Marriott Quebec City Downtown

Quebec City, Canada

The hotel

Promising that French ‘je ne sais quoi’, this downtown hotel is totally in keeping with Quebec’s unique French-Canadian mélange. Once you step inside, its elegant lobby would be at home in a sleek Parisian boutique hotel — while the simply dressed guestrooms come with mod-cons befitting a contemporary pad in one of east coast Canada’s most dynamic cities. The dining is just as diverse, with breakfasts featuring Canadian, American and Continental options — while its signature dining venue, Que Sera Sera, lives up to its name with a French bistro-inspired menu. Its location puts you in touch with the city’s French and Canadian roots too, right by Place d’Youville, Quebec City Marriott Downtown is just steps from Porte Saint-Jean, one of the historic and much-photographed gateways to quirky but charming Old Québec.

Staff were very nice. However, asked for a quiet room, was given one on second floor and could hear people in the lobby until late. Thin walls meant could hear my neighbors and garbage trucks in the morning. Not a place for light sleepers.

One of the founders of Marriott Hotels said, “We hire for personality, then teach’m the trades.” This place is a classic example of those wise words. Virtually the entire crew has great personality and superb training. One of the best anywhere. Arriving after midnight still being greeted by a very professional front man. Formally dressed and still fully awake. Had requested a cold beer in the fridge. It was there. Almost elegant lobby and the front team did greet us regularly by name with a genuine smile, “Good Morning, Mr. H….” “ How are you today, Mrs. H….?” Nowhere else seen that. Their Operations Manager, Emilie, superb herself, had done a great job hiring and training them. Special mention of Adelle and Christopher and Kevin. Being Marriott Rewards members helped us getting a suite. Great lay-out but needed lots of work. The hotel is in the process of refurbishing, and this suite still needed it. Very comfy bed. Pillows, good, some even half-sized body pillows. Superb breakfast buffet, Americain, that meant three or four hot choices and countless cold ones, cereals, fruits, “Broetchen (not German but real freshly baked French croissants) sausage and cheese, and good French coffee. Could even ask the kitchen lady (Veronique) to whip up omelets or whatever. Out of this world. Figure about $20, the going rate at good hotels. About every member of the staff got some Hawaiian gift from us. Always taken along for special people. That many? Most unique. The place is spotlessly clean, also great housekeepers. Lots of good toiletries. But the bathroom needs a bidet, especially in this French neighborhood. Sometin’ missin’ there. And a few more wall handles needed. Food in Quebec: The entire main drag, Rue St. Jean, right from the hotel through old Quebec, is full of restaurants to cater to their major source of income, tourism. One big place Paillard (1097 Rue St. Jean) is a must. They got all (!) your wanted eats at about $10 and B+ quality. Ate there several times. And a true Paris Bistro, L’Entrecote (1080 Rue St. Jean.) Unbelievably delicious French food at unbelievably low prices. French onion soup ($4.0,) A. Main entrees, French pâtés ($18.) Absolutely the best anywhere, A+ But somewhere else (up Rue St. Jean) something downright terrible. And also a sushi place, Yoda Sushi (800 Place d’Youville, just around the corner) with some of the best anywhere. That includes us from Hawaii. Go before 8 PM. Overall a highly enjoyable voyage. Well, all good times must come to an end. Au revoir. Good Bye. Hopefully soon. Read less

Staff at this Marriot is amazingly friendly and helpful. The room was neat and clean. The breakfast was not included and was a bit expensive but that was to be expected. Highly recommended for everyone and just next to the walls of the Old City.

The hotel itself is located in what used to be bank and has been redone just beautifully. The rooms are nicely appointed with all the amenities one needs. The breakfast buffet (not complimentary but worth what you pay!) is, again, the best I've had. More than anything though, the customer service has to be the best I have ever encountered and now has set the bar so high I fear I'll never have anything like it again. All the employees we met were beyond courteous, helpful and friendly. I would stay there again in a heartbeat and for anyone going to Quebec City I totally recommend it. This is a PERFECT place to stay! Read less

Everything was fantastic, from the check in with Alexandre at the front desk, to the excellent and welcoming service of Sabir and Kevin the valets. We stayed in room 314 - an absolutely delightful unit with great windows overlooking the streetscape below. The buffet breakfasts were varied and delicious. Wifi was awesome, great television set (with smart connection to Netflix!), and absolutely scrumptious bed and linens. Made for a wonderful celebration overall for these wonderful people in my life.
