Pillar and Post Inn

Niagara on the Lake, Niagara

The hotel

One of Canada’s finest country inns, the Pillar and Post was built in the late 1890s. Since then, it has been lovingly transformed into an AAA Four-Diamond hotel, oozing with charm and elegance. Guest rooms are very well equipped, not only with modern amenities but also delightful contemporary, comfortable furnishings. The sunlight streams in through skylights and there are beautiful terracotta floors throughout. A range of superb amenities include an outdoor swimming pool to splash about in or a heated indoor pool if the weather’s cooler. There’s also a fitness centre with sauna and steam room but the real star of the show is 100 Fountain Spa, perhaps the best in North America. A haven of wellness and relaxation, you can treat yourself to a wine tasting of a different sort here! Harnessing the powerful antioxidant nature of grapes and grape seed extract, your Head to Toe Wine Taster includes a Vinotherapy Facial, a Purple Feet Pedicure and ends with a Vinotherapy Wellness Wrap — pure and utter bliss! Feeling completely rejuvenated, float along to Vintages Wine Bar and Lounge to feast on classic pub fare and local wines. For something a little more substantial, the Cannery Restaurant serves gorgeous steaks and seafood along with pizzas fresh from a brick oven.

Had a great meal as part of our package, next to the dining room fireplace. Shout out to David, our server, who made our dinner even better with his great attitude and attentive service. (While we knew restaurant visits were likely to be limited by Covid19, the staff went out of their way to make things as "normal" as possible, while takings all precautions.) We didn't know till the next morning that the province had decreed that restaurants would have to shut down at midnight. Cudos to the hotel staff, for keeping things "normal" and safe. Our only complaint is minor. Due to the floorplan of the hotel, it can be a fairly long and complicated walk from your (read our) room to the spa and hot springs. We will definitely be back, once things are safe again. Thanks Pillar and Post for a lovely stay. Read less

My husband and I spent 2 nights at The PIllar-and-Post Inn on a package that included dinner at The Cannery restaurant (on-site). It was our first visit to the inn and it was the perfect getaway! The level of service was exceptional, especially in light of the ongoing developments with the Covid-19 crisis. The staff increased precautions and kept guests informed of changes at the inn and in the local area. My visit to the on-site spa was wonderful and I was able to take advantage of the pool, outdoor hot springs (hot tub), sauna, and lounge area. My only suggestion here is that the spa staff should have signs up to ask people not to bring cellphones to these areas and to minimize conversations. I found it annoying to have to listen to other people's videos as they watched on their phones and kids splash and yell in the pool in otherwise peaceful and relaxing area. You wouldn't think that you'd have to have these reminders, but I guess you do. The food at The Cannery restaurant, where we had dinner both nights, was fantastic! We had prime rib, salmon, pork chop, and chicken and all were delicious and filling because the portions were large. On our final morning we had breakfast in the same restaurant, which was good, but overpriced. My only concern about my stay was that when we first checked in we were given a room that was not very nice. It was perhaps in an older wing of the inn, with dated decor, and a very simple and basic look. The room was disappointing and not what I was expecting at all for a deluxe queen room. Because of a loud heating unit we requested a room change and was given a lovely room that was comfortable and elegant, and much more in line with a four star inn. I was very happy with the change, but we seem to have only been given a nice room by chance. And I'm not sure why we were originally given such a shabby room in the first place. Perhaps because we were staying on a package deal? Other than this one concern, I would say that our stay was excellent and was everything we were hoping for in a Niagara getaway. Especially considering the additional challenges that the inn and the staff were facing with the rapidly changing situation developing in response to Covid-19. Read less

I stayed at the Pillar and Post Sunday, March 15th to Monday the 16th with my boyfriend. We dined in the restaurant for both lunch and dinner, we had our massage appointments and everything was fantastic except for the incident explained below. During our stay we asked the receptionist at the spa if we were allowed to have our phones at the spa, specifically the grotto, and she said, "Yes, absolutely." While we were in the grotto one of the maintenance workers (Monday morning around 9am) started very aggressively and rudely, hitting the glass and gesturing to put our phone away. Everyone in the grotto was staring at us as if we did something wrong (while they all had their own phones out too). When we checked out we mentioned it to the receptionist and she stated, "Oh, I'm very sorry that this happened. It definitely should not have happened. I will mention it to our engineering supervisor". She offered us a bottle of water for our trouble! The embarrassment of this incident is worth more than a bottle of water!! At least I think so anyway... Read less
