The Douglas, Autograph Collection Hotel

Vancouver, Canada

The hotel

Uniting Vancouver’s urban dynamism with British Columbia’s ‘outdoors’ spirit, this boutique hotel was inspired by the Douglas firs that swept along False Creek, where the hotel now lies. In fact, they’ve even installed a replica 25 foot fir to greet you on arrival. There’s nothing artificial about the 200 native pines and 15,000 local plants in its exquisite rooftop park though – six stories up, it’s the pièce de résistance for Parq Vancouver, a unique dining, entertainment, and hotel complex that provides the backdrop for The Douglas and its elegant yet environmentally conscious rooms. As part of Parq Vancouver, you get the key to all its attractions, including the stunning Spa by JW, a huge casino with around 600 slots and 75 tables, a fitness centre, and eight restaurants and lounges, including rooftop hangouts The Victor and D/6 Bar & Lounge.

I am lucky to travel quite a bit, both for work and pleasure. As an event host and performer I'm am booked into some very decent hotels, especially in Europe. When I found out I was going to be staying at the Douglas I went to the website and I thought it looked pretty good. Well the website does not do this place justice! The minute we pulled up the doorman greeted me with a genuine smile and ushered us into the giant, sparkling lobby (it's shared with the adjoining JW Marriot.) The first thing that caught my eye was the casino on the second floor. Somehow I missed that on the website so I was very excited and spent a lot of time there. My room on the 16th floor was the perfect temperature, clean and well appointed with dark furnishings, plenty of seating, ample lighting, and plenty of outlets and places to charge my phone. The bathroom was a great size, well lit, and the large walk in shower had an overhead rainfall shower head. My room was literally so quite and comfy I felt so at home. The Executive Lounge was a perk that made my stay even more enjoyable. I enjoyed all of the savory and sweet offerings and illy coffee throughout the day. The location was perfect for me. Uber is new in Vancouver so I was happy to see it and most of my destinations were only a few dollars away. I even walked up to Davie Street one afternoon, a short brisk adventure that gave me a view of the city. Overall I can't rave about the Douglas enough. I highly recommend it! Read less

We had the most amazing staycation at the Douglas during the beginning of December! We were wowed about the amazing decor, friendly staff (amazing marble bath) and spacious rooms! Stayed 1 night at the Douglas and was pleasantly surprised that all the great reviews were indeed correct. Had a standard king room facing BC place (view was pretty good). Being that this place is only 3 yrs old, the room was not worn by any means. The Douglas section is a select side inside of the Marriott hotel (6 th floor) from what I could… Read more

Being that this place is only 3 yrs old, the room was not worn by any means. The Douglas section is a select side inside of the Marriott hotel (6 th floor) from what I could tell it had more character than a franchise Marriott (hence the autograph tag on the name). I would stay again, if I could catch a good deal. Read less

This was a great experience, with a couple of things that could have been even better. Arriving at the Douglas is a little disorientating - the lobby is on the 6th floor of a Casino complex, bookended by the Douglas and the JW Marriot. When we arrived, we self-parked downstairs and were directed up to floor 6 by the attendant who is stationed at the curb. The front-desk welcome was warm and the immediate impression of the lobby and adjacent bar + outdoor area was impressive. It's spacious and tastefully appointed and we lingered in the bar and heated patio for a couple of comfortable hours. The room was spacious and the bathroom quite stunning, with our favorite Aesop products everywhere! We didn't spend much time in the room, but it was comfortable and had a nice outlook to the neighboring stadium. What could be better? It would have been nice to have a fridge in the room to keep drinks cold. The bedding had a small blood stain by the pillows that was easily visible, but this was addressed promptly and professionally. It took a while to get our checked bags from storage upon final exit, the desk was unattended, but this was solved 10 mins later with a smile. The decor is charming, if not a shade too industrial-glam that it needed to be. The wall art work, in particular, was a miss. For a new building, we were surprised to be able to hear the adjacent room on the phone from early in the morning. These things aside, I would definitely return - it's a great base for exploring most of downtown Vancouver. Read less

5 stars with one foot note. The location and uber access isn't for everyone. So "location" aside, this is a truly fabulous hotel. Rooms were amazing, staff was absolutely most helpful and the design is special. It's attached to the large Marriott via a convention/meeting area. So I can imagine there are times when the crowds might be a bit tough. We were there during a hockey game weekend and didn't notice any special crowds other than a complete lack of Ubers/taxis. Which continually posed the biggest challenge for both days we were in town. Not sure why the shortage, but I know Uber is only recently "back" in Vancouver. The location is down at BC Place in Yaletown. A newish area that attempts a hip vibe but is really just at the edge of the more interesting section. On the "if you get lemons, make lemonade" scripture, we ended up just walking into town and the 1 or so Kilometer helped offset all the food we ate during our trip. Read less
