Stayed here for three nights. Room was clean and comfortable with a bright bathroom. We had a lovely view of the harbour. The staff in the restaurant and at the desk were great. Couldn’t do enough for us. The price was also right.

The Coast Bastion is routinely recognized as one of the best hotels in Nanaimo. In the last couple of years, it’s even been ranked as one of the “most romantic” hotels in British Columbia, no doubt because of their gorgeous jetted tub ocean-view rooms. With its contemporary décor and reasonable rates, the Coast Bastion is thus able to offer a subtle refined elegance without breaking the bank. It is for this reason that the Coast Bastion is my preferred accommodation when in Nanaimo. When it comes to location, it’s tough to beat the Coast Bastion. Situated within the downtown core, the hotel is within walking distance of a plethora of Nanaimo’s major attractions: The historic Bastion is right across the street; the Harbourfront Walkway is literally a stone’s throw away; the Convention Centre is literally a two-minute walk; the beautiful and dynamic Maffeo Sutton Park is about 5 minutes down the road; the Casino Nanaimo is but a short distance; and the Old City Quarter is also a mere five minutes away. The Coast Bastion is also surrounded by a number of charming eateries, pubs and shops, should that catch your fancy. Additionally, major transport hubs such as BC Ferries and Harbour Air are within close proximity. The Coast Bastion contains all of the amenities we’ve come to expect of a modern hotel. There’s a large conference space available; a fully equipped business centre; fitness room; and even a salon. For my money, though, Minnoz is the real on-site treasure. Functioning as the Coast Baston’s in-house restaurant, Minnoz places a keen emphasis on style and taste. Both “land and sea” offerings are given their due, but the seafood really takes the cake for me. The Minnoz chowder is some of the best clam chowder I’ve ever had. For more on Minnoz, please see my earlier review on this site. Our accommodation was very comfortable. We had a “Superior Double/Double” room and thus were privy to a decent view of the ocean. It was nice to retire here after a long day and get a restful night’s sleep. We would heartily recommend the Coast Bastion (on Bastion street) to anyone visiting the Nanaimo area. Read less

The hotel was undergoing extensive renovation, which did not affect my stay at all. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful, helping me to sort out where to park my oversized truck. Because of my corporate affiliations and previous stays as a guest, they did not require a deposit. My favourite place to stay on Van Island.
