Hotel Saratoga

Havana, Cuba

The hotel

In the thick of it all, this historic Havana hotel sits mere metres from The Capitol building, with incredible views over its much-photographed dome from the rooftop’s pool, cocktail, and dining terrace. It’s not just the location that draws crowds to Hotel Saratoga (although, being just 200m from Gran Teatro de la Habana and the Partagas Cigar Factory, and 2km from the Malecón, its address is a big bonus), the hotel also entices with the traditional touches in its rooms, the seductive décor of its Anacaona restaurant, the grandeur of social spaces like Bar Mezzanine, and the bay and city views from its rooftop terrace.

This is a beautiful, historic hotel in Central Old Town Havana. It is located about a block or two from the Capital building and walkable to a lot of the things to see. Plenty of restaurants nearby and a beautiful outdoor park about three blocks from the hotel to the right. Other things like the revolution circle will require a cab ride. One issue, I anticipated a little bit more for the price. We paid $460 a night which after taxes came out to $632 which I don't think was necessarily worth it. There is another property two blocks down from this one that is somewhat cheaper and which looked from the outside to be just as nice. The hotel rooms were very large, separate sitting area, large bathroom with every possible amenity, tub and shower. Water pressure isn't the best but it's not bad. The staff are very, very friendly and helpful. It's a 30 CUC ride to the airport (about 1/2 hour). As a tip, change your money at the hotel, not the airport. The airport takes 10 percent plus gives a bad exchange rate and the lines are horrendous. If you need to change some at the airport, everyone stops at the first change area where you come out of customs. Instead, there is an elevator there, take that to the second floor and there are more change areas up there. You will need 30 CUC and tip to get to town, then exchange at the hotel. I would come back and stay again here, and in fairness, it was a last minute booking over Easter weekend. Also, most hotels require a minimum three day advance notice that you are booking a reservation. One nice thing, this hotel took credit cards. NEARLY EVERYTHING IN HAVANA IS PAID IN CASH AND CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS FROM THE US WILL NOT WORK THERE. Make sure you get plenty of cash out stateside as you cannot access cash even though you are 100 miles from the States. Read less

The Hotel is in the centre of Havana and an easy walk from Old Havana and other attractions. The staff are friendly and the rooms are of a high standard. There is a roof top pool with fantastic views. Services such as internet and wifi work well.

Wonderful hotel with good amenities including a rooftop pool and bar. Enjoyed sitting and watching the city life below while sipping a Margarita. Rooms are nice and quiet although our room faced the inside courtyard bar below so there was little privacy to open the curtains. Amazing breakfast with a selection of everything you might want. We came here with high expectations because of certain famous people previously staying here and unfortunately, we were let down. I remember overhearing a man on a table close to ours complaining about his food which I hopefully brushed off as him being rude but we soon found to have a similar experience. My boyfriend and I both ordered steak which came the first came burnt and then the second time raw.... If I were to make a fair comment, then I would also say that we did try steak again in another Cuban restaurant and it didn't go so well either... Read less

Central location so could walk to many of the places and attractions we wanted to see. Capitol building was right across the street. Internet worked but you had to be at a spot in the room closer to the central courtyard restaurant for it to stay on and if you got kicked off a lengthy user name and password was required which was annoying. Would recommend it for a stay in Havana. Read less
