Deerhurst Resort

Rural Ontario, Canada

The hotel

Some things stay constant at Deerhurst Resort — like the idyllic setting on the shore of Peninsula Lake in Ontario’s ‘cottage country’ — but others change with the seasons. In summer you could be swimming in the outdoor pools, kayaking on the lake, or taking on the challenge of the inflatable Splash Zone water park. While, come winter, you could be using the hotel’s free cross country ski equipment, snowshoes, or ice skates to enjoy the snow-inspired fun on its very doorstep. Whatever time of year you stay, you can enjoy its location minutes from downtown Huntsville; its Amba Spa; its free Indoor Treehouse Playspace; its pool room — complete with pool, children’s wading pool, and hot tub; and the ‘eat local’ foodie experiences at its dining venues, whose menus even feature shitake mushrooms, honey, and maple syrup right from Deerhurst.

We stayed with another family at the beginning of March Break. We rented a 3 bedroom condo in The Greens. The space was clean, and the perfect size for all of us. The furniture in the other hand was torn with rips in both the couch and chair in the living room. This was disappointing to say the least. At $500 a night I would expect much more from… Read more

Our group of four stayed here for a few nights for a snowmobile trip (Sat, Sun, Mon, Tues). We were assigned to a Summit Lodge close to the main building. The room featured a kitchenette, fireplace, couch and chair with a separate two double bed room. We found the Deerhurst to have a lot of amenities for guests but we were not impressed with a few things. 1. The lack of dinner dining options. The Maple Pub closes during the week leaving the Compass Bar as the only option with only an upper scale menu that was not suitable so we drove to Huntsville for a couple of dinners. For breakfast, there is also the only the one main restaurant that has either the buffet or a menu which was quite expensive . 2. We were not provided with housekeeping service. A phone call revealed that it is only provided in the lodge on the 4th day so we had to call every day for towels and coffee and our old towels were not taken away. 3. Although the Deerhurst advertises that it likes snowmobilers, it appears that they do not. The parking lot despite having a section for trailers was not monitored for such and there is no dedicated overnight parking for sleds. We found many hazards under the snow that could be hit eg lights, stakes, etc. However the trail leading to the lake was well marked. Things we liked: 1. Maple Pub--great atmosphere and food. Too bad it's not open during the week. 2. Pool area--extremely large with lots of seating 3. Décor--the main building hosts a variety of artwork catering to local and Canadian artists. Despite the positives, we will likely not come back in the winter. Read less

This was a very nicely run event weekend. The events were well planned and ran on time with excellent hosts. The condo we stayed in was lovely and the customer service was great. Also a shopping trip into town where many stores were offering discounts for those who were attending the women's weekend. So all round I would give this Women's weekend a thumbs up! Read less

The fine details of a great resort are being overlooked. The lobby chairs look beat up rather than rustic charm. Pathways to Summit buildings aren’t being shovelled, and every entry carpet is soaked and salt stained. we booked a one bedroom in a Summit. The view is beautiful and even though it’s snowy I would have enjoyed sitting out on the deck but couldn’t because it is covered in a foot of snow. A simple shovel in the closet or on the deck would have been nice. I asked at the front desk and they said they would send one or get a grounds crew member to come up and clear it but that didn’t happen. The bed is comfortable. There is no line service or daily room cleaning in the Summit. Linens are refreshed every 4 days - they leave a good enough supply for 2 people to last 4 days. The suite is cozy and the decor is nice. The kitchenette has enough that you could prepare simple meals if you chose to. There are lots of winter activities to do here and most are included in the resort activity fee that every guest pays. Also lots of trails for walking. They offer three restaurants onsite which is nice. We used the AMBA spa for a massage and it was great. The staff were so friendly and attentive to their guests and it was an incredibly busy day in the spa. Read less
