The Oswego Hotel

Victoria, Vancouver Island

The hotel

A sophisticated space, The Oswego Hotel is an upmarket urban escape just a stroll from Victoria’s Inner Harbour and downtown delights. Oozing style through every inch, you can laze in the lounge with its comfy sofas and grey stone walls, unwind on the patio, or head into O Café and Bistro to drink and dine. By morning the bistro brings you breakfasts of Bond Bonds Bakery pastries, with your caffeine-fix courtesy of Bows & Arrows Coffee Roasters. Then, come evening, it dishes up sharing plates of local and foraged food, sometimes served up with live piano or jazz. Of course, you could simply retreat to your room, with its gourmet kitchen dressed in stainless steel, slate, and granite — and there’s always in-room dining if you’re no Nigella.

A pleasant surprise, this boutique hotel just blocks from the inner harbour and Legislature area downtown. We live in Victoria but needed refuge during a home reno: space to sleep & work for a week along with our Great Dane, where we could cook for ourselves. The Oswego provided on all fronts, adding spectacular views; as well as high-end decor and lobby, and super-friendly staff. It is in a wonderful location, on safe and dog-friendly streets (ie there’s lots of grass!). Check in was friendly and efficient. Our dog was greeted like a superstar. The suite was clean & quiet. We were in a premium two-bedroom on a higher floor, w/ a second bathroom. Both bathrooms were fairly posh, including a soaker tub in the one. Beds do seem a bit small for Queen size, but the comfortable mattress and bedding made up for it. Both bedrooms were spacious, each with a dresser, TV & large closet. They both had doors opening to the balcony and functional windows. That + ceiling fans made it easy to keep temps moderate. It's rarely hot in Victoria, and careful use of the blinds and windows and fans would keep the suite comfortable for about 362 days a year! The kitchen is well stocked, with stove, fridge, dishwasher and microwave, kettle and two kinds of coffee maker. Lots of dishware, cookware and utensils, but bring your own seasonings, oils, etc. There's a bit of coffee, sugar and cream to get you through the first morning. Luckily there are several places nearby to buy groceries. Lots of choice for seating to eat/work (bar seating at the kitchen peninsula or the high-top table). The living area had a very large sofa (with pull-out bed) and easy chair and an ottoman with storage, as well as a smaller footstool. Flatscreen TV here wasn't the best but it's sufficient -- it's almost too big for the proximity of the couch. Balcony has seating for four. Overall, it was ample space for two adults and a giant dog, even though we mostly stayed in each day/evening. We needed the room and light to preserve our sanity mid-reno, and it worked! We hit the lobby bar for mid-day coffees and snacks, and regretted not trying breakfast/brunch. Their hours were limited (COVID) but it looks like they're opening up again fully next week. Hotel gym is small but well-equipped and laundry facilities are available. Staff everywhere were friendly and attentive. Parking was easy and secure -- we asked for a break on fees and it was granted -- worth asking for longer stays like ours. Nightly pet fee is $25, but caps out at $100 per week. The hotel supplies a treat for your pup, as well as bedding, a few waste bags, and a map of the best local dog walks. They don't just allow pets, they welcome them! Our only complaint all week was sporadic WiFi, but the hotel confirmed they are upgrading service within the next week. Very highly recommend, and if we're chased out of our house again for any reason, this will be our first choice of hotel! Read less

Returning to the Oswego Hotel during COVID was a brilliant choice! The property was spotlessly clean and compliant, so much so that a "covid" resistant copper front desk was installed during the time I was a guest as a step up protective measure. The staff is always personable and no request is denied. I loved the space with great lighting, music, full kitchen, abundant washroom supplies and coffee, views, easy parking, and, most importantly, I felt totally safe in the hands of this team. Clearly the best place to stay in Victoria for short term or long term stays. Read less

Instead, we were upgraded to a two bed suite on the top floor with a huge balcony. We were also given complimentary breakfast. We could not have asked for anything more. The suite is very well equipped and the bed is especially comfortable. The staff were wonderful, especially Nathan and Raya (spelling may be incorrect). All of downtown is within easy walking of the hotel and with a 25% discount for staying four nights made it an amazing value. Small complaints: no HDTV, only standard definition, and AC would be really nice in hot summer weather. The Oswego is highly recommended. Read less

From the warm welcome that my 3 dogs received to the dog bed and treats waiting in the room for them was amazing! Everytime we would leave or enter the hotel the staff said hi to the dogs by name and offered pets to them all. As for the human side Oswego is excellent! The rooms are clean and well organized. The beds are comfortable and the hotel is located in the most perfect place in downtown Victoria. Everything you'd want to visit is within walking distance of 20 minutes tops! The staff are all very friendly and super helpful! Really this is the best place to stay in all of Victoria! Please do yourself a favor and stay at the Oswego Hotel! You won't be disappointed!
