Blue Waters

Antigua, Caribbean

The hotel

This is a truly superb recently refreshed hotel with elegant surroundings, outstanding service and an enviable location on two white sand beaches lapped by gentle aqua waves, epitomising the Caribbean fantasy. The 17 tropical acres of gardens are beautifully tended and each of the buildings is romantically draped with brightly coloured bougainvillea — just adding to the delightful ambience. There's plenty to do during the day and you'll no doubt be tempted on to the beach by one of a generous array of water sports. Tennis and table tennis are popular and there's an 18-hole golf course 5 minutes away. Wind down in the evening (if you haven't done so already!) with a delicious coconut crush — liberally splashed with local rum — while you watch pelicans dive and swoop for their meals. Your dinner can be taken at one of the hotel's gourmet restaurants, complimented with an excellent Claret from the wine list. An amazing holiday experience.

We’ve stayed at Blue Waters in Antigua twice before and this, our third visit, was the best yet. Simply excellent. Didn’t want to come home. First, the whole complex is very beautiful. The gardens are lush and manicured, and although you’re drawn to the Caribbean sea, sunset, beach, etc, I noticed the architecture and styling too. So often it’s left to get grotty round the edges, but this has taken on a new kind of swank without screaming refurb. The original charm remains, but everything feels a better quality than before. Small touches like the plantation shutters, thoughtful lighting, very comfy Lloyd Loom chairs and gorgeous bedding. This really matters because if you are indoors on the odd occasion that it rains, you don’t mind. It’s honestly a very beautiful place to be indoors. Secondly we were on the all inclusive which has improved a great deal since our last visit. The same extensive choice but better quality. Sunday lunch and the evening BBQ was especially good and lobster Thermidor at The Cove on our last night really quite special. I used to only eat lobster when visiting Bar Harbour, but this was fresh, flavoursome and had good texture. Thirdly the staff are all very jolly and helpful. This is an important point because it wasn’t always the case. Everyone wants you to have a lovely day and they can’t do enough for you. The woman who did our housekeeping was singing to herself! Finally since our last visit they’ve added the Spa and it’s grrrreat. Not cheap (but this is Antigua), but $120 for an hour long exfoliating massage left me floating and ready for the flight home. Celeste was superb and overall worth every penny. They put on cabaret/dancing/wine tasting/bands, etc, in the evening, we went out in the speedboat and snorkelled (their reef isn’t as big but fish per square foot would rival Australia!), watched a wedding, spotted numerous interesting birds, made use of the golf buggy to nip about and found a few goodies in the shop. All in all if you want to relax in subtle luxury this is the place. Not too blingy, ostentatious, in your face - just stylish, great service and attention to detail. Will definitely be back. Wonderful, relaxing family holiday! I have just returned from 2 weeks at Blue Waters with my husband and 17 month old daughter and I would definitely recommend it. The property is not huge (we were expecting something bigger but I’m not sure why), but it was adequate enough for us to walk with the buggy after dinner but a longer walk would have been ideal. The food is lovely.......fresh, lots of choice with a mix of buffet and a la carte, fabulous BBQ with good service. We did struggle on the odd day but we were there for 2 weeks so overall we were not disappointed. We had a couple of niggles with our room and a taxi but they were sorted immediately (and by immediately I mean by the time we returned from dinner after raising it!). We did a couple of trips out to St Johns & English Harbour of which I would recommend both. The hotel staff are super friendly and cannot do enough for you so if you do have any issues or requests let them know as they will do everything they can to help you! Finally the atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful but not too much so you can’t enjoy yourself. It seemed to suit couples and families in equal measure. There are not many places I’d return to as there is too much to see in the world but this would be one! Read less

From the moment we arrived it was pure paradise, the rooms were spacious and clean, the bathroom was huge with a stunning roll top bath. Pools and beach so clean and sun beds comfortable. The food in all Restaurants was amazing especially the cove a must try if you visit, not to mention the yummy cocktails round the pool and delicious wine in the evenings. We were lucky enough to be guests over New Year’s Eve and wow! What a night the food and entertainment was just brilliant all topped off with fireworks to bring in the new year. Unfortunately for us the new year brought our own challenges, my little boy fell ill with bronchitis and was admitted to hospital in the capital St Johns for 4 days and 3 nights. This meant that my husband and I and mum and dad had to miss our flight home. I can honestly say I have never felt more at home so far away every day my husband and I would return from the hospital at lunch time for a few hours to eat and shower, we were met with staff who were so concerned and supportive, nothing was too much trouble. Every single member of staff from the gardener, housekeepers, waitresses, receptionist and management (Kevin and Nicole) were truly wonderful. The staff made our terrible situation so much more bearable and when we were discharged and came back to the hotel with my baby boy they were all thrilled and could not have cared more. We hope to return one day and experience Blue Waters for all its glory. If you are looking for somewhere set in pure paradise, wonderful food, beautiful views and the most amazing staff I have ever had he pleasure of meeting then this is the place for you. Thank you so so much from the Fardell’s, Ditton’s and baby Henry xxx Read less

There are some opportunities for improvement: -The bed and pillows were hard as rocks -The towels were paper thin and rough -Water pressure in the shower was non-existent -The "Do not disturb" sign kept blowing off the door -Part of the resort, the part that would have the best view of a sunset, was inaccessible because someone had rented out a house that gave them exclusive access to it -We didn't pay for all inclusive, but I would have been upset if we had as it seemed that everything had a charge in addition such as bottled water In the end, the most important thing for a hotel is the quality of sleep and it wasn't there.
