We dropped in to get our souvenirs. Well worth a wander. You need to book for high tea, so we settled for the Singapore cafe and shared some delicious cakes and kopi. It is a lovely grand place, with modern buildings now its backdrop. The coffee shop staff were friendly and helpful.

Fulfilled a long held ambition by spending a couple of nights in this iconic hotel. Checking in was straight forward & carried out in our suite , The room was spacious with a luxurious bathroom . Very comfortable bed. We had a large balcony area overlooking a tree lined courtyard. Breakfast service was patchy. Had to chase up my husband’s grapefruit juice & fresh cutlery wasn’t supplied for my second course so had to reuse the originals Got back to the hotel around 8.45pm & asked which hotel restaurants were open . Reception advised we would have to go back outside & walk along the pavement to access The Courtyard restaurant. Really didn’t feel like having to go back out on the street so we settled for some bar snacks in the Writer’s bar. The same directions were given when we wanted to go for a drink at the Long Bar - at our pre booked table. On our last morning we wandered round the grounds & found that both the above mentioned facilities could be accessed from within the hotel . Why would a hotel of this stature send its residents out onto the street when they could remain within the confines of the hotel ?? Loved the Pool area & bar. Clarence treated us like royalty. We had an issue with 2 young girls filming & photographing us incessantly, there were also young children present in the pool. We brought it to Clarence’s attention & a manager promptly appeared & persuaded the young ladies to refrain from filming the guests. I did get the feeling that the building is as much of a tourist attraction as a hotel but our stay didn’t disappoint. Read less
