Hotel Saratoga

Havana, Cuba

The hotel

In the thick of it all, this historic Havana hotel sits mere metres from The Capitol building, with incredible views over its much-photographed dome from the rooftop’s pool, cocktail, and dining terrace. It’s not just the location that draws crowds to Hotel Saratoga (although, being just 200m from Gran Teatro de la Habana and the Partagas Cigar Factory, and 2km from the Malecón, its address is a big bonus), the hotel also entices with the traditional touches in its rooms, the seductive décor of its Anacaona restaurant, the grandeur of social spaces like Bar Mezzanine, and the bay and city views from its rooftop terrace.

We really enjoy the Cuban music and piano, and the excellent performance of the vocalist who has a great voice and also can sign different music styles such as balada, bolero, and traditional Cuban music! If you add on top the cocktails of the Mezzanine Bar, then you get a full experience. The Hotel staff was always kind and smiling. Congratulations to all the Staff. I recommend anyone to stop by Hotel Saratoga, Me and my family found it very centric and convenient to enjoy a week in Havana. The night shows with live music are spectacular and I recommend it to everyone and other friends recommended it to us. Read less

Overall our stay was good, service atitude acceptable (but not great) and food was okay (knowing you are in Cuba...). The worst point was the moisture in our room and also on corridors. It was difficult to breathe! Room 206. The hotel needs a facelift, it’s dated in most areas.

Staff are generally not very friendly. We were in a deluxe patio on the second floor. I would recommend a floor higher than third as internal lower floor rooms look out over the bar area and we could smell the smoke wafting into our room. There’s a smell of damp in the rooms and they have a humidity problem which is very common in Cuba. However the room was lovely and big and comfortable. They do snacks and have a restaurant and the food wasn’t bad when comparing to general Cuban food which isn’t very good at all. Breakfast food quality is quite good but the staff are slow and dishes can be empty for a while. I would recommend the hotel because the others aren’t so good. You may get better if you pay more but we paid £200 a night which is still a lot. Read less

In a recent family trip to Cuba we stayed in this hotel 2 out of 10 nights. This hotel is not on the list of banned hotels by U.S department of state, which means it is not owned by the Cuban government and therefore by staying here you are not contributing to that government. This is a restriction for U.S citizens. Citizens of European countries and others do not have this restriction. The hotel is old and it shows. The rooms are not very clean. The hot shower in the bathroom does not exist. In fact there is a sign on every hot water faucet saying the maximum temperature is 55C or 122F. That is not even lukewarm. In my first attempt to take a cold shower the handle to the glass door, which was broken, and was just hanging came loose. It was reported to the front desk. They removed the entire door instead of fixing the handle for the remainder of the time we stayed there. So then the warm shower was in a cold bathroom. There is a refrigerator in the room. Make sure you take a picture of the contents before and after to prove that you did not use the bottled water. The wifi is a joke. You'll receive a Uid and a Pswd per occupant. First of all it does not work in the room and can only be accessed in the lobby, but even then if you can connect it will be for a couple of minutes. The free breakfast is nice and it had the basics for an american breakfast. There is a rooftop pool and bar that has a very nice view of the city. But, part of it is blocked by this senseless wall that covers half of the view. If you do not have the restrictions to stay in other hotels, there are much better choices. At least that's what we found out by driving around and seeing them on the outside. The people in this hotel and just about everywhere else in Cuba are very nice, friendly and eager to help. We also stayed in Hotel Nacional for 5 nights and I am writing another review for that. Read less

The hotel staff is very kind and responsive, the rooms are big enough (we got suites towards the Capitol, so we had the view and fresh air, even though loud when windows are opened (which you would expect in the center of a capital) but well isolated when closed), rooms have all needed amenities, mineral water is supplied without additional charge on a daily basis (big bottle for the bathroom, 2 small bottles for the bedroom), location perfect for exploring Havana. The rooms did not seem well cleaned (moved the bed side drawer to use the switch and it revealed a lot of dust), same was valid for the corners of the room, the floor of the shower cabin did not seem well cleaned too. Breakfast is fine for Cuban standards. In total - the cost:quality ratio is wrong here (approx. €350/room/night), especially compared to international standards. If the maintenance/cleaning was improved (guess it requires some stricter quality control as applied by international chains), the hotel would be just perfect. The rooms are humid (and smell accordingly), the wardrobe cannot be used due to bad smell, but this is not unusual for tropical properties. Read less
