The hotel

In a spectacular elevated setting above Jolly Harbour, Sugar Ridge is a family-owned, independent, boutique hotel set amongst sugar-cane —hence the name! — and indigenous flora providing a beautiful setting — it really is the sweetest thing. Located on 11 acres of sloping parkland surrounded with colourful, indigenous flora and fauna, this certified Green Globe Hotel is fashionable in design and offers unparalleled views over the Caribbean Sea, palm-lined beaches and the headlands to Five Islands Bay. Tiered guest rooms are bright and spacious with stunning views of your spectacular surrounds. Contemporary in style, they’re also elegant, providing the perfect home-from-home experience. Ideal for a relaxing couples holiday, this hotel really does offer the best of both worlds — intimate seclusion with beaches, shopping, dining, galleries and attractions within easy access. Dining at the hotel is a treat with two distinct restaurants. Enjoy stunning sunsets and fine dining at Carmichael’s or discover the more casual buzzy atmosphere of the Sugar Club Restaurant, with both indoor and outdoor dining and live entertainment three times a week. Packed lunches are available for those of you who plan to explore the island. There are no less than three pools to choose from at the hotel and to make sure you're completely relaxed, pool attendants will be there to offer snacks and drinks, complimentary water scented with tropical fruit and refreshing cold scented towels. We booked this trip with a few add-ons for a 50th birthday celebration as part of Aveda's Pure Privilege program and absolutely loved our experience. We got to know the staff and, while we didn't go for the all-inclusive, enjoyed lingering over breakfast in the open air restaurant, spending time in our personal plunge pool, lounging by the communal pool and good conversation over happy hour. The staff was extremely courteous, knowledgeable, and professional while also being down to earth and a joy to chat with. July is obviously a quiet time of year for the island, but we found it to be relaxing and just what we wanted from our vacation; yet we found plenty of time and opportunity for own fun. In the spirit of getting back what you give in life, we left the resort and island - reluctantly - amidst hugs and well wishes among our new found friends. Wishing you guys all the best! See you all again real soon... Read less

Well the subject says it all. Like most people that come here it was through free Aveda pure privilege points. When I first arrived waiting for my bestie I grew up with, I was greeted with a delicious rum drink and cool towel which however it went downhill from there. - first we got the all inclusive however this was not the all inclusive you think of. There is no access to food outside of their set hours. Also they didn’t have a huge variety. And on top of it they had this salad that had tortilla chips and guacamole on it so we asked for a side of guacamole and chips later and they said NO! I mean come on this is an all inclusive you need to bring us what we want! - then the was the worst part, my friend got a Tito’s and tonic drink on Saturday. On Sunday we asked for it and they gave it to us again. I signed the check ($0 bc all inclusive) but 2 min later the waitress came back to say Tito’s is not included in the all inclusive. I said OK. Can you believe she trotted over 5 min later with a new bill to sign to pay for the drink!? I said “I’m sorry I am absolutely not signing that, send your manager if you have an issue”. - the atmosphere is dead. There was no body here - the place just sucked and I would not recommend it to anyone. While my friend and I had a great time together, I can say for certain we would never come back here! Please take my advice and don’t even waste your pure privilege points on this trip!!!! Read less

Island transportation, via taxi, is available at the hotel, but negotiate the price in advance with the driver, not the hotel. Our two drivers, Captain Spencer and John Henry, provided great information about Antigua. The hotel provides transport (very scary) to two different beaches - Turner's Beach and The Nest. The Nest is bigger, but Turner's is cleaner. Read less

Nobody else seemed interested in dancing but we had a blast. The nice lady in the restaurant for breakfast was the sweetest and worked so hard to accommodate us and make sure our breakfast was perfect even when we were a few minutes late for breakfast. I love the whole island but this hotel made it extra special. I don't normally stay at places that aren't right on the beach but this was such a special place that the easy walk to the beach was hardly noticeable. Read less
