Where to start!?! We've been coming here for over 25 years, but this is likely to be the last time. Management changed sometime in the past year or so, and take my word, it's not for the better. The facilities here in one word - AWFUL. We are one day in to a 5 day vacation. Even after our terrible experience checking in, We reluctantly decided to out the visit for a few reasons, not the least of which is because one room is paid for. That said, when we checked in yesterday are SOME of the problems: 1. The room wasn't ready until 1-1/2 hours after check-in time (16:30) 2. In our $400 / night room we found 1 cup, 1 towel, 1 robe, no stocked fridge, moldy/mildewed mirror, chipped coffee cups, dressers missing handles, broken AC and more. 3. We requested a new room and moved into our room at .... 22:30 There's more, but that's it for Day 1. We're discussing with management now, and will keep you posted. Pictures to come. This was our first trip to Jamaica as a family of 4. The Jewel Runaway Bay Resort did not disappoint in any way. The friendly and safe atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for and that is exactly what we were given. Being a smaller resort you were close to all the amenities and it was very quick to get to and from any part of the resort with no obstacles. We were able to get into every restaurant without trouble and the food was what we expected; you were able to eat as authentic as you wanted or the comfort foods from home, there was an amazing variety. The bars provided fantastic drinks for adults and children with minimal wait times. The activities were very organized and inclusive to all, starting at 10:00 am and continuing until 11:00 pm. The kids club and the tween/teen club was very welcoming and my children couldn't get enough of the activities that were planned for them (ages 11, 13), and the activities were all free for them. The entertainment staff was amazing, always available and upbeat. The entertainment they provided was different every night, it wasn't done on a grand scale, but it was perfect for us. The beach is amazing with the white sand, many chairs/shaded areas, and a beautiful coral reef to snorkel at. The cleanliness of the resort, rooms, beach was great and we never had an issue in this regard. Read less

We were skeptical when we read the reviews on this resort and all I can say is we spent 6 hours here and ran to another Jewel resort as quick as the reservation desk would help us! The air doesn’t work in the one area there is supposed to be air (the rooms). We were met with a lovely cloud of bug spray upon the walk to the second floor room we were staying in. Not only did we have to carry heavy bags up to the second floor but we also met a room that was dirty, not stocked and HOT! We are from Texas so we know what hot is. We also know that we will not spend our hard earned money on a place like this! Luckily the other resort saved our vacation and Jewel as a brand was very understanding allowing us to switch hotels before even night 1. The difference between the 2 family resorts are remarkable! You can tell which one the brand spends their money on and which is left to fail. Read less

The reason for my visit to Jewel Runaway Bay was that we were celebrating three milestone birthday's: my Sister's 40th birthday, my Mother's 70th birthday, and my Father's 80th birthday. For their birthday's, my parents wanted an intimate family celebration; so that is what we gave them- a vacation experience with all of their children and grand-children....a fully paid, all-inclusive trip with a family travel party of 19, kids, grand-kids, and spouses! We were looking for a property that would have something for everyone, with ages ranging from 4.5 years, to 80 years old. This was one of two all-inclusive resorts that had a 'kids-camp' for children just under the age of 5 years old, so we selected it. I'll start with the positive 'Pros': Cleanliness on the beach area & upkeep is fairly decent, good non-motorized activities available, lots of variety of activities for all ages: Teen & Tween activities and a kids camp all throughout the day giving parents a little break to enjoy a little fun-without-the kids-time, The Jade Samurai Restaurant (Japanese-Fusion) themed restaurant was excellent, The Jerk Hut had casual but fairly tasty food, and the Court Jester's Pizaria was a surprising great find (especially for dinner); the common grounds were also beautiful and well maintained with nice pathways, pools, and sitting areas, the water park with the lazy pools and multiple slides was a big hit with kids and teenagers, with walk up-eateries for those using the water-park, and it's a included in the price of your stay. Cons: Occurrence Issues: - Room keys were always malfunctioning; needed to walk to the front desk daily to have them re-set the keys so that you could get in your rooms (even when they were never near cell phones or credit cards. -This place has no elevators, only stairs to get up and down to and from the rooms, so not great for anyone having troubles navigating stairs. - Never had enough towels in the rooms for two people. -Whenever we asked for hand towels (as there were none in the room), none came until two days before the end of of our seven-day stay...lack of towels in general seems to be a big issue at this resort. - TERRIBLE Wi-Fi! Only works in the lobby (and then, only sometimes); wi-fi very poor or non-existent in the private rooms, and not in many of the other common areas of the hotel. This lack of basic Wi-Fi makes it extremely difficult to plan excursion events/dinners/ breakfast/ beach time meet up's, etc, with family and friends who are all staying at the resort in different rooms and areas. Aside from that, people need to be able to communicate with others in the outside world, which usually requires wi-fi connectivity! -Planed dinner events, for both our parents dinner party and my sisters's birthday party required us as a family to constantly remind and correct misplaced and/or forgotten information (message requested on the cake for my parents got screwed up, times given to restaurant for birthday day dinner for my sister misplaced by staff...). -Food: Coral Cafe (the main dining restaurant) is just okay, not great but is plentiful; --Customer service is hit-or-miss resort-wide. Rooms are out dated and not very well maintained with clogged drains, air conditioner units falling apart in some rooms, hallways in private sleeping areas were mostly un-kept and not very tidy due to constant sand, plates and cups that were left outside of rooms and not taken up by cleaning staff in a timely manner, all-inclusive drinks were tasteless & watered down (*to be fair, often the case at the mid-level price point). -Photographer: Wayne, nice personality but terrible photographer! Blurry images, eyes closed in many shots; he didn't bother to see if the images he took needed to be re-taken, very rushed job and certainly not worth the money! Overall, it was great fun for the kids who could have stayed at the water park all day, and my parents were just happy to spend a concentrated amount of time with their children and grand-children all in the same place, so they were very happy...which made us happy. But as an all-inclusive, this property REALLY needs to improvement in MANY areas! Not having working WiFi just so that you can easily communicate with others abroad and/or with family members and friends staying at the resort was very disappointing in this day and age for such a large property! For my money, I'd never go back, as there are far nicer properties to select from for the same mid-level price point that are far better maintained and have superior all-inclusive offerings there in Jamaica. Also, this property is far inferior to the Jewel-Adults Only Resort, where the quality of your stay is significantly improved, with better customer service, far superior daily food offerings, and rooms are much improved in their appearance and upkeep. The 'Jewel Branding' team needs to really reconsider removing itself from this Family-Friendly property, as it falls severely short of what is expected from the Jewel Brand. *Note To Management: Selective staff were stand out for good service & I wish to personally thank them: Breakfast: Dining Staff: Ms. Carleen, Ms. Nadia, Ms. Kerry-Ann (*supervisor), Ivan (Ivan made my dad the best smoothies, and every morning he put a huge smile on my father's face with his delicious smoothies), -Joel at the Grill was pleasant -Valentine (*Food and Beverage Manager- great customer service and mannerism; he took the time to speak to us and several others, trying to ensure that we had a pleasant food experience) Water activities: Mr. Hackett at the non- motorized sports/ wind sailing section made sailing SO much fun, and was so very accommodating!) **Nerresa ( our server at both the Platinum & Moonstone restaurant: amazing personality and fantastic customer service! She seemed to be one of only a few server at any of the restaurants that actually cared about making our two celebration occasions meaningful, helping us to navigate several mistakes made by others for prior birthday arrangements we had made....They could use 20 more like her at this property) -Lois, in photography department ( we were very displeased with the pictures taken by the assigned photographer, but she was so very polite and helpful, and displayed great patience with us as we selected the best out of a botched photography session). -'Trish' at the Jerk Hut ( had a little bit of a brisk attitude with the my young nieces at first; but then later in the week, as she warmed up to my other family members, she turned out to be terrific, displaying a much more pleasant attitude and great customer service! GOOD STUFF: The resort is beautiful. It offers a sandy beach and great pools. The waterpark lazy river was a favorite. The food is great too. A very nice selection was offered for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was buffet style, but also delicious. FRUSTRATING: It was DIRTY. Dirty glasses and plates were left on beaches and at pools and never cleaned. Tables and beach chairs were not washed down. ROOM: When we arrived at our room, no towels had been provided and the frig was not stocked. The remote control did not work and the AC was not blowing cool air. After trying to get ahold of the front office for over an hour, we ran into a butler who called the "right" people to fix the problems. WIFI is a JOKE: They advertise online that they have wifi in all the rooms. This is false advertising. The ONLY place where the WIFI works some of the time is in the lobby. POOR SERVICE: They need more workers to clean, work the front desk, maintain the bar, etc. When we needed anything, it took over an hour to get it (if they even showed up) and if you don't want to tip every time, don't even waste your time.
