The hotel

Every Starfish resort is set beside a beach and what a beautiful beach this is, with soft white sand and glistening waters it’s an open invitation to don your bathers and walk right in! This hotel doesn’t break the bank, Halcyon Cove offers simple, value-for-money accommodation in a great location, on the shores of Dickenson Bay. While the rooms here are basic and the resort has maintained the same simple Caribbean charm for many years, it remains an ever popular holiday hotel for repeat guests. Besides splashing about in the sea, there’s plenty of water sports on offer to keep you fit, if you prefer your sports on dry land. I've come to this island quite a few times now to visit family and often stay at The Jolly Beach. This time I decided to stay at Halcyon in room 280 Beachfront room. Ok the good bits. Amazing beach on the doorstep. Lovely secluded end of the bay. Housekeeping, comfy bed, bar & restaurant staff were brilliant working with the tools and resources they had available. Fab omelettes & cocktails. Warri Pier Dinner night fab. Kareem the tour man fab always a smile regardless whether you buy a tour or not. The staff make this place! Now for the bad bits. No water sports - non existence we came first a morning kayak across the bay. We were promised them but no show or intention. Entertainment - Poor apart from the steel band. One night we decided to socialise at the outside bar. But nobody was there as all the guests had received an invite under their room door for a cocktail party! Apart from our room!! Inefficient admin or delivery I guess. So we drank up and left. Animation Team - Where and Who were they, must of been invisible. We didn't see or speak with anybody in 2 weeks. Rooms - Desperately need updating & refurbishment quickly. Adwark Restaurant - Felt like a canteen more than a restaurant. Could be really good with a change of interior design and lick of paint. Children's Area - Non existence. SUMMARY This Hotel has fantastic potential. It has a prime spot with good room sizes and variations. Recreation facilities need tidying, painting and maintenance issues sorted. Will I stay again. Not next year. I will go back to the sister hotel the Starfish Jolly Beach and visit Halcyon Cove to check out if the promised improvements have been made throughout!!!! For the same price as their sister Hotel I would like to see major improvements before I book again. Read less

This hotel was so disappointing, we expected it to be a little in need of attention but were still surprised at the need for a real upgrade to the rooms, sanitary wear, electrics, etc, And most disappointing of all was the general unhappiness of most of the staff, in fact I would agree with other reviewers that some were just rude, especially the the bar staff, We were certainly polite and wanted so much to enjoy a deserved holiday but felt that our week there was certainly long enough, I will say that Dave the pool and entertainment guy is not included in this statement, he and the reception staff were the exception, The pool although they seemed to Chuck in a lot of chlorine everyday and use a portable pump for an hour in the morning there was no sign that the pool was being filtrated whatsoever, it was stagnant throughout the day we choose not to go in. The food was ok, the entertainment overall was disappointing, All I can say is, I would not go back to the starfish again and would definitely choose another hotel, Antigua 10, starfish 0. Read less

Small but very friendly. Limited menu but all the food was really good. The staff work really hard. The pool, bar and beach really close. Loads of returning clients. Definitely good value and highly recommended.

We were allocated adjoining rooms 404&405 AVOID! They are terrible. Expected dated after reading reviews before i booked and travelled. Had no bath, fridge, iron. Other guests had been staying near our rooms and complained - they were moved to rooms with the above amenities and said they were much better. This was after the reception staff had to be pushed to allow them to view other rooms that were available. They were adament they were of the same quality. This was definitely not the case. I used the shower room on the day of departure, it was quite pleasant and a LOT different from the 2 rooms I had been allocated. Entertainment is vast... Nothing for children - the kids club was non existent, whether it was too quiet to open it up I'm not sure. A member of staff did approach me mid way through our holiday and ask if the kids would like to do some activities in the pool the following day - I jumped at the chance for my 7, 10 & 12 year olds as they were getting very bored by then. She didn't show up, and it never happened. We were looking forward to the Bingo written up on the board for one of the evenings - something to do! Again - it didn't happen. Same with the ring toss on the beach, beach volleyball etc. The beach is stunning! The view of the beach too :) I found the staff very rude and abrupt. I recall 2 gents who worked there that actually acknowledged me and my family - The chef making the omlettes of a morning, and Uncle Dave round the pool, who I did see doing pool aerobics (one activity I saw) When you'd ask for a drink at the bar - the staff would not even look up most of the time. I am big on manners - these were definitely missing. The weekend we arrived had a lot of locals staying on day passes, family and friends of staff from what I could make out. The children were particularly rude - more than one little boy standing poolside, urinating in the pool in full view of everyone. the parents did not bat an eyelid. We were approached to be asked to share our snacks. This was by adults. I am by no means a complainer, this was just some of the experience I had sadly and i would not want anyone else to be this disappointed. Read less
