Round Hill

Montego Bay, Jamaica

The hotel

Undoubtedly one of the most sought after hotels in the Caribbean, Round Hill has been a long-standing Jamaican icon since its opening in 1953. A former pineapple plantation on the outskirts of Montego Bay, what is it about Round Hill that makes it such a magnet? Round Hill is where Jacqueline and JFK spent their honeymoon, where Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the Sound of Music, where Hitchcock got sunburned and where Noel Coward, if egged on enough, would sing for the guests. After 50 years, Round Hill has a million stories to tell. Today, this elegant beachfront resort offers the same blend of qualities that has always pulled the famous names and faces; namely a well-preserved slice of old Jamaica and tremendous hospitality. You still enjoy the plantation’s stylish architecture and a predictably colonial pace of life, but with the added pull of an oceanfront spa, an exceptional family program and refurbished hotel rooms designed for beach living by Ralph Lauren, (perhaps whilst visiting his own villa at Round Hill). The ocean side restaurant perfectly blends the hotel’s historic pedigree with its new energy, classic décor with an open kitchen and wood-fired grill.

While most of the staff are lovely there are those, especially the older, entitled individuals who are less than friendly. There’s also a complete disconnect between all departments which obviously starts from the executive down. We spent a lot of time working with reservations to secure the best villa for our Family of two adults and three children. On arrival the hotel tried to palm us off with a lessor villa with a shared pool instead of the one we booked, which was private with our own pool and separate guest villa, for our older daughter, about to turn 13 during our stay. We stood our ground and eventually managed to get into the villa we had booked despite the hotels best efforts to move us. Because we have two very young children, eating at 7:30pm was not an option for us so we relied on room service which on every occasion, bar one, was up to an hour or two hours thirty minutes late. Nobody ever bothered to apologize or work with us to make sure this didn’t happen, when we gave up and went to the restaurant are meal for the kids, pizza and pasta, took, on one occasion, an hour and a half to arrive. The worst of it was was yet to come, as an avid tennis player I had booked, well in advance, tennis every day on the clay courts. I had also asked for a coach who was young, energetic and could give me a good workout. I was assured that this had all been arranged weeks before we arrived. On arrival for my first session I was introduced to my coach who was far from young, could barely hit the ball and stood still. I immediately asked for another coach, while doing my best not to offend anyone. I was then given a new coach who could play. On the third session I was fifteen minutes into my game when another guest started screaming and shouting on the edge of the court complaining that the coach teaching her kids was an old man who just stood still, sounds familiar. She then reminded the head coach that he would be better served if he were to consider the villa owners first before anyone else. It was then that the head coach took my coach away, 15 minutes into my session, and give him to this women. As you can imagine I was dumbfounded as to how anyone would think that this was a smart thing to do. Obviously I complained to the head coach who then told me my session was over and to leave the court. I refused and stood my ground demanding the coach return and finish the session, it was at this point that the head coach threatened to “mash my face” if I didn’t leave. This is a first for me at a hotel having said that, I invited him to take his best shot. We’ve been coming to round hill for many years however, never again. The old dudes running the tennis courts need firing, along with some other old dudes who simply collect a salary and resent the idea of service. RoundHill is a lovely place partially filled with great people who are full of smiles and take pride in their work. It’s the few, past their sell by date individuals, bringing the place down. People at this resort dress much better than at other places, and it is refreshing! Our Villa (22) was immaculate and beautiful. Dinner was great every night, with a varied menu and top notch entertainment. The boys loved the beach buffet (grilled lobster!). One of my sons and I did a tubing excursion on the Great River and really enjoyed it. The service at Round Hill is top notch! It's expensive, but you get what you pay for. We will be back as soon as possible! Read less

A beautiful spot with such an amazing vibe. Staff is so welcoming and hospitable. From the minute you arrive, greeted by Kingsley who’s an icon to this place with his Turquoise suit and his bright white smile and charm. Food is delicious and Chef Martin outdoes himself... David the grounds supervisor ensures Chef has as much organic produce as possible...he has a beautiful organic garden onsite. Villas are charming and lovely... if you stay in Villa 20, Carmen and staff are a real treat... from making you breakfast to tending to all your needs... she’s been there for 40+ years!!! If you bring a wedding or group... Linda, Yanique and Shanice along with rest of the team ensure you have a memorable stay... they go above and beyond what’s expected... with such a nice calm way about them... but very focused on details. All of our guests loved their stay here and all didn’t want to leave and will be back! I have to say that this hotel knows how to take care of their staff which shows with all that have been here for so many decades... impressive!!! I can’t say enough... but I will be back... Read less

Just spent two glorious weeks at Round Hill.. better than ever and my batteries are fully charged by the love and the warnth of Jamaicans as well as by the fresh clean air, the sun the sea and all the fresh food. I am indeed blessed to have had this vitamin shot and to have left behind a treacherous winter. This was much better than any flu shot!
