Hotel Saratoga

Havana, Cuba

The hotel

In the thick of it all, this historic Havana hotel sits mere metres from The Capitol building, with incredible views over its much-photographed dome from the rooftop’s pool, cocktail, and dining terrace. It’s not just the location that draws crowds to Hotel Saratoga (although, being just 200m from Gran Teatro de la Habana and the Partagas Cigar Factory, and 2km from the Malecón, its address is a big bonus), the hotel also entices with the traditional touches in its rooms, the seductive décor of its Anacaona restaurant, the grandeur of social spaces like Bar Mezzanine, and the bay and city views from its rooftop terrace.

Charming old hotel in a great location with the most annoying wifi in the world. Gorgeous Art Deco decor. Whilst our room was spacious and offered a great view of progress on the Parliament building and surrounding areas for the 500 birthday celebrations the hallways smelt dank and mouldy. The hot water took 15 mins to be hot enough to shower which was a terrible waste of water. Breakfast was good but the rest of the food was indifferent. Staff were accommodating for the most part although there was a bit of a problem understanding our accent. Whilst it was convenient having a travel agent in the building it meant that staff offered little or no information. Our first guide through the travel agent ripped us off although this was rectified. The map provided was frankly useless. If you want to ride in an old convertible best to do so early morning otherwise it is a long time to be in the sun. The rooftop pool bar was a great place to cool off in the afternoons or for a nightcap with a great view of the city. The biggest annoyance was the wifi. 12 numbers as a username and another 12 as a login and it was constantly dropping out. Read less

Unfortunately, I am staying at the Saratoga as I write. First contact with the venue was through a light ripoff concerning the parking. The guy who took my money was introduced to me by the bell boy. When I checked with the front desk if 'the price was right' - the guy wanted cash in advance - They pretended they didn't know anything about parking and parking fees (!!!) and the receptionist, the manager, the bell boy and the parking guy started a sketchy comedy to cover up the misdeed. The hotel boasts 5 stars but service standard is low. WiFi keeps disconnecting and they have these superlong numbers to reenter every five minutes. 'sorry I can't help'. The hotel corridors smell of mould and furniture is basic and run down. Walking in old havana I counted a lot of real charming hotels, in enchanting corners that are worth a try. Maybe they don't sport 5 stars, But at least they don't pretend to be what they aren't. Read less

Our experience at the Saratoga Hotel was great, and especially I would like to thank the concierge Janio Machado who gave us incredibly helpful tips that allowed us to get the most out of our two-day stay in Havana. He was absolutely exceptional!

As I have said to everyone, you must reset your preconceptions of the hotel star system if you are travelling in Cuba, but Hotel Saratoga is the closest to what would be considered a 5 star hotel anywhere else in the world and was by far the best of the 4 hotels I have stayed at in my time in Cuba. The service from the staff on the door, the bar on the mezzanine, the rooftop bar, the cleaning staff and the management when we had to deal with them could not have been better. The reception checking in and out was a bit unwelcoming and the restaurant staff were fairly inattentive and we also experienced a real language barrier in the restaurant. The bar in the mezzanine is stunning, as is the bar on the roof top. The views of the city are unmatched, and it was nice to be able to hear the 9 o’clock cannon while having a cocktail on the roof in the shadow of the Capitolo. The room was beautifully appointed with everything you could need. We had quite a lengthy power cut after a storm here, but that was out with the hotel’s control, but going without air conditioning in Cuba for any length of time is hard work. We encountered one very serious issue inside the hotel during our stay, but my wife and I were completely satisfied by how it was handled and how we were looked after by management. We would definitely return to Hotel Saratoga and recommend it is the first hotel people travelling to Havana should try to book. Read less

Hard to review this boutique hotel properly given the economic hardships in Cuba and more recent sanctions impacting tourism in Havana. It is certainly a calibre above other hotels and for Havana this is 5*. You will need to reset your expectations before arriving: You only have to go to a local supermarket to see the shelves are not well stocked so come fully prepared for your holiday as luxuries will be hard to get affordably. Small things could be improved like more friendly front of house staff in places, door men that actually get the door for you instead of consistently standing in the way and checking that all rooms have products that are not broken (we had a ironing board replaced with no problems). The reality is you may have powercuts but overall the hotel is lovely and the rooftop area is fantastic overlooking Capitol. The breakfast is good with options made to order (eggs, pancakes and the like) and the bar on the ground floor is also beautiful. It may not be like the 5* you have come to expect elsewhere, but it’s definitely one of the best options you’ll have in Havana for luxury. Read less
