the cowboys jostle with commercialism, and all today’s must-have urban attractions: a social buzz, craft breweries and tap rooms, cocktail bars, high-end dining, and endless pastimes and pursuits.

Day 1: Fly to Calgary

Fly daily from London Heathrow with Air Canada.

Days 1-3: Enjoy Calgary

Calgary may seem like a city of skyscrapers and super-modern attractions, with Calgary Tower’s observation deck, but its past is never far away, with Fort Calgary revealing the city’s origins. Enjoy a morning exploring the city and getting over your jetlag before your adventure continues in The Rockies. Head downtown to the pedestrian mall on Stephen Avenue, where great cuisine and retail therapy await you, while Kensington Village offers the coolest coffee houses to watch the world go by.

Day 3: Calgary - Banff

Coach transfer from Calgary to Banff.

Stop 2: Banff

Banff offers fantastic winter activities with skiing and snowboarding, ice-walking, and snowy sightseeing, plus hot-spring soaks all year round. Banff is fun-loving, with a smart ski-town feel. Bars, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants sit beside boutique shops and galleries. Over the Bow River, the Alpine-style fairy-castle Fairmont Banff Springs hotel offers thermal spa treatments to ease those aching limbs.

Days 3-8: Enjoy Banff

Experience the three world-class ski resorts of Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise and Mount Norquay. This is incredible skiing in a landscape so unbelievable you’ll want to take off your gloves and pinch yourself. In the evening sample the fantastic bars and restaurants in the town and glide up Mount Sulphur on the Banff Gondola to the 360˚ observation deck to gaze over jagged peaks and frozen lakes.

Day 8: Fly home

Coach transfer to Calgary Airport for your flight home with Air Canada.
