Ocho Rios, Jamaica

The hotel

This premium All Inclusive adults-only resort offers a spectacular getaway in a wonderful location — only minutes from Jamaica’s biggest and best attractions. However, you may have trouble tearing yourself away from the facilities on-site, because they're pretty impressive too. As well as two epic pools to laze by, you’ve a huge selection of water sports to get stuck into, a well-equipped fitness centre and the gorgeous Radiant Spa, which will leave you feeling, well, radiant of course! The hip and happening Runaway Bay Golf Club is conveniently nearby and guests of the Jewel can take advantage of complimentary green fees — get that swinging arm of yours at the ready! There are multiple dining options too — feel the sand beneath your toes at Aquamarina Beach Bar & Grill (no shoes required) or treat yourself to fine dining at either Platinum, serving delicious dishes such as jerked chicken and seafood ceviche or Moonstone by Dominic for top-notch Italian fare. The accommodation itself is sumptuous — all rooms boast a magnificent 4-poster bed and a perpetually stocked mini-bar (soft drinks only). Upgrade to a room with an ocean view and you’ll think yourself in heaven — or at least the closest thing to it!

Stayed here January 13-20th, 2020. Booked with Air Canada vacations, and won't recommend that company. We originally booked for Jewel Paradise Cove, all confirmed and then we received an e-mail stating the hotel was over sold and we could either take Dunn's River, or get a credit. Not exactly how you want to start a vacation, but we accepted Dunn's River because we had stayed before in 2017. Just to start, I should say that we go to Jamaica almost every year and have stayed at many resorts there. To start, the airport shuttle to the hotel was great with only one other couple travelling with us and direct to hotel with no stops. The return trip to the airport was a nightmare. We were the first pick up and then the milk run began. It took us 2.5 hours to get to the airport after 4 hotel stops. Once there, we were lined up for Air Canada check in for another 2 hours. Had to run to our flight to make it, no duty free shopping for anyone on our bus. The airport is in complete chaos and obviously too small now for all the travellers and it was crazy busy. Rooms We were supposed to get a room upgrade because Air Canada moved us, this was not the case. We were in the Emerald Lanai section, no patio, no private balcony. Our room was really small, bathroom was tiny, air conditioning didn't work very well and our fridge didn't work at all. We told the front desk about out fridge several times and no one ever came to fix it. No hot water several times during our stay, a cold shower before dinner isn't a fun. Fixtures broken and multiple jobs of maintenance needed. Food and Restaurants- Another guest put it to us like this, "I paid for 5 resturants, not 1 or 2" On any given day, 2 or more restaurants would be closed. The first night we arrived was the beach party, food was terrible. The buffet restaurant was very limited with it's choices. The best thing eaten all week was the fried chicken and deserts. Who puts salsa and fried onions in their scambled eggs? don't fix it if it isn't broken. It seemed like what appeared on the buffet was left overs. No cheese selections or common items that appear on most buffets were found. The pasta station was "ok" the same 2 types of pasta and sauces day after day. The one lady was so slow at making your pasta, you waited 20 minutes, it was kind of crazy service. The Jade Samurai restaurant was basic with simple rice and meat cooked in soya sauce, no entertainment at all, except the other guests at our table and our waiter. Italian restaurant was good, had the lamb and had great service there. Pizza place and burger hut were the highlights of the resorts cuisine. Overall, the food was really disappointing. Grounds The grounds were pretty and well maintaned, however the pools were kind of dirty and very cold. The chairs were never arranged daily like other resorts do everynight. The beach is rocky, due to high winds and waves, and cannot be blamed on the staff Shout out to the Maurice (grounds keeper) he was very informative. Also enjoyed the cocount guys (ground keepers) who were fun to talk to and also very informative. Bars were all good, no problem getting service, we gave a tip for every drink we got, but we do that at home anyway. Problems at the resort can not be attributed to the staff, they are run off their feet. I do believe they are understaffed, no idea if they just can't get any, or there's a shortage. All the staff we met were very pleasant and cheery. Conclusion It would appear that this foreign owned resort chain is making a deliberate corporate decision undermining the quality, luxury and prestige of once well respected resorts. The Jewel chain was once intertwined with first class amenities and philosophy. Is overseeing the deterioration of once respected resorts simply for profit? or for other means. The attempt to curtail course maintenance allowing it to become rundown and close the Runaway Bay golf course and throw numerous locals out of work is an indicator of a corporate mindset not aligned with the country. The website doesnt even mention complimentary golf being offered. Another indicator of a direction at odds with its past. Again, we are sad to see the slow demise of a once fine resort and now Faded Glory . Read less

Jewel Dunn's River was truly a getaway! It reminded me why I prefer small intimate hotels. No hustle and bustle, food was good, couples spa treatment was on point! It was exactly what my husband and I needed! Looking forward to going back!

Our room No. 3412 - a great choice! We hope we come back and get n the same room! :) The front of the building has a garish pastel color scheme, inside guests are greeted with Italianate décor of archways, pillars and frescoed ceilings that soar above inlaid marble floors. The colonial influence is strong in the room decor. Carved wooden four poster beds and furnishings and tapestry patterned couches and rugs in the suites. With love, Una Read less

Hotel - ok. 3 stars nothing higher. During check in No info were provided about resort. Room - no hot water for over 18 hrs. Not so clean. Corners, lamp shades and mirror frame needs to be clean. Resort maintenance - horrible. You can see uncollected plates with food and cups all over the pool and beach till next day around 11am. Restaurant- I lost my appetite when I saw waitress collected used water glasses and set them up for next guests. Also I observed that if you are not tipping them from the beginning of your stay they will completely ignored you. Most restaurant are closed. They are open only in specific day. Food - really nothing special. Not many selection. Same for 5days. If you like a wine for your dinner it's not included. BTW many other alcohol are not included Beach - cover with small rocks. Not possible to walk without shoes. Same if you like to go to water. Besides, the beach is so short and narrow. Beach facility - they didn't collect lounge seats cushions so after rainy and windy night all seat are soaked and covered with sand and other dirt. Rain every night. Guests cleaned them up by themselves. Also beach beds, that sheets are never been changed. Good luck with beach towels. Read less
