Sunscape Cove Montego Bay

Montego Bay, Jamaica

The hotel

All the customary Caribbean luxuries come as standard here: squeaky soft white sands, impossibly blue sea, tropical gardens, and Jamaican entertainment. But Sunscape Cove has a few extra tricks up its short summery sleeves. Things like its setting, on a private peninsula wrapped by Montego Bay Marine Park, with its protected swimming spots and snorkelling. Promising ‘Unlimited-Fun®’ and an automatic ‘Sun Club’ upgrade, you get endless land and water activities, unlimited drinks, and 24-hour dining, all completely complimentary, and covered by eight eateries, seven bars and room service. You even get access-all-areas at Sunscape Splash next door, where pleasures include the incredible Pirate’s Paradise Waterpark. In fact, little VIPs are well-catered for at Sunscape Cove, with a science, nature and exploration themed Explorer’s Club, teens’ Core Zone, and in-room cartoons, milk and cookies all included.

So you saw pretty photos? did you see the photos of all the plastic & broken chairs in this property? only the 2 story part of this motel is rehabed and rooms were clean and nice- NOT the tower- We stayed here Feb 2019- very very smal beach area with broken chairs- FOOD is one always covered with bugs, short in food items and selections, we got sick so many times! entairtainment by high schoold and non professional which beleived rubbing their behinds together is an ACT. The motel area often got dumped by strengers from ships and locals for "all you can eat buffet" and we lost items on the beach and often got confronted by strangers on the Beach- Manasgment staff did not notify guest when they know that the ocean was taken over by the Jelly Fish who sting guest all over their body and did nothing about it (no warning by the hotel, no signes even we told them of it). YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU GO HERE AND OR TO THEIR OTHER TWO PROPERTIES IN MONTEGO BAY UNDER THE SAME managment whom has changed the property name three times so far in the last few years ! should this tell you something? The Cove lobby is so underwhelming compared to the Splash side - so when pulling up be prepared. There was some miss-communication with our check in so after waiting a few hours the staff admitted that one staff member went home and didn't confirm with other staff that we were waiting to check it. We got our beachfront room after 3 hours of arriving. Room was great - we had 3170 and I would suggest that room. The location was perfect, the room was comfortable and fully renovated. It was cleaned daily, fridge fully stocked but we were lacking room towels the first 2 days but was fine after that. Beach was okay the first 2 days but then it poured rain and the beach turned into black, muddy, dirt waves.. The beach here is not a nice soft sand with clear water even on its nicest day - if you are a beach person and this is number one for you, you will be disappointed. Beach/pool chairs are in need of repair/replacement. Pool was great, a little low on water, but the water park the kids LOVED. My kids are 8 and 6 and can both swim and I just let them go on both the activity pool (they loved the zumba) and the water park/ lazy river. They honestly had a blast and it was the best part of the trip being able to watch them have so much fun and not be behind them all the time. Food was just okay... I agree that it is the same thing pretty much everyday but we always found something to eat - we certainly didnt over eat. The kids loved the room service pizza, the bacon and pancakes in the morning, burgers and nacho with cheese for lunch and chicken nuggets and fries for dinner.. we had the same thing almost every day - twice they had ackee and saltfish, a few days some rundown, a few days curry goat (best meal of the trip). We went to a few restaurants and were not impressed. I think the food is where they have the most improvement to do. Asian restaurant took 2.5 hours! Bars were okay, always had good sugary drinks of the day, alcohol was weak but who needs to get wasted anyways! They were always out of something, bananas for drinks, sparkling wine, slushies for kids were not yet frozen etc. Kids enjoyed the swings, mini put, bean bag toss, chess etc. when they were tired of swimming, they did a few of the daytime activities, the painting for 5$ was the best bring home memory. They got to pick jewels and someone made a necklace which was cool too, they had vendors in the resort a few days which was good if you didnt want to go off the resort. Entertainment was just okay - sub-par to other resorts but honestly once youve been to resorts there is only so many times I can watch the entertainment at night. They had movies on the beach at night, kids came back with tons of bites so bring spray and use it a lot, kids did a fashion show which was cute, the best part was when they had the mechanical bull, kids loved that, and even though they missed the bouncy castle they enjoyed the cotton candy. Overall watching my kids have a blast and the room that we had was the best part of this trip. The kids don't see the room for improvement how we see it so they just enjoy themselves. The food and the beach are below par. Would I recommend this resort? Most likely not. Certainly not to anyone that doesn't have children between 4-12 and even then it would have to be at a really good price. Read less

He was so kind, got us towels when there were none to be found, had my sister’s room decorated for a birthday surprise, and answered our 7 million questions. Best concierge ever! The reason for my three star rating? Often there were no towels (bath or beach), and we had quite an extensive wait for just about everything. Definitely not the fault of the staff. They were always apologetic and tried to make the best of it for us. Read less

Just got back from the Sunscape Cove. Having not paid for this resort (gifted by the matriarch of a family of 11 - in 5 rooms) I have to say I might be a little generous in the review - so depending on what you paid... this resort is not so bad. Reception at the Cove is tiny with only two desks in the bar area to receive you. Check in took a while as only one person was on staff and the correct rooms were not available. We only got 2 of the 5 rooms correct (both older rooms), the 3 refurbished rooms should have been doubles and ended up being a king, leaving 3 adults in a king bed and 2 tweens sleeping each with a parent in the other two kings. After some juggling within our group we were able to work it out as not much help from staff the next day. The Splash reception is much larger and nicer. Cove has very dated and worn furniture which is odd as it is the more expensive portion of the hotel. The rooms are a combination of old and referbished. The old ones are very tired and the new ones are already showing some wear. To sumerize: THE BAD: missing or broken hair dryers, missing coffee mugs, some had slippers - some did not, some had extra pillows and blankets - some did not, only one room had full towel set and only received a towel change once during the week, broken fridge that was never replaced, the older rooms had tubs with shower heads that were tiny and clogged so very little water spray and the new ones had a leaking handheld hoses. The hot water was lacking from 5-7 pm, so shower early. THE GOOD: beds were comfortable, ac seemed good for all, rooms were clean enough (though one room had to be recleaned upon arrival). The beach is very small and not very nice. The majority of the water is weeds growing on the bottom (not just floating in on the tide) or dead coral. Very little was sand but the water is very calm. Very few chairs to be had on the beach and very little shade. It is also blocked on both sides of the hotel so not much for beach combing. We also heard quite a few people were stung by jellyfish - no fault of the hotel ofcourse. The pools are nice and winding with the star for the kids being the splash play area. The cove does not have its own pool or beach - so no upgrade here either. The pools are showing their age with missing tiles but in all they were very clean. Again, not enough chairs to go around and alot were dirty and broken. We were always able to find chairs by the adult pool as it was the farthest and most guests were famlies. Never enough for our big group but usually 4-7 chairs we could pull together from that area. There are NEVER any towels. You have to stake out the towel hut on the first day and do not return yours until you have a new one in hand. We ended up using the same towels for the whole week which was just easier. Amenities were average to poor. Do not play mini golf without rubber gloves or bacterial spray. Putters are just gross. No SUPS but kayaks were fun. They have giant chessboards and other games, along with ping pong and pool tables but not a lot and old. The casino is tiny and dank. I think the Splash park is the draw. The grounds are smaller which is good and well laid out and seemed to be well taken care of if not overly pretty. The food is actually pretty good. Cove has its own two restaurants, so the sit down breakfast was always very good in the morning. The shared buffet is big enough - i've certainly seen larger - but in general was good. There is a sandwich and pasta station for lunch. What was impressive was the amount of Jamaican food everyday at every meal! Way to go. Jerk hut was yummy as well!. The a la cartes were give and take with some meals being better then others but definitely try them. No reservations so you just line up. The all day icecream place is soooo good! Had 2 everyday. Drinks similarily good, other than a lack of lemon, lime and banana at the bar - most drinks were good and mostly tasted the same no matter which bar you went to. They pour very heavy - so be ware! Tipping did make somewhat of a difference for being served - a bit faster - definitely better attitude. The staff was give and take. Some were very friendly while others seemed distant and remote like they would rather be somewhere else. Only say the "entertainment team" once during the day by the adult pool - cant say it they were anywhere else. Didnt see any shows though i heard they were pretty short but good. Excursions we did with an outside islander, but they have a shuttle to margarittaville and you can go to the hardrock next door and use the pool and beach - you just have to pay for food and drink. Hotel is pretty far from hip strip/shopping so cant really walk anywhere. Overall due to good food and drink (if not a lot of variety) and overall cleanliness I would give this resort a solid 3. If I had paid for this resort - especially as we were there over new year $$$ - I think I would probably be upset right now. Would I go back? In a heartbeat if it was free. Seriously think about it if it was a super cheap deal. But otherwise no - the crappy beach and endless hassels with expected convineces was not worth it. Read less

We stayed here and it is a nice place with good food and friendly staff. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the place. Our room is clean and in good working order, restaurants are good, staff is even better.
