The hotel

Watched over by Fort Barrington, Royalton Antigua lives up to its name – letting you live like royalty with almost every treat included in their All-In Luxury® promise. You can sip handcrafted cocktails, surf the WiFi, snorkel and kayak in the bay, and even try out scuba-diving with an introductory lesson – all without dipping into your holiday spending money. And you can dine without picking up the tab too, with more than a dozen restaurants and bars covering everything from beachside burgers to sumptuous steakhouse classics. Adding their own special twist, they also feature extra touches like their Sports Event Guarantee™ (so you can watch big sports events on TV) and weekly pool and beach parties.

I ordered room service 8.37pm only to recieve a telephone call at 10.00pm, informing me that they sent my order to the wrong room. Senior management did not have a handle on how to address the occupancy levels and made us feel they were doing us a favour opening during this time of uncertainity. When booking this holiday, no-one knew Corona Virus would raise its ugly head. Went on a Time Share share tour, although Royalton will call it sonething else. The deal is non-sensical, they have not literature on the package so it is all verbale until you sign a 27 point contract which to the naked eye seems great. However if you are an experienced traveller, you will quickly identify it is utter rubbish and you will lose in the long-term. My advice do not waste your time on the tour. The staff team were brilliant, sadly though they are trained to be conserative and unable to relax with guests during conversations with their guests. The Royalton has potential and would do better if they take advice from Jolly Beach Star fish resort hotel which is a 3* hotel with a 5* service. Dale and Alex excellent management team. I went there after checking out of Roylaton. Sadly I will not return to Royalton Antigua although I return to Antigua every year for a vacation. I will return to Jolly Beach Star fish hotel, even though its 3* money, well spent and experience fantastic. Read less

We spent 13 wonderful days at the Royalton Antigua March 3 to 16. Our check in at the Diamond Club was quick and easy, our room was perfect -9th floor overlooking the bay and the ocean. Our room was always cleaned promptly, the fridge well stocked, wine always in our room, turn down service every night- couldn’t ask for more! The staff was wonderful always smiling with a friendly greeting. Many thanks to our two butlers, to Alfredo who was always around with a cheerful greeting and smile , William, who was absolutely superb, bartender Lisa, at several bars, and Levi at the beach bar and way to many staff to list, but everyone went out of their way to make our anniversary holiday outstanding! The beach was great the ocean warm and easy to get into. The property was kept immaculate. The meals were to die for-everything hot and well served and perfect. We dined at the buffet for breakfast. There was a good selection from 3 omelet stations with many choices of add ins, to pastries and fresh fruit and juice. There was a great selection at each of the specialty restaurants, our favourite being Hunters. We reserved our dinners every night through our butlers-no problem We are not sure where all the complaints we read in past reviews came from. they almost made us cancel our vacation. We are so glad we decided to go ahead. It was one of our best holidays ever. Thanks again to everyone for making our holiday a great one! Read less

Cake birthday sign on door balloons in room. It was so great our son felt very special and made our trip that little more special for him. Suzan who is fantastic in guest services was a text away for anything we needed during our stay. We rented the cabana witch was our favourite days. The kids club was great for our four year old she would love to spend time playing there and she met lots of resort buddies. There is a beautiful huge playground area next to the kids club our kids enjoyed a lot throughout the day. This is a wonderful family resort. We can’t thank Suzan enough for all she had done for us. Everyone on the resort working smiled and waved anytime we pass them. This resort is really allll about that beautiful beach!! It really is so great. If you like beautiful views and sandy shores this is your spot! Really enjoyed Antigua! Read less

I must disregard the adage “if you can’t say something nice” and let you know about our recent stay at the Royalton Antigua Resort and Spa. I don’t usually write reviews unless things can be moved forward and I write the following with this hope: While I believe that some of the staff tried their best with what they had to work with, there was little evidence of training and the staff was not operating with the appropriate tools to get the job done. There was absolutely no leadership to oversee the staff, which yielded inconsistency in providing seamless hospitality. That being said, I cannot recommend this property to anyone. Let’s start with DISHONOURABLE BEHAVIOR in reservations – both hotel and restaurants: ROOM RESERVATIONS: We arrived with our confirmed pre-paid reservation. The Royalton refused to honour this price in spite of our receipt and charged us an additional $2,408.00USD on top of the agreed-upon reservation. In hindsight, we should have left immediately. I would like a refund for the additional amount paid, however I would also like world peace and that’s more likely to happen – and it would take less time than the two-hour check-in process, as there was no management in place to oversee the staff and our front desk person had to disappear behind closed doors for each question towards resolution. As a result, the hotel was already diminished in our view by this behavior. RESTAURANTS: Since we already had to pay a higher price for our stay, we chose not to pay an additional fee to be Diamond Club members. This was a good choice as we observed the blatant disregard by the restaurants to reservations made by these members. In addition, the restaurants were typically out of the additional choices specifically for Diamond Club members. (Did I mention, we were told restaurants did not require reservations in the first place?!) BEACH: We were also told that beach chairs did not require reservations or holding. DO NOT BELIEVE THIS. As of 7:00AM every morning, all the beach chairs had been claimed. I know this because I had to get to the beach by then if we wanted chairs. The beach is the best thing about this property and staffer Fyha singularly did his absolute best to ensure the comfort of all the guests. We saw only a few fights over beach chairs. PLEASE, INVEST IN ENOUGH BEACH CHAIRS FOR BOTH REGULAR AND DIAMOND CLUB GUESTS. Further, the use of the beach is not well-planned. The beach should be extended for guest use and put the volleyball and various storage huts elsewhere, along with the noisy “Vibe Team” leading activities. (At the very least, please educate your Vibe staff in microphone use – yelling in a microphone is never a good idea.) FOOD & BEVERAGE: This can be divided into LACK OF CHOICE and LACK OF AMOUNTS. For a property which considers itself to be five-star, I’ve seen better menu choices on children’s’ menus of any establishment. Brace yourself for chicken wings, chili hot dogs, hamburgers, quesadillas and pizza (if they have any). I was hoping for a nice piece of fish; however there was none to be found. “We’re out of that” was the constant theme to our experience with the Food & Beverage - both at the restaurants and with room service. I couldn’t imagine the breakfast buffet being out of bananas three days in a row, especially when I saw plenty of them at the beach bar each morning. Our beach neighbors tried ordering pizza from room service, only to be told the hotel was out of pizza (in spite of an Italian restaurant on the grounds). We ordered a cheese plate at 4:10pm and it was finally delivered at 6:15pm. The reason being given was they were out of crackers. When I suggested they cancel the cheese plate, it miraculously appeared – pathetic, though it was. By then, we had to run to dinner if we were going to get a table or get a chance to eat whatever they were going to run out of that day. The eponymous steakhouse, named for Stephen Hunter of Sunwing Travel Group, was frequently out of steak. HOUSEKEEPING: We had to chase down the housekeeping cart for hand towels and washcloths – most time we were told they “were out of them”. FACILITIES: Smoke alarm went off daily when they sprayed for insects – coming in through the ventilation system of the buildings. Not entirely comforting. In conclusion, this property has a lot to learn about hospitality – at least the time we visited. Any hotel can say that it is a five-star hotel or a three-star hotel. I give this maybe two-stars at best only because the rooms and property were nicely-appointed … with a strong Buyer Beware to all! Read less
