Fairmont Empress

Victoria, Vancouver Island

The hotel

Over 100 years old, this legendary hotel is the symbolic centrepiece of Victoria and exudes regal grandeur in abundance. Beneath the ivy-clad walls and chateau-style architecture, however, you’ll find only the most modern of amenities, ensuring an extremely comfortable stay. A lavish afternoon tea is served in the magnificent Tea Lobby, surrounded by handcrafted tapestries and polished hardwood floors and is a local tradition not to be missed. The Empress Room serves classic cuisine with an eclectic twist which will tantalise even the most discerning of taste buds. For a delicious curry buffet, head to the Bengal Lounge, which takes inspiration from Queen Victoria’s role as the Empress of India. There’s also an impressive martini menu, so enjoy! The Veranda overlooks the Inner Harbour and is the perfect place to relax with a drink and a light lunch before embarking on more sightseeing. Other amenities at the hotel include a lovely indoor swimming pool, a children’s wading pool and fitness centre. The Willow Stream Spa is an oasis of peace and serenity with treatments galore to leave you feeling truly pampered and in the peak of health.

The computers did not work at check in so we had to leave our bags with the desk and walk around and come back (twice). They gave us a map and it was fine overall. Then when we were finally able to check in they had me and my life long friend in a king. I asked for two queens and so they "upgraded" us to a double queen that is apparently more spacious. The hallways and ambiance up until then were all beautiful. Upon entering the room I was overwhelmed with dust. It was visibly everywhere. Old mismatched furniture. No outlets in between beds on the stand. Just the one outlet behind the night stand which had the lamp taking up one of the two spots. Glass on the ledge in shower was broken and covered with a tray. Not impressed for this "luxury hotel" or for the price. We have one more night here. If they had updated rooms with basic amenities I would return to stay. I would come back for Q bar or the high tea, but this room shouldn't be more than $90 as is. A few updated decor peices does not "updated" make. Read less

I've been staying at the Fairmont Empress for approximately 15 years. I can wholeheartedly endorse this property and the team of employees. I've been staying at the Fairmont Empress for approximately 15 years. I can wholeheartedly endorse this property and the team of employees. I know most of their names, their stories, and their interests. Why?? Quite simply because from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave you are treated like family and not just a guest. They'll laugh with you, smile with you, or give you the space you need to relax. I wish this could be duplicated, but so far I've only seen this at The Empress. Read less

The Empress is our go-to hotel when we visit Victoria. The rooms are lovely and the overall ambience is wonderful. Only major gripe would be the price of room service which is quite frankly over the top even by luxury standards. Notwithstanding the room service costs, the hotel is very good and highly recommended.

We stayed at this iconic hotel for a couples weekend... and although it is pricey, the indulgence is worth it. The staff make you feel so welcome and valued. The lobby is lovely, the hotel amenities are nice, the Q restaurant is excellent!!! We had a harbour view room, spacious and well updated. Very Comfortable. The bathroom is small... but they have done the best they could with overall design. Awesome Shower! The room was very comfortable, I appreciated the Keurig and had brought my own k-pods from home. The turn down service was wonderful. The hotel is so enjoyable to just spend time in, savoring the rooms... the hallways and little boutiques. The LOCATION is exceptional. You can walk everywhere and we did! Right across from the museum, art galleries, parks, parliament buildings. That was worth everything! And the restaurants. We had lovely breakfasts at the Q Restaurant with great servers and a super Maitre'D. We also ordered evening room service and found the food tasty and lots of unique options. I have to especially comment on Lee, the Valet. It seemed like he was there EVERY TIME we left the building! He was very enjoyable to visit with. ALL the valet staff were awesome. They saved us on our Sunday afternoon drive, by advising us of a major road closure and so we were able to make alternate plans. I have to give a shout out to lee (valet), charmaine (front desk), alix and phaidra (q restaurant) and the housekeeping staff who made our weekend stay so pleasant! Vancouver Island is a must see... and Victoria is a beautiful city! Read less

Recent trip to Victoria for our sons wedding. Thought it would be fun to stay at this iconic “luxury “ hotel with so much history. Wasn’t horrible, but for over $550. For one night in their special “Gold” area of hotel was expecting something special. Wasn’t special at all. Next night stayed at a nice boutique hotel one block from Empress. Beautiful view of Harbor. Bathroom with full luxury tub and separate shower. (No tub at empress, ok shower), Fireplace! (Empress had fake fireplace video playing on big screen. Seriously!) other hotel had honor bar and free snacks / water in room and Napresso coffee maker and pods for free. Fairmont Empress is a rip off trading on their ancient history. Oh and instead of $550 at Empress, $187 at our far superior boutique hotel. So sad that I threw that money away! Read less
