Fairmont Empress

Victoria, Vancouver Island

The hotel

Over 100 years old, this legendary hotel is the symbolic centrepiece of Victoria and exudes regal grandeur in abundance. Beneath the ivy-clad walls and chateau-style architecture, however, you’ll find only the most modern of amenities, ensuring an extremely comfortable stay. A lavish afternoon tea is served in the magnificent Tea Lobby, surrounded by handcrafted tapestries and polished hardwood floors and is a local tradition not to be missed. The Empress Room serves classic cuisine with an eclectic twist which will tantalise even the most discerning of taste buds. For a delicious curry buffet, head to the Bengal Lounge, which takes inspiration from Queen Victoria’s role as the Empress of India. There’s also an impressive martini menu, so enjoy! The Veranda overlooks the Inner Harbour and is the perfect place to relax with a drink and a light lunch before embarking on more sightseeing. Other amenities at the hotel include a lovely indoor swimming pool, a children’s wading pool and fitness centre. The Willow Stream Spa is an oasis of peace and serenity with treatments galore to leave you feeling truly pampered and in the peak of health.

What can I add to comment on this fabulous, famous hotel? It was just as wonderful as I recalled from some years back. What can I add to comment on this fabulous, famous hotel? It was just as wonderful as I recalled from some years back. They added a new wing in typical Fairmont style of silvers and cool colors but the historic part of the hotel remains as it was for the most part. The location is unbeatable with views out the front windows of the harbor. It was easy to valet the car and check in. The concierge made dinner reservations for us and advised on driving conditions. We were in a large corner suite 430-432 which had a great view and we saw the water taxi dance in the harbor. At night you get a view of the Parliament building all lit up. The room was comfortable, just luxurious and modern. There was a king bed in a large room with furniture, chests of drawers, chairs, etc. The other room had a sofa bed, chairs and coffee table and a desk. Both areas had their own bathroom, one with just a shower and the other a shower/tub. They gave us robes, slippers, toiletries and plenty of towels. Both rooms also had their own closets with a safe and plenty of hangers. The temperature controls worked well. Just luxury. We had tea which you must reserve. It is a big production and expensive but worth it. I have never seen such a presentation of various teas. Read less

I'm a regular guest at the Gold Club. My recent stay was very pleasant, the suite was beautiful and spacious. There are a few things that I've noted, though. The booking was for three people, but the amenities were only for two. After having called housekeeping for toiletries, they only brought shampoo (no lotion, shower gel, nor conditioner). The bathrobe that they brought was very worn and had to be replaced years ago (photo attached). Some of the towels were absolutely disgusting (photo attached). I had to call for bottles of water. Also, after turndown, I had to request pillows for the sofa bed, as these were overlooked. I know these are only insignificant details, but the hotel boasts exceptional service that Fairmont is world-renowned for, and their prices reflect it. Just a little more attention to detail is advisable. Read less

While waiting for our Butchart Gardens tour to organize, my wife and I entered this beautiful hotel to have a look around and use the restrooms. It was an unusually hot day in Victoria and we were tired and thirsty. While looking for a drinking fountain, my wife was approached by a young woman who asked if she could help us find something. Her name was "Maeve" and I believe she worked in the "Q' restaurant. Maeve invited us into the restaurant and poured us glasses of ice water. She then answered our questions about the hotel's history and Victoria in general. She is a lovely person. Based on her hospitality, I would love to return to Victoria and stay at the Empress. What a beautiful grand old hotel. Read less
