Villa Eyrie Resort

Malahat, Vancouver Island

The hotel

Giving you a fresh outlook on Vancouver Island (quite literally), this mountainside hideaway creeps up towards Malahat’s summit to reveal coast and mountain views from its perch 1,880 feet above sea level — and yet it’s still just half an hour from Victoria. Covering 95 acres near wineries and Goldstream Provincial Park, it may have been inspired by Italy from its architecture to its menus, but it’s still completely in tune with its stunning Canadian surroundings, with farm-to-fork food at Summit Restaurant, island-sourced ingredients in Tuscan Spa, and views of Saanich Inlet through the floor-to-ceiling windows fringing its mineral-rich saltwater pool. Even its bar mixes Italy’s love of racing with the local influence of Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit, with its Driver’s Lounge rich in nostalgia from its crackling fire to its vinyl record soundtrack.

Amazing one of a kind location with view! Great staff and atmosphere with great food! Simple selection but quality over quantity here. 👌 Had the eggs Benny with local steelhead and it was perfect. Even the greens were tasty! 10/10 would recommend and come back!

It is a bit isolated at the summit of the Malahat Highway but we found it was a good location for visiting Butchart Gardens, the Malahat Skywalk, Duncan, Shanigan Lake, the trestles, and Lake Cowichan. We booked a classic room and lucked out in getting room 115 with a partial view of the beautiful inlet. The room was very large with a fireplace, bathroom had double sinks and a fabulous rain shower. The bed was extremely comfortable with lovely linens. The entire staff were very welcoming, professional, helpful and overall friendly! The restaurant was great! We lucked out and sat on the deck each meal which added to the delicious food. We had two spa treatments which were very pleasurable. The restaurant manager, Jack, was the star of the resort! Very personable and outgoing. He made us feel at home with a big welcome each meal. We would recommend this hotel but do understand a car is necessary due to the hotels location. Read less

Then he comes back 10 minutes later with 2 cans of beer, i was shocked by this. i think we should have been moved to a new room, and beer?? it should have been a bottle of wine. Then we have reservations for dinner, we order an appetizer it was burned unable to eat it ,we sent the appy back, the rest of the dinner was good, mean while 2 tables of VIPS come in the service they got compared to our table was night and day difference. To make matters worse they charged us for the burnt appy. i have never been treated so badly anywhere and i have a hard time recommending this place. Read less

I took my husband there for his birthday the last weekend of June. We appreciated very much the truffle chocolates that were left in our fridge with a birthday note! The front desk people were very nice and helpful. We did have a few suggestions for the resort that we might not have worried about if we’d paid an average price for our stay but, at the prices the Villa Eyrie charges, I feel these are fair comments. First the dinner experience. I booked a 7 pm dinner reservation two weeks before our arrival, stating that this was a birthday dinner and could we please have a nice table. When we arrived at 7, there was not a single indoor table available! And yet the reservation for us was in their book. Did they just give away our table? So we were lead to an outdoor patio area where the host had to hastily rearrange a table for us. No cloths, no flowers, like an outdoor pub table with hard chairs. This particular patio area has an awning overhead that, according to our server, is not retractable so it was like a little hothouse. Considering that we were in the midst of a historic heat wave that weekend, which was predicted several days before we arrived, you’d think perhaps the Eyrie would have gone to Canadian Tire and purchased a half dozen fans to place around their patio areas for the comfort of any outdoor diners? Our server was pleasant and I’m sure doing her best considering the heat. My meal of pork tenderloin in mushroom sauce with spaetzle was delicious although there was not another vegetable in sight. My husband’s Jägerschnitzel was slightly scorched around the edges. But both dishes were tasty. Nothing phenomenal but tasty. The wine list prices were astronomical. The cheapest bottle was $72 for a BC Mission Hill Reserve Sauvignon Blanc which retails in BC liquor stores for $19.99. So not sure how they justify that. From there, the price of an Okanagan wine went up to $82 then leapt up to $107 … Also, it would be nice to offer one IPA beer option. Overall, the restaurant experience did not impress us, especially after it started off so badly with our reservation basically not being honoured. Next the room. We had a Master Double Suite with “rain forest” i.e. mountain views. It was beautifully clean except for the deck surface which could use a scrub. It was comfortable with a quirky layout but understandable since the resort is built on a hillside. Unfortunately, it was the HOTTEST weekend ever recorded on Vancouver Island. The a/c in the suite was very necessary and worked well. The a/c unit was noisy (one of the noisier ones we’ve experienced actually) when trying to sleep but, without it, it would have been unbearable. A small sink in the coffee-making area would have come in handy. The drapes were too short by a couple of inches along one window so the sun came in quite early. Some type of umbrella or awning would be nice on the balcony because, on a hot morning, it’s impossible to sit outside with coffee. The 2 robes we had (nice to get robes for sure!) were both made for a small to medium sized woman. My husband could barely get his arms into either of them. The check-in/ check-out is 5 pm and 10 am. We were graciously given until 11 to check-out. Again, for the price of $379, that’s pretty late and pretty early. Hopefully after Covid is over and staff are easier to find again, they will extend from 4 pm to 11 am as most hotels do. We just felt that the Villa Eyrie overall was not the best value. We felt we were paying for the name. It should have felt more luxurious. We're glad we tried it but I don’t honestly think we’d go back. Read less

The views were spectacular, the food at the restaurant was superb and service there was great But the hotel service was mediocre at best. We were in the top rooms in Villa Cielo. High up in the mountains the view was astounding. Watching the eagles and other birds flying below you was amazingly peaceful. But the hotel seems to be on a downhill slide. They need a manager that understands when you charge $500 a night guests expect perfection. The suite would have been superb if a little more care was taken. Scuffed up furniture, stuffing popping out of one of the chairs, an unfinished piece of 2 x6 holding part of the bed up. And cheap toilet paper. Some of the staff were quite snooty, not truly welcoming. I felt like I was intruding when I had questions and they were doing me a favour by deigning to talk to me, giving me confusing directions and snippy answers to justified questions. Also - be warned if you have an electric car. They don’t have a proper charger available. Take care to be fully charged and able to get back to Victoria as the only charger they have gives about 3 km an hour and there are others that will need to charge as well. Luckily we were there for 3 days so we managed (between letting others charge) to get enough to get back to town. Not super impressed. Will go back to the restaurant for the food, service and view but won’t stay there again at those prices with the staff attitude. Read less
