Blue Haven Hotel

The hotel

This charming boutique hotel boasts a fascinating history. Built on the ruined remains of Fort King George in the 1940s, Blue Haven Hotel attracted the film stars of the 40s and 50s, and was also a location for several films, including Swiss Family Robinson. All rooms have breath-taking ocean views and are very well equipped. Resort amenities include the colonial Shutters on the Bay Restaurant and No Problem Beach Bar, which is renowned for its fantastic location on Bacolet Bay, where Robinson Crusoe was supposedly washed ashore. When we asked for something which was not on the menu it was no problem. When we asked for special cocktails it was no problem. When the staff come down to the palm tree fringed beach with a couple of cold beers for you without being asked it makes you feel special. Sure the menu is not extensive and that gives you the opportunity to visit one of the other great eateries on the island. Tobago is an idyllic Tropical paradise. Sure the hotel needs some work doing on it and it suffers from a lack of clientele because of mixed reviews and the government not promoting tourism. If you want a relaxing, hassle free, personalised holiday I strongly recommend Blue Haven. If you want impersonal mass tourism in a sterile environment this is not the place for you.We shall return! I’ve read past reviews and yes, Tobago and the hotels are suffering with low visitor numbers so the island and accommodation have a slightly neglected feel. But focusing on the positives of Blue Haven; Excellent, personalised service (thank you Ritchie and Martin). The best beach on the island imo. Staff happily bring down sun loungers to the dessert island beach. Water and waves great fun. Breakfasts plentiful (fresh fruit, great coffee, twining teas, cereals, pancakes, 4 types of bread to toast, delicious, piping hot freshly cooked breakfast (thank you George, George and Amanda). Amazing views from the restaurant. Great pool. Clean and bigger than most of the other hotels’ pools. Lovely sun deck above crashing waves for cocktails and sunsets. Rooms....very spacious. We had interconnecting rooms with 4 poster beds, great mattresses, good linen, beautiful hardwood floors, seating area, great tv channels, excellent WiFi connection, cleaned beautiful daily, tea and coffee, fridge, safe, hot water. Balcony with amazing sea views. In comparison with Barbados, for example, this hotel is fantastic value for money. Hotel is on a large plot, has a big beach and big pool and spacious rooms! No fighting for sunbeds or putting towels out to reserve your place on the beach! When we return to Tobago, we will stay here again. Read less

And we were so happy that we did! The hotel had its own beach which was perfect for us. It was peaceful and quiet which made it feel like a real vacation getaway. Definitely recommend renting a car so that you can explore the island and go see other places as well. The hotel had its own private parking for guests on site which was great. We had no complaints about the food in the restaurant and loved the fact that they served fresh fish everyday. On our last day we asked if they could make us lobster for dinner and it was delicious! Thanks Blue Haven!! Read less

We spent 4 nights at the hotel which was 4 nights too many. Shabby, run on a shoe string, repetitive cuisine, the hotel has not seen money spent on it for 10 plus years. A great shame as the location is beautiful but all together a shocking experience and definitely not the 4 stars awarded to it in certain publications. Avoid like the plague.
