Virgin Holidays' view

From dynamic festivals and delicious food to the fascinating history and vibrant arts and culture scene, this is what gives Montreal a lot of its character. Mid-way between Montreal and Ottawa is Montebello where you’ll find the world-famous Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the largest log structure ever built. Canada’s capital, Ottawa, is as charming as it is full of surprises. Pretty parliament buildings by the Rideau Canal blend with lively festivals, unique shops, bars and bustling ByWard Market’s foodie hub.

Itinerary

Stop 1: Montreal

Whatever you’re after from a city, Montréal delivers. In one instant it’s all cosmopolitan cool in downtown; the next all quirky charm in heritage-rich Vieux-Montréal and Vieux-Port; the next all soothing nature in Parc du Mont-Royal; and finally all authentic local living in Plateau Mont-Royal. And that’s all before you dip into The Underground City.

Day 1: Fly to Montreal

Fly daily from London Heathrow with Air Canada.

Days 1–3: Enjoy Montreal

Montréal may have a modern side, but most come for its history — so make a beeline for Old Montréal spots like Place d’Armes, the gothic Basilique Notre-Dame, postcard-worthy Rue Saint-Paul and Place Jacques-Cartier, and the chateau-esque Montreal Town Hall. If modern’s a must, Montreal also has a trendy food, craft beer, and café scene.

Day 4: Drive from Montreal to Montebello

Montebello is only a 75 mile drive from Montreal.

Stop 2: Montebello

Montebello is home to the Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello, the world’s largest log building. This renowned cedar log chateau is an architectural marvel that continues to charm. Wander down the town’s main street or explore the region’s gentle rolling terrain by bicycle.

Days 3–5: Enjoy Montebello

Be sure to visit Parc Omega and in your car, follow a 15km road winding through 890 hectares of hills, lakes and wide open spaces. Open year-round, this unique wildlife park (the only one of its kind in Quebec) allows you to observe several species of wild animals roaming free in their natural habitat including bison, elk, bears, wild boars and wolves. While you’re there, go for a walk along the woodland trails and enjoy a picnic among the white-tailed deer.

Day 5: Drive from Montebello to Ottawa

Ottawa is only a 50 mile drive from Montebello.

Stop 3: Ottawa

Canada’s capital isn’t just home to the splendid parliament buildings and museums, it’s also a young and fun-loving city. Festivals pop up all year, including summer music events, a tulip celebration and the huge Winterlude each February. Year round, cafes, bars, restaurants, galleries and boutique shops around ByWard Market are irresistibly lively. If you enjoy keeping fit, then join local joggers and cyclists along the Rideau Canal and Ottawa River banks.

Days 5–8: Enjoy Ottawa

Ottawa is blessed with an abundance of attractions that will enliven your visit no matter the time of year. Bask in the city’s wealth of historic landmarks — from the iconic Parliament Buildings to the Rideau Canal — all located within its downtown core; marvel at the architectural wonders that house national museums and galleries, before taking in their world-class exhibitions; and, soak in Ottawa’s natural beauty. Not forgetting to discover the different culinary experiences Ottawa has to offer.

Day 8: Fly home

Make way to Ottawa Airport for flight home with Air Canada.
