The hotel

All the customary Caribbean luxuries come as standard here: squeaky soft white sands, impossibly blue sea, tropical gardens, and Jamaican entertainment. But Sunscape Cove has a few extra tricks up its short summery sleeves. Things like its setting, on a private peninsula wrapped by Montego Bay Marine Park, with its protected swimming spots and snorkelling. Promising ‘Unlimited-Fun®’ and an automatic ‘Sun Club’ upgrade, you get endless land and water activities, unlimited drinks, and 24-hour dining, all completely complimentary, and covered by eight eateries, seven bars and room service. You even get access-all-areas at Sunscape Splash next door, where pleasures include the incredible Pirate’s Paradise Waterpark. In fact, little VIPs are well-catered for at Sunscape Cove, with a science, nature and exploration themed Explorer’s Club, teens’ Core Zone, and in-room cartoons, milk and cookies all included.

We ended up having a good time (we were in the Caribbean with friends) but wouldn’t choose Sunscape Cove in the future. All of us are just regular people, no high maintenance nonsense. All have stayed at all-inclusives, done cruise ships, VRBO’s and the like. Our expectations for Sunscape cove were based on those previous experiences and accommodations as well as Sunscape Cove marketing and advertising. The first impression in the lobby was as expected. Friendly and helpful staff, comfortable seating, pleasant atmosphere, etc. Upon arrival to our room is when I acknowledged this might not be quite up to par with what previous experiences and property marketing led us to expect. The room was sparse, furniture old and worn. The “upgraded mini-bar” advertised on the property website was a little mini fridge near the floor containing two small bottles of water, one Red Stripe beer, one small Coca Cola, one small orange Fanta, and one box of fruit flavor beverage (Upgraded from what?). The entry door handle was loose, bathroom door handle loose, rear sliding door would stick, jump the track...the room needed maintenance. First lunch was at the seaside grill where they were serving burgers, dogs and had a jerk chicken stand. It again became apparent this property operates a little different. The employee taking meal orders said as little as possible (maybe she worked a double shift, stayed up all night, I dunno). We placed our orders. As food came up to be served, she gave it to employees who came out of the back while we waited. Employees need to eat too but let’s be more discreet. I just forked over a bunch of money to be here and and I’m effectively standing in line for lunch with the crew. The burger was bland. The soft drink machine was old. Not classic old, broken, worn out old. About half the dispensers were not hooked up or just didn’t work. We never went back to this grill. The buffet would be my personal challenge to fix. Food stations where staff is preparing food such as the omelette station are okay. Most everything else falls short of a cruise ship buffet. Watery scrambled eggs, “steamed” pancakes and french toast from being held in the container on the serving line. Many times there were no available plates or cups, hash browns gone, bacon gone, etc. Buffet staffing was interesting. Some personable, some not so much. Watched a staff member push past a couple of guests with a cart of dishes. Not in a particular hurry, the guests were simply in her way. Floor staff at the buffet looked completely unorganized like none of them had a particular task. Some were genuinely trying and some walked around like they were not sure what to do. Maid service in the room was good but training is needed. Standing on the beach in front of Sunscape Splash, I looked up at the building. A maid was sweeping an upper balcony sending whatever debris that needed to be swept out into the breeze above guests. Staff at Kellys Watersports were good people all the way around. Helpful, friendly, appeared to enjoy working together. Two suggestions would be to refresh the kayak fleet or at least replace missing back rests. Snorkeling equipment that is generally available for casual use at most venues was only available if you went out on one of their boats. In general, they are pretty good. Most of the bartenders were at work and it was a job. Ricky is the lobby bartender. He could give the rest a lesson on making drinks, customer service and communicating with guests. We decided to stay at the property the last day of our stay. We noticed the number of people at the pool and on the beaches was noticeably larger than any previous day. No lounges available anywhere. One person in our party struck up a conversation with a few people while trying to find available lounges. Turns out they were from a cruise ship and came in to enjoy free drinks meant for guests and hang out at the resort. There are plenty of guards employed at the property but somehow people were getting in who were not guests of the property consuming food and drink and using amenities. Aside from the inconvenience to registered guests and direct costs/loss to the property from consumed food and drink, the insurance liability has to be substantial. Right now, the most simple description of the property to convey to someone what to expect would be a summer camp for kids. Members of our party agree the property has the potential to be what it is marketed to be. There are some capital expenditures that need to happen but the biggest favor ownership could do for themselves is to get involved, replace management and get staff trained and organized. Human assets will make or break an enterprise and its evident this staff has been ignored for a while. Read less

This resort was great for our family to enjoy in sunny Jamaica. We had a 1 and 5 year old along so it was important that they had things to do for our kids. They certainly enjoyed themselves. Resort didn’t have the best food we have ever had at a resort, but we mainly went for the swimming. My wife enjoyed the buffet.

Had a great experience at Sunscape Cove. Our butler, Renees, was just amazing. She was kind and made sure we had everything we needed. My husband has dubbed her his second Mom. Sister's wedding was rained out but this team did their best to work it out and still make their day magical. We'll be back soon!
