Villa Eyrie Resort

Malahat, Vancouver Island

The hotel

Giving you a fresh outlook on Vancouver Island (quite literally), this mountainside hideaway creeps up towards Malahat’s summit to reveal coast and mountain views from its perch 1,880 feet above sea level — and yet it’s still just half an hour from Victoria. Covering 95 acres near wineries and Goldstream Provincial Park, it may have been inspired by Italy from its architecture to its menus, but it’s still completely in tune with its stunning Canadian surroundings, with farm-to-fork food at Summit Restaurant, island-sourced ingredients in Tuscan Spa, and views of Saanich Inlet through the floor-to-ceiling windows fringing its mineral-rich saltwater pool. Even its bar mixes Italy’s love of racing with the local influence of Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit, with its Driver’s Lounge rich in nostalgia from its crackling fire to its vinyl record soundtrack.

We stayed at Villa Eyrie for 2 nights in December, in a junior suite to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our accommodation was a huge disappointment. The suite had a six sided area for the bed, open to a sitting area with a sofa and 2 chairs and a TV. A two person tub, accessed by 3 stairs, was set in a nook beside a closet. The sleeping area had a king bed, but was designed for a smaller bed. As a result, the bed was pushed against one end of the wall and there was only room for one bedside table. There was a TV on one wall, but it was parallel to the bed. A very odd, cobbled together arrangement. Similarly in the living area, the TV and the one floor lamp, were placed at an end wall, with the sofa facing in another direction. There were 2 baseboard heaters and a gas fireplace in the suite - only one baseboard heater was working. In the bathroom, a shampoo/conditioner/body wash dispenser in the shower has replaced individual bottles. The body wash compartment was empty and there was only half a roll of toilet paper left when we checked in and no additional roll. There is only one towel bar in the entire bathroom; no hooks or additional towel bars to dry your towels. The plugs in the sinks did not stay closed. My husband, to keep water in the sink while he shaved, had to get on his knees and tighten the unit from under the sink. It was an easy adjustment but not one a guest should be required to make. There was a closet with rods and hangers but no drawers or shelves or dressers to place your clothes - guests are left to live out of their suitcases in this "luxury" resort. Our dining experience was more positive; the food was excellent. The attention to basic hygiene however, was lacking. When I used the washroom during dinner, the washroom was out of hand towels and the garbage bin was completely full. I let the staff know about the hand towels and when my husband later used the washroom, the hand towels had been replenished but the garbage bin remained full to the brim. I sent a detailed email to the Villa Eyrie after our visit and spoke with their customer service representative. The staff person was very pleasant and acknowledged that our stay had fallen short of their standards and agreed that the furniture and tv placement in our unit did not make sense. She offered us a complimentary night at the Villa in a different room but we have declined this offer. Read less

We booked the Villa Eyrie for a 3 night getaway for our 35th wedding anniversary in November. We were supposed to be celebrating in Maui but of course due to the current pandemic we had to cancel. Picking Villa Eyrie for our celebration was a no brainer. We have stayed here once before for one night and have wanted to return and enjoy a few more nights, so here was our opportunity. We arrived a few hours early to enjoy happy hour in the restaurant and were told our room was all ready for us - AND that we were upgraded to a lovely suite in the beautiful building at the top, Villa Cielo.......WOW, what a lovely surprise! We had a drink and went to our suite. The room and view were amazing and a beautiful card and bottle of bubbly were awaiting us. We stayed in on the first night and enjoyed our suite and the fireplace and had brought a picnic but the following two nights we ate in the restaurant and again were treated so wonderfully. They had a special table in the window for us on both nights and were just fantastic navigating new protocols. Our entire experience over the three days was fantastic, from the front desk staff, to the restaurant staff, to the staff that brought us ice to our room. We will definitely return again, especially because we are in Victoria and it's a quick drive to get to this lovely location. Read less

Historic Malahat retreat from the Aerie Resort days but modernized and fresh. Room was spacious and private, in building away from reception and restaurant. Good Wi-Fi and quiet. Food in Alpina restaurant was great; albacore tuna; duck breast; celery soup and tempura cheesecake; Italian seafood pasta. We’d visit Villa Eyrie for the food alone. Top-notch friendly service. We made a reservation for Dec 22-25 and then asked for the December discount be applied to the first 2 days (blackout dates for the special offer are clearly marked as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). Customer service would not honour the discount for the non-black out dates as the last night was to be Dec 24. The bill for the room only was around $1100, and we would have easily spent that amount again eating all of our meals, and purchasing drinks while there. Plus, I wanted to see if this would be a good spot for a group of international colleagues/friends coming (hopefully) in early summer. That bill would have easily been 5-6 times this amount. Because of their pettiness, I cancelled the reservation and will find another resort for the future plans when subtracting the 20% advertised on their website would have been around $100. Considering there are limited amenities due to COVID-19, I would have thought this was a no-brainer. Read less
