Prestige Oceanfront Resort

Sooke, Vancouver Island

The hotel

Proud and stately, Prestige Oceanfront Resort is no retiring wallflower, welcoming you with its ostentatious columns, grand balconies, waterside setting, and elegant lounge filled with plush furnishings and a glitzy chandelier. Its equally decadent waterfront patio is decked out with fire pits, so you can sit out long into the evening and enjoy the hotel’s views, which stretch out over Sooke Harbour, Sooke Basin, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. To go with hotel essentials like complimentary WiFi access and a 24-hour fitness centre, they’ve laid on an indoor pool and hot tub; the suitably indulgent Le Sooke Spa; complimentary sightseeing treats like bike hire and beach toys; and two dining options — the chic West Coast Grill and the sports-themed Vault Lounge, with its gourmet pub grub menu.

I made the mistake of staying here in November. The bathroom smelled of mildew. The room was not clean. Come on. In the time of COVID this is especially important but these guys have failed miserably. To top it off the have staff that show attitude towards guests? Do yourself a favour and avoid this terrible hotel property.

Stopped by with family to enjoy a meal but upon entry saw that none of the guests in the lobby were wearing masks or social distancing, and staff were not making any effort to enforce this. There was a large wedding happening with guests milling around the lobby. We opted to leave as it did not feel like a safe environment.

There is an element of sloppiness that irritates. What could have been a four star rating slipped to a two. In order of events: while the hotel has a prominent sign re masks, guests came through the lobby without while checking in. After unloading the luggage in the room we noticed potato chip pieces (see photo) around the couch and other areas. Someone didn't vacuum? At $250 the promised ocean view with balcony turned out to be a room at the end of a tunnel (see photo), surrounded on both sides with the wings of the hotel. Even in mid summer you would only have a few hours of sunshine on that deck. Bringing the cleanliness issue to the attention of the front desk was immediate followed by an offer to send staff to vacuum. We declined. Every hotel we stayed at over the last few months has a no staff entry into a guest room while you stay there during the covid epidemic. Mentioning that the room doesn't really qualify due its very limited view of the ocean channel as 'ocean view' was followed with:' how much would you like to pay'. At the surface generous, but when we suggested that it was at the hotel's discretion, we were told that 'let me see what I can do'. In view of lack cleanliness and lack of value a room change would have been appropriate. When he didn't ask for the room number and turned to the next guest it was clear that he had no intention of doing anything. Read less

Hotel is lovely, and we are not sure if the very limited hours of the coffee shop were Covid related or if this was the regular operating hours. Check in is at 4:00.....coffee shop closes at 3:00.... would have loved a coffee or tea as we needed a pick me up after travelling. The grounds were well manicured and had it been summer instead of fall,… Read more

During Covid and the upcoming long fall / winter with limited options for entertainment, my husband and I have decided to book one local BC getaway per month throughout the winter. This all in an effort to save our sanity and support the BC tourism economy. Our first Fall trip was Sooke Oceanfront resort in Sooke. Danielle sent me an email with recommendations on things to do in the area and Jacob took such good care of us from the moment we arrived. The property is stunning and situated on a marina where you can catch a whale watching trip, join a fishing charter or rent kayaks to tour the local bay. And the easy hikes in the area are numerous. I really recommend a weekend at the Prestige Sooke Oceanfront to experience a true BC weekend and recharge the batteries. Read less
