Nancy Greene's Cahilty Hotel & Suites

Sun Peaks, Rural British Columbia

The hotel

You won’t just catch world-class skiers on the slopes at Sun Peaks — you’ll be their guest when you stay at Nancy Greene’s Cahilty Lodge & Suites, owned by the Olympic ski champion and her husband and Sun Peaks Mayor, Al Raine. An orientation tour of the resort’s three mountains means you’ll hit the slopes running (or skiing, or biking) straightaway and, on Sunday nights, Nancy and Al welcome you for a reception, sharing ski tips and the week’s weather forecast. They’ve created a real home to return to after days in the great outdoors, with a library with board games, free coffee in the lobby, movie nights with popcorn for little ones, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, and the comfort food dished out in their Cahilty Creek Bar & Grill, all just steps from Sun Peaks Village.

Which is at 10am The queen bed booked was a MURPHY bed-in a $200 a night ski resort hotel! Essentially a pull-out couch-that looked and felt like it was going to come out of the wall. This property is very very old and is showing all of its age, stains, dirty linens, and a MURPHY Bed in as the main bed in a hotel room. Quite embarrassing for Ms. Green to have her champion name attached to a 1-star property Read less

Serviced daily and linen changed half way through our stay. Nothing was too much trouble when we made any enquiry regarding local places to visit and any request was happily obliged. Cannot speak highly of staff both front office and housekeeping personnel. Parking at basement level very reasonably priced and secure. Looking forward to returning next ski season Read less

The attached Pub is really good -they have professional staff, high quality meals at a reasonable price and daily beer specials. The Hotel reception staff are friendly and the cleaners are very good. However, it is a tired old hotel with thin floors and walls. They have ski lockers on 2 levels, but it seems most are kept locked by owners and it was difficult finding spare slots for our skis. Sadly, Bear Country Management are trying to dominate in Sun Peaks with the inevitable impact. They seem to be jamming prices aggressively higher and hence we will be looking for better value properties elsewhere when we return to Sun Peaks. Read less

The hotel looks kind of old and tired and needs some modernization. The room we stayed in (studio, full kitchen) was smalish, with minimal closet space. Kitchen appliances, while working fine, were clearly old. The microwave was hidden under the counter, so one had to crawl to read the dials or put something in. Compact dishwasher was working fine. There was lots of dishes but no choping board and only two sharp knives (one of them hudge). The room had a Murphy's bed. The idea of Murhy's bed is good as an additional bed for some extra guests. However this was the only bed in the room. The mattress on a bed was quite comfortable but there was a gap between the headboard and the matress (around 12 cm) where the pillows were sinking. (BTW – only two pillows in the room). The major problem with the bed was that the black metal legs were protruding beyond it for about 15 cm and on many occations we hit our legs against them. The room had a table, four chairs, two armchairs and two bar stools. To many for such a small room. Not much space left for anything else. Bathroom with a small tub had some mould in corners. One evening the water was just warm, not hot. There was a gas fireplace in the room. Housekeeping was a hit and mis. Some days the room was not made at all. Sometimes they were trying to do the room as late as 7 PM. On two occasions we had to look for houskeeping staff to get rid of garbage or to ask for a towel. We have learnt that the favorite hidding place for housekeeping staff is an electrical room. Also, it was hard to communicate with them due to limited English. There are three ski lockers and only one of them is logically located on the main floor. Unfortunately, all ski racks there were always locked. Two other, larger ski lockers are located on a parking level, so, to get there one must walk on concrete in ski boots through parkade and back upstairs outside. One of the two elevators was out of order but was fixed after three days. Overall it was an okay stay. Would stay there again only if nothing better available. Read less
