Deerhurst Resort

Rural Ontario, Canada

The hotel

Some things stay constant at Deerhurst Resort — like the idyllic setting on the shore of Peninsula Lake in Ontario’s ‘cottage country’ — but others change with the seasons. In summer you could be swimming in the outdoor pools, kayaking on the lake, or taking on the challenge of the inflatable Splash Zone water park. While, come winter, you could be using the hotel’s free cross country ski equipment, snowshoes, or ice skates to enjoy the snow-inspired fun on its very doorstep. Whatever time of year you stay, you can enjoy its location minutes from downtown Huntsville; its Amba Spa; its free Indoor Treehouse Playspace; its pool room — complete with pool, children’s wading pool, and hot tub; and the ‘eat local’ foodie experiences at its dining venues, whose menus even feature shitake mushrooms, honey, and maple syrup right from Deerhurst.

Our local maple syrup association held its annual meeting and Information Day at the hotel. It is a one day event, not requiring overnight accommodations for participants. Making arrangements for the meeting was easy and convenient, the room selected was perfectly sized and set-up for the event with resort staff directly available all day for any desired room re-arrangement or other accommodation needs. All requests to resort staff were quickly and pleasantly dealt with. The buffet lunch was excellent and coffee hot, served at the scheduled times, and quickly and courteously cleaned up by staff. The facility was perfect for our needs. The staff were courteous and quickly carried out their responsibilities and met all of our needs. Thank you Deerhurst for meeting all of our needs and contributing to a successful meeting. Read less

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Deerhurst resort for a couples vacation from Jan 2-5. We were very excited as this resort has received many excellent reviews. We stayed in the pavilion and our room was amazing (although we had to wait about 30 mins for it to be cleaned even though we arrived 2 hours after our checkin time and the bathroom could have used some updating). The weather when we were there was not very good (warm and not much snow) limiting the amount of activities we could do, which is obviously beyond the control of the resort. What we were shocked and disappointed by was the poor service we received and the mediocre quality of the dining/bar experiences. We were actually told by a staff member that "it's really more of a family resort in the winter, and there isn't much for a couple to do" even though couples weekends are heavily advertised. We consider ourselves fairly laid back and easy to please, so it takes a lot to have a bad experience/take the time to write a review. One example of the poor service we received was when we went to the Maple pub to grab a quick drink and watch the hockey game in the afternoon. Despite there being only 4-6 other patrons in the entire pub, it took 20 minutes to get our drinks (one of which was the drink special that the bartender did not know how to make). We were completely ignored by our server after this and it left an extremely poor taste in our mouths. Generally, the staff seemed quite put out and uninformed, unfriendly, and unhelpful which was off-putting, especially at such a highly rated resort. The food was also decent, but not worth the prices asked. The best meal we had the entire weekend was at a restaurant outside of the resort for a fraction of the price. Another highlight was arrowhead provincial park which is beautiful (but again, not related to the resort). This experience could have easily been much different and much better had we received good quality service, however we will not be recommending this resort to anyone, or staying again based on this experience. Pavilion rooms are average at best. Beds good, everything worked but bathroom is unacceptable for what the resort claims to offer. Although most amenities and furnishings are older, the bathroom condition brings the whole experience down. Have a look at the pics. Third floor pavilion.

Place was dirty and not clean when we checked in and we had to wait for another room. Beds were still not made. No hot water in the morning. I went to the front desk to complaint and inform them and they didn’t offer much of a solution.

I have to share how incredible our family vacation to Deerhurst resort in Huntsville was. My family of four decided to go to Deerhurst after New years for a wee family break. We had the best time. Our room was immaculate, new and spacious (2 bedroom Lakeside). The resort was so accomodating to children's entertainment that even though it was not the winter wonderland I had hoped for (there was a bit of rain and the temperature was too high to skate on the lake) there was so much to do to entertain our children. From swimming, bouncy castles, climbing wall, play centre, arcade, winter hiking, live entertainment etc. We had a few meals in the restaurants and they were so good! The pub served the best Cobb Salad and the finer dining option near the lobby had a cheese fondue that I am still dreaming about. Talk about a kids menu - you can get a 5oz baseball steak for your kiddos at such a reasonable price. The staff were so friendly and the servers did a great job. We are so likely to make the Deerhurst holiday trip an annual one because of the amazing experience we had. We highly reccomend the resort to anyone looking to spend quality time with their family.
