Pillar and Post Inn

Niagara on the Lake, Niagara

The hotel

One of Canada’s finest country inns, the Pillar and Post was built in the late 1890s. Since then, it has been lovingly transformed into an AAA Four-Diamond hotel, oozing with charm and elegance. Guest rooms are very well equipped, not only with modern amenities but also delightful contemporary, comfortable furnishings. The sunlight streams in through skylights and there are beautiful terracotta floors throughout. A range of superb amenities include an outdoor swimming pool to splash about in or a heated indoor pool if the weather’s cooler. There’s also a fitness centre with sauna and steam room but the real star of the show is 100 Fountain Spa, perhaps the best in North America. A haven of wellness and relaxation, you can treat yourself to a wine tasting of a different sort here! Harnessing the powerful antioxidant nature of grapes and grape seed extract, your Head to Toe Wine Taster includes a Vinotherapy Facial, a Purple Feet Pedicure and ends with a Vinotherapy Wellness Wrap — pure and utter bliss! Feeling completely rejuvenated, float along to Vintages Wine Bar and Lounge to feast on classic pub fare and local wines. For something a little more substantial, the Cannery Restaurant serves gorgeous steaks and seafood along with pizzas fresh from a brick oven.

The availability of excellent cuisine, the helpful staff, beautiful landscaping, two heated pools and the outdoor hot springs make the Pillar and Post a relaxing experience! Also, the amenities are a nice touch: a rose, daily newspaper, plush bathrobes and slippers, and comfortable pillows and chairs.

Terrible experience, moldy, dated, pool exceedingly busy, spa unbookable, hallways are musty, humid and gross. Bed was broken, bathroom in need of repairs, parking not ideal. Not worth anywhere near the monetary value they demand. Has drastically dropped in quality and their focus seems to be as a wedding venue, nothing more.

The planning process was seamless with both the sales team (Grace), and the wedding coordinators (Emily & Rikki). The team was extremely organized, responsive (within 24-48 hours, which was a saviour during wedding planning!) and full of solutions to any inquiries or dilemma's I was having. The ultimate focus on planning from the Vintage Hotels team led to the wedding being thrown without a hitch. During the wedding itself, the team didn't forget a single item that I had asked them to set up, and they went above and beyond to ensure guests were welcome, and had all of their needs being met. They knew our key bridal party members and worked with them to ensure that the bride was not bombarded, and were extremely professional along the way. The venue is beautiful, with excellent food, and is most definitely worth it! Read less

I travel quite a bit so I encounter quite a bit of variety of locations and customer service as far as lodging yet Pillar and Post takes the cake! From the convenience of the location, the quaint set up, cleanliness, amazing food (definitely gained weight during my week long visit), amenities - gym, spa, hot springs, indoor and outdoor pool, various restaurants and above all, customer service. The entire staff was unbelievable and one person stands out - Tim, the guest services manager went above and beyond to make sure our stay was enjoyable. He drove us in their shuttle service, gave us recommendations, shared wonderful and funny stories with us, shared some wine tasting passes and explained booking for the future as we are absolutely interested in returning to Pillar and Post. Tim is a genuinely caring individual and an excellent customer service ambassador of this venue and I truly hope that you give this location a try because it is absolutely wonderful! If there were 6 starts, I'd give 6 without hesitation. Happy Travels! Read less

Stayed at the Pillar and Post during on a weekday. Arrived at approximately 1:30 p.m. and got pre-registered as our room was not ready as check in is at 3:00 p.m. We decided to go to the Lounge for a small bite and drink (see review under separate cover). Went back to front desk and there was a line for check in which we needed to wait in to get our keys. The good news is that they had 3 check in clerks working. I would have thought a pre-registered guest could have skipped the queue and just be given the room keys as this would be a much better customer experience. The room itself was quaint/traditional and was a decent size. The bathroom counter was on the smaller size, however, there was shelving underneath the sink to accommodate your toiletries. If you are looking for a couple of extra outlets and usb ports that were in our clock which at first I did not notice. During the evening they have turn down service and a rose was left in the room-nice touch. Another plus is that the room comes with two robes which are always nice to have. The gardens around the grounds are impeccably kept, they are worth a look. The outdoor pool is a nice size and they have plenty of comfortable lounges. There is an indoor pool and a "hot spring" that is accessed via the spa. The spa itself looks to be top notch although we did not have time to use the services. The hotel has an on-site restaurant as well, The Cannery that offers both dinner and breakfast (see review under separate cover). The hotel also offers a local shuttle that runs 24/7 which happens to be a big help if you are going into town or seeing a play at the Shaw as no worries about where to park. All in all, we would definitely stay again. Read less
