Ok....so it's expensive, but is it worth it? We just left after a week and we splurged on a water view Butler room. I have no idea on the service offered I'd you don't purchase a Butler level room, however, now that I have been there once, I am not sure I would splurge on the Butler level room again. If you don't know the restaurants, or it's your first time to Sandals, it might not be a bad idea of you can swing the $. Keep in mind, the cost Sandals gives you includes everything, including tips to staff EXCEPT your Butler which should be $50-80/ day. We had three different butlers during our stay and the level of service did vary dramatically depending upon who was assigned to you that day. Here is my biggest problem with our experience. I love good food and used to cook in various restaurants in my younger days. I know what it takes to make quality food day after day and to be honest, Sandals isn't trying very hard. We had breakfast delivered to our room one day and I ordered eggs Benedict. The eggs were way over cooked even though the meal was 20 min late, there was hardly any Hollandaise bit the kicker is the hash browns they served were little triangle frozen patties....not what you expect from a place that calls itslef 5 star. The "nicest" restaurant is la Parisienne. My steak, I should have taken a picture, was maybe 1/4" thick and looked like Salisbury steak. The Italian restaurant il Cielo is not as good as Olive Garden to be honest. The best meal we had, and we are not big Indian food people was at Bombay. The naan bread was made fresh and the Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Marsala were great. I get that getting certain quality on an isolated island can be difficult. But Sandals has purchasing power across all thier resorts and they are of a large enough size to get routine shipments of higher quality ingredients. It would cost them money I sure, but as great as the service and the beauty of the grounds were, the C grade food will probably keep us from returning. Read less

We traveled to Sandals Emerald Bay for a week late December/early January to celebrate the New Year and my birthday. My husband wanted to plan a trip as a birthday surprise for me so he reached out to our Travel ANGEL (because Travel Agent just doesn’t begin to describe how awesome she is ) Amy McHugh with Dream Makers Vacation Services on his own to enlist her help. I normally take care of all of the booking details with Amy, so he had a lot of questions, but she handled every question about this booking as if it were her own vacation. She even made sure everything was in place and hidden until I opened my present showing the booking information. Even after that, she made sure that the resort knew it was a special occasion and followed up with them about all of the details and special requests. Everything was even more perfect than we could have imagined and we didn't have to worry about any of it. Truly, she and her husband, Mike, just take all of the worry and anxiety out of planning a trip which is a gift in itself. Thank you!!!! We arrived at the airport after a quick and pleasant flight and were through immigration and customs quickly, even though another flight’s last few passengers were making their way through. Apparently their flight wasn’t provided immigration forms onboard so they were all trying to fill them out in the arrivals area. When we went outside to the Sandals kiosk, our bags were marked with the exact room I’d requested (thank you Amy and SEB!) and were surprised to see the GM Jeremy Mutton there to welcome us and drive us to the resort himself. What an amazing surprise! We felt like rockstar VIPs. When we got to the resort, we were greeted with more hugs and “Welcome Home” and birthday wishes, a cold drink and cool towel. Also there to welcome us was the wedding manager Shalise since my husband had also asked to do a retie the knot vow renewal on my birthday. I can admit that I was a little nervous/unsure of what to expect with that and Shalise put me at ease from the first moment we chatted. She said we’d meet our on site coordinator at our appointment a few days later and that everything would be taken care of at that time in about an hour or so. Right away I knew we were in good hands. We then saw Treco Rose and were so happy to know that our request to have his butler team was also honored (I know I’m repeating mystelf, but THANK YOU Amy and Jeremy!) Even If you don’t get the opportunity to have Treco as a butler, do yourself a favor and search him out to say hello. He is such a kind soul and has such a positive outlook on life that you just can’t help but feel energized after chatting with him. You’ll also get the chance to meet his wife, Nicole, who is also a butler at SEB and an amazing young woman in her own right. Our friends we traveled with had arrived on the earlier flight so Treco took us to the Bahama Bay bar where they were waiting. We had a quick lunch there and Treco returned to take us to our rooms which was awesome since we were there a few hours before actual check in time. We had each and every request for drinks, etc. in our room and even had a sun umbrella on our patio since I’d mentioned in our requests that shade was very important wherever we’d be set up on the beach/pool. I know some people wonder if any one reads the requests/preferences made and I can say that ours definitely were. We spent the week fully enjoying the beach and the quiet pool, bouncing back and forth between them. The weather was wonderful all but one day that was a bit windy so we were able to enjoy the ocean. We normally travel here in September/October so the water then is very warm and I was wondering if we’d be able to enjoy it in January. While it wasn’t the bathwater warm we’re used to, it was warm enough to spend time in. We did buy 2mm swim/dive shirts that definitely helped us spend a lot of time in the waves comfortably. We bring our own inflatable hammock style floats which allow us to really enjoy that water, so I highly recommend if you have room in your luggage. I won’t go into all of the restaurants and such since food is so subjective, but we had very good to amazing/excellent meals the whole week. We did the 9 hole scramble on Thursday afternoon and if you aren’t a big golfer but just want to give it a go, this is the perfect way to do that. If you just want to see the back 9 of the golf course, definitely take a walk out through the lobby to the guard shack and they can direct you to the walking path that will loop you out and back. That is a must-do at least once. Our butler team of Treco, Anndeka and Theon was incredible. The three worked well together and information was passed/shared between them so well that we didn’t feel like we had to re-request or ask anything again when one would go off shift and another would come on. We had great surprises in the room, snacks appeared just about the time we’d start to think we should call for something to eat and our room was always stocked/restocked with what we’d used that day. The main thing I wanted to cover was the RTK (retie the knot) experience since that’s something that was a first for us in all of our Sandals trips. Start to finish, my experience was flat out amazing. Even though this was a vow renewal, the whole team from the initial emails and call with the pre-trip organizer through the ceremony and reception treated me as if I were a first time bride and ensured that I felt special, understood and cared for. Granted, we went with the simple ceremony without a lot of add ons/events and only had two friends join us, but if anyone ever wondered if doing a destination wedding would feel like a “real” wedding and not seem to be mass produced, I would HIGHLY recommend the experience based on mine at SEB. I know there were other couples getting married and doing vow renewals the week of our trip because I saw them in the Footprints paper, but they made us feel as if we were the only ones. I realize that may sound odd, but the point is that they don’t make you feel like you are just a number or are asking the same question they’ve probably answered a hundred times already that week. We met our onsite coordinator, Rochelle, the day before our ceremony and she had all of our details we’d discussed with the pre-planner on the phone in hand. She poured us some champagne and went over everything again (cake, appetizer selections for our cocktail reception, our signature cocktail). We got to choose a restaurant for our wedding dinner, and she called them right then for the reservation. We picked a special breakfast in bed to be delivered to the room on the day of our choice and confirmed music selections/requests, when and where we needed to be the next day and even called the photo shop to request the AMAZING Kenny to be our photographer. She then took us to our chosen ceremony venue, showed us the backup to be used in case of bad weather, the location options for our cocktail reception and then we were off to enjoy the day. Truly, I didn’t have to think or worry about anything – every detail was set and all I had to do was be ready the next day on time. The ceremony was perfect in every way. Rochelle even called our room that morning to confirm times and be sure we had no other questions. The venue (royal gazebo) and weather were perfect and the short ceremony was beautiful and we were very blessed and honored to have Jeremy, Treco and Emma, the Loyalty Manager, attend along with our friends. We were both very touched and surprisingly emotional when we saw the small group there in front of that amazing blue water waiting for us with the minister. After, we moved to the little hidden gazebo near the bandstand to find our table set with linens, china, our cake, champagne and signature cocktail. Our chosen music was playing and we cut our cake, toasted the day and had a “first” dance as well. This all went off without a hitch at the direction of the amazing Davina and it was gorgeous! Kenny with the Photoshop/Epix team is an incredible photographer (and human being as well) and got wonderful shots of the ceremony and reception and then took us to the beach for some fun, candid shots. We normally don’t take or like many photos of ourselves but we ended up liking so many of the shots Kenny got that we wound up purchasing a small package of them. He was able to capture the mood and feeling of the morning perfectly. I can’t explain it well, but the images weren’t staged/cookie-cutter wedding photos; they were candid, in-the-moment shots that transport me back to that day. I think that’s the sign of a true artist; thank you Kenny! I also found out later that evening that while I and my friend were getting ready that morning, our husbands and Kenny hatched a plan with the kind folks at Columbian Emeralds, Treco and NIcole to surprise me with another gift at our wedding dinner. Again, I was overwhelmed by the day and the gift but even more so by the true kindness and caring extended to us by everyone there. I’ve never had a better birthday celebration! We have visited SEB many, many times and we love the location, the more relaxed vibe and overall beauty of the property. Honestly, though, it is the true kindness of the people who work tirelessly here that make it so very special to us. This trip, with the milestone birthday celebration and RTK, really emphasized how important that is to a positive experience at a resort location such as this. I really believe that dedication to simply being kind comes from the top man himself, Jeremy Mutton. His team members truly respect him and his efforts and they follow his example. That is why we will continue to visit and highly recommend this property. Read less

This place is great! You rarely see people around because The lot is really large and spread out. Each restaurant is not too busy except French restaurant. Food is the best compare with other Sandals. We stop going to Sandals because of the food standard are not good. This time we decided to choose Sandals is because that Is the best accommodation at Emerald Bay. We are glad Sandals did not disappoint us. We have to thank our Butlers: Marcelino, Ailyn and Roubin. Each one of them definitely made my husband and I felt we Were in good hands. They delivered everything we request them! Thank you so much!😁 There is one issue with this location which is “seaweed”. Majority of the ocean were cover with seaweed, so you can not swim in the ocean. I guess when God close a door, will Open a window.... thank God, on both end of the bay, water are clean and calm, so we still have opportunities to swim in the ocean!🐟 One more thing, the golf course was great! Specially the back 9 holes. You can see the aqua blue ocean while you played golf! Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating 5 stars? Pure comedy. Here is your honest guide and warning

We checked out of this resort on Sunday 1/12/20 and we typically get end of vacation sadness, but this resort was so bad that we could not wait to leave. If you are well traveled and have stayed at true 5 star resorts across the country/world then the level of disappointment upon arrival at this dump would leave you empty inside considering the price tag per night. Let’s start with some background info that we learned, which I think is important as the property looks nice in pictures, but as soon as you arrive, you quickly learn that the pictures tell a great lie. The property was originally a Four Seasons, which is why it pictures extremely well when you add filters. We’ve stayed at several Four Seasons in other locations, so I imagine at one point in time that this resort was excellent under Four Seasons management. But, we learned that the owner of the Four Seasons sadly got cancer and his wife decided to sell the resort to Sandals in 2009. The Four Seasons was closed for a year and received zero upkeep during that time. Sandals then opened the resort under Sandals management sometime in 2010. Again, the grounds of the resort look very nice in pictures, but when you arrive, you immediately see how dated every single building in this resort has become due to zero upkeep by Sandals. Slumlord is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about this hotel. It is just beyond poorly managed. Upon arrival, we were brought into a building where they begin the check in process. The building is next to the front lobby, smells of mold, and is extremely dated with no air conditioning. We were greeted by a woman who you’d expect to be super nice and hospitable, but she was extremely “fake nice” and gave us a sense that she was annoyed she had to check us in. Keep in mind, we just arrived, we are in the best of spirits, super happy and friendly, so there is no reason for her to feel annoyed besides that being her personality. We usually could care less about this type of stuff, but it just added to the whole experience once we thought back on everything. After a long day traveling, we happily got into a room within 30 minutes of arrival. Super fast check in. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the smell of mold smacked us in the face immediately after opening the hotel room door. The hallway that led to the room smelled like trash and mold as well. My girlfriend is pregnant, so we asked to get switched to a different room. They were annoyed with our request, but accommodated us anyways. There were no rooms available at that moment, so we had to sit in the lobby and waste our vacation time waiting for a new room. Long story short, we were brought to not 1, but two more rooms, and those also reeked of mold. Keep in mind, this is our first day, we wanted to enjoy the sun, but had to spend 3 hours of our vacation waiting around and viewing disgusting moldy rooms. At this point, we were getting angry, but wanted to just make the best of it and settled on room 1101, which had the least moldy smell of the three moldy rooms. We spoke with other hotel guests and they shared that their rooms also smelled like mold. The cherry on top of the mold smell is that the rooms are incredibly dated. Super old furniture, horrendously uncomfortable bed that feels like you’re sleeping on concrete, and it was dirty! (sand in bed). The tiles on the floor definitely were not cleaned for months because the bottom of our feet would be black after walking on our hotel room floor with bare feet. We wore sandals IN our hotel room. The hotel is super old, extremely dated, and not maintained to a high standard for a $700/night hotel. Do not believe the story that the pictures online portray. This is warning #1. Onto the food (warning #2): We were worried about the food before arrival because all inclusive hotel food is usually not good. But, we thought “this place is $700/night, it has to be gourmet.” We were so wrong. If you’ve stayed at Ritz, Four Seasons, The W etc, you’re used to good food. If you’ve stayed at those places, which are truly 5 star, you have a level of expectation due to the high price you paid. Do not expect that at Sandals. The food is college cafeteria grade at best. The best food we had was at the “fancy French restaurant,” and I put that in quotes because it’s just “fancy” for this hotel. It’s not actually fancy. The restaurant has super old carpet, has a musty smell, and has no air conditioning. Yes, no air conditioning in a “5 star resort” in the Bahamas. Out of all the places we ate, the food here was at least edible and seemed clean. It was not gourmet by any means, but it was edible. Additionally, we both had stomach troubles twice during our 4 day stay, which was likely from the breakfast/lunch buffet (disgusting). People who have reviewed that the food is good here, all I can say is this, and I don’t want to sound mean, it’s just a fact, that they just have not traveled and stayed at real 5 star hotels. Also, a lot of people are drinking and getting hammered all day, so when they eat, they don't realize how bad the food is. We also learned that Sandals is like a cult and the loyal Sandals members will fight tooth and nail claiming the resorts are amazing, my guess is that those people may be well traveled, but just have never stayed anywhere but Sandals and don’t know any better. This is a bold statement, but I would have preferred eating at my college cafeteria than eating at this Sandals resort. Every food hall and restaurant just did not feel clean, had a musty moldy smell, and the food just is not good. Let’s talk about the staff (Warning #3): The employees at this hotel completely lack the hospitality and most gave you the sense that they were just all around annoyed to have to deal with you. Other guests we spoke with shared our same sentiment. We did have a good experience with Joey and Nathan who I hired to take maternity pictures of my pregnant girlfriend and I and who I also planned out my surprise engagement proposal with. Also involved was Shalise who was the on site engagement/wedding planner. They were all great. Speaking of the surprise engagement proposal, there is a woman there who you go see to make reservations for the restaurants and she almost blew up my entire surprise by telling my girlfriend that “the wedding planner scheduled your dinner reservation already” and she said this to her the day before I even proposed! I almost lost my mind. Luckily for me that our stay had been such a cluster that my girlfriend just thought she made a mistake. Research Exuma hospitality thought and you'll be interested in what you find. To validate everything I’ve written above and so you don’t think I’m some angry guest going on a tirade, we decided to leave the Sandals resort in search of edible food and to just get away, so we went to the neighboring hotel, which is the Grand Isle Resort. It is just a short walk on the beach. Our server, unlike any of the servers at Sandals, was extremely welcoming and hospitable. It was a breath of fresh air. After some minor chit chat, she told us that she was a butler at Sandals for several years. When we asked her why she left and works at Grand Isle now, she said verbatim that every time she got a new guest, they would complain and be angry about their room smelling like mold. They would complain about the food. They would yell at her like it was her fault. She said she felt bad for them because she agreed with everything they were mad about, but she kept getting yelled at and couldn’t take it anymore. When we asked her how the resort has a 5 star rating on trip advisor, she said that the bulk of the guests who stay there just don’t know what a real 5 star resort is. They are there for their honey moon or a special occasion, but just have not traveled a lot. This was all interesting to learn, but saddening because we felt duped by the 5,000+ reviews showing a 4.5 star rating. I’m sure Sandals will respond to this review somehow claiming their innocence and that the resort is great, but just trust me on this, $700/night buys you a far superior hotel elsewhere. If I was to put a price tag on this hotel, I would say $250/night, which is what I paid for all inclusive hotels during spring break in college. I didn’t care that the food was bad back then or if the hotel is falling apart as I was drinking the whole time, which is the only way possible that you can enjoy any of the food or your time at this Sandals resort. Warning #4. Everything I wrote above is 100% factual and true. Trust me on this, do not stay at this falling apart, moldy/trash smelling, dog food hotel. Unless you want to pay $700/night for what should be a 2 star hotel, do not stay here. Grand Isle next door is far superior and has decent food. Stay there or just do day trips to Exuma. You have been warned. Read less
