Pillar and Post Inn

Niagara on the Lake, Niagara

The hotel

One of Canada’s finest country inns, the Pillar and Post was built in the late 1890s. Since then, it has been lovingly transformed into an AAA Four-Diamond hotel, oozing with charm and elegance. Guest rooms are very well equipped, not only with modern amenities but also delightful contemporary, comfortable furnishings. The sunlight streams in through skylights and there are beautiful terracotta floors throughout. A range of superb amenities include an outdoor swimming pool to splash about in or a heated indoor pool if the weather’s cooler. There’s also a fitness centre with sauna and steam room but the real star of the show is 100 Fountain Spa, perhaps the best in North America. A haven of wellness and relaxation, you can treat yourself to a wine tasting of a different sort here! Harnessing the powerful antioxidant nature of grapes and grape seed extract, your Head to Toe Wine Taster includes a Vinotherapy Facial, a Purple Feet Pedicure and ends with a Vinotherapy Wellness Wrap — pure and utter bliss! Feeling completely rejuvenated, float along to Vintages Wine Bar and Lounge to feast on classic pub fare and local wines. For something a little more substantial, the Cannery Restaurant serves gorgeous steaks and seafood along with pizzas fresh from a brick oven.

July2019 One night stay at the Pillar and Post Hotel Jul/12/19. We got into town at around 12:30 and although we couldn’t check in, they were ok with accommodating our car being parked while we went into town for a Shaw matinee production. Free parking and free Wi-Fi are covered in the $15.00 (cdn) resort fee – so nice to not have to haggle over each and every incidental. I never thought to ask if they have a shuttle service that takes guests to the downtown area. We got the “summer lovin” package which included a complimentary bottle of wine in our room and breakfast in the Cannery restaurant across from the front desk. Getting to our room reminded me of a quaint motor-inn. Bathroom was in pristine shape and we had a small refrigerator too. Once we were settled in we grabbed our drinks and went and sat outside under the canopied walkway in comfortable chairs/table set up there and watched the bathers and sun lovers by the pool. It was a great way to ease into the Pillar and Post tempo. After awhile the occupants of the room beside ours where the chairs/table had been set up arrived. Although they seemed ok with our being there and we sat for another 10 minutes finishing our drinks and chatted with them at times as they unpacked I felt that our sitting there in front of their room was imposing on their space. We finished our drinks and left. Nothing to be done about the set-up as the placement of the table/chairs is dependent on where the bay window in each of the rooms is. The best thing about Pillar and Post are the truly exceptional mattress, bedding, towels and bathing robes – I have never gone to a place that has all of their linens, towels and robes in such delightfully soft and luxurious condition. Even the tissues in the tissue boxes gave me pause as I noticed they too were softer than ones I have ever used previously. Cannery restaurant – food was delicious, pricey and the place was a bit dark for my tastes during dinner but the light is fine in the morning for breakfast. As it was a celebration of sorts for me, as well as a new dining experience to enjoy I didn’t mind the bill at the end of our dinner. Pool was delightful and empty at around 8pm. Next morning while putting my suitcase into my car the sound of a waterfall drew me over to having a peek over the fence. A lovely outdoor hot tub set up with a bevy of flowers and shrubs and trees with the waterfall, made me realize that I have to go back. Staff are kind and friendly! Read less

Always enjoy the stay here but the property is showing signs of wear and tear plus a lack of staff which is very disappointing. Maybe the owners should concentrate on what they have got as we went to the Price of Wales for dinner during our stay and it was poor. Check in could be a lot better as the front office lady was poor but Tim was amazing!

Tara JOhnston, our event service manager was such a delight to coordinate with. Her professionalism & quick thinking made our success run smoothly. Thankful for her patience in waiting for us to complete our information sheet, and her dedication to staying late working on finalizing all our requirements. THANK YOU TARA!!! The venue was lovely, the food amazing with a wide variety, the staff and front desk were very friendly, accommodating, professional and always had a smile on. Meeting rooms were well lit & ample space for attendees to move around & get engaged during discussions -- a very productive week for us indeed! Most of us are aware the facility is quite old, possibly changing the carpets in the rooms specially would rid the smell of mustiness / wet rag. It is just a bit deflating when you come in to a nice venue, but once you enter your room for comfort & rest, you are bothered by the unpleasant odour. Read less
