The hotel

With a stunning sunset location, flanked by UNESCO World Heritage Site Le Morne Peak, this LUX* resort also overlooks an endless stretch of golden beach. Sheltered from trade winds and on the quiet side of the island, it’s an ideal place to catch up on some R&R. Landscaped gardens surround you, dotted with five swimming pools — select your favourite and pull up a lounger. Romantic in feel, the hotel is also ideal for families, with a superb kids' club offering activities such as treasure hunts, art classes and tennis lessons. Water sports abound, try your hand at snorkelling, water-skiing or kite-surfing perhaps. If you prefer dry land, no worries — team up with friends for a game of volleyball or hire a bike to explore the lush interior. Come sundown, the pace picks up slightly. Head to The Bar for cocktails and live music, or while away the hours in East, feasting on delicious Thai cuisine. Set right beside the ocean, The Beach is also highly recommended, serving up Italian fare in a relaxed setting.

I have given this hotel a 5 star rating for the hotel itself, the location, food, pools, the attention to detail for the comfort those staying there and a majority of staff. Loved having a call button on the sunshades to order a light lunch rather than leaving the beautiful beach to change for lunch. The white sand seemed to go on for ever. We enjoyed swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, swimming with dolphins and turtles, two of our group went diving and four even made it to the top of Le Morne. We also used the spa and gym. The local flora and fauna took our breath away and the youngest member of the group (7 years old) had a fantastic time watching the wildlife. I want to give a special mention to Isabel and Hans (think I’ve got the names right), and to the young waitress who worked from ‘ice cream’ bar - she was a credit to your hotel and was never phased by the requests from our group, she always had a smile, a delight to chat to. This hotel is wonderful with sunsets to live long in your memory. Here comes the BUT: I feel it is much more suited to couples, or groups of four as some staff struggled in dealing with larger groups, this gave us the impression we were ignored at times. It was much easier for staff to serve a coffee pot for 2 rather than 3/4 pots plus still and sparking water at breakfast; the same went for lunchtime at The Beach as taking an order for 2 people was far simpler than for 10. It can be annoying when couples come into the restaurant after you to watch them being served with drink and food before your orders are taken. The same complaint goes for the main bar. We have been to hotels who have much better systems of serving drinks to those who are waiting at the bar as opposed to those having waiter service from tables. We went for one last drink before leaving and 20 minutes later, still waiting - then our taxis arrived as a waiter arrived with the tray. Don’t be put off if you are reading this - we had a magical experience, the hotel just needs a few tweaks to make is 100% perfect as at the moment it’s 99%. Read less

We arrived after spending 5 days at Lux Belle Mare. First impressions were great, the surroundings are just beautiful. We got given a room by the Ilot pool, which for us was brilliant as it was a quieter pool and kids had it to themselves most of the time. Negatives of this area are that there were only 2 side tables for approx 30 sun beds and I didn’t find the staff overly attentive. One guy (silver teeth) watched me struggle with 6 heavy towels and bag. Lovely infused water supplied everyday but would be nice if they kept it topped up with fresh ice as it got warm very quickly. First night was a huge disappointment as we couldn’t get into a restaurant and we didn’t want spend out on the buffet when we’d had a late lunch, so room service was our only option. The other issue was there wasn’t any childrens meals offered on the menu so off we go to reception. She basically told me that’s just the way it is, so I asked to speak to the manager. Gale was the manager on duty that night and he was great, I explained one of my children only eats specific food and he sorted it out for us and had a lovely meal in our room :/ Luckily the film on the beach complete with popcorn soon cheered us up. I generally found the management really helpful and professional, shame I can’t say the same for the rest of the staff. They weren’t rude but they didn’t go out of their way to help. One morning I enquired about getting a taxi for that day, I was told they supply a 4 & 6 seater taxi, I asked if I needed to book the 6 seater and they said no. Later in the morning when heading out on our excursion we asked for the 6 seater and were told it was no longer available that day and would instead need to use two 4 seater taxis which was double the price of the 6 seater I had asked about. As I had specifically asked and told I didn’t need to book I was not impressed, again once mgmt was involved this was quickly resolved and a 6 seater was provided. There was an Easter time table which staff seemed to know nothing about when I asked questions. Kids club staff were brilliant and offered a range of activities including an Easter egg hunt on Sunday. The spa was nice but a little disjointed and no where near as nice as Belle Mare, but did offer the nicest coconut and vanilla tea. The biggest let down for us was breakfast, the quality and choice of food was not a patch on Belle Mare. Birds landing on the pastries was very off putting and the egg lady basically threw your eggs on the plate unless you were French and then she was polite. They did have a blender which allowed me to make myself a smoothie, and I added sorbet to it so it was colder. Although most mornings I had to remind them to put the sorbets out and one morning was told they didn’t have any available that day. The F&B manager was in the restaurant so asked him and he arranged for them to be put out, so basically it seemed like just couldn’t be bothered to get them out that day. Evening buffet was lovely, and the pastry chef made me a special dairy free dessert. The Beach restaurant was also great. We went to East twice, first time amazing and second time was okay think it may have been a different chef? Ruth at the Art shed was super, she went above and beyond to arrange activities for us. Myself and the mums learnt Macrame and my daughter tie dyed one of her own t-shirts with Ruth’s help. Overall we had a lovely time but there’s room for improvement. Read less

I had a fantastic stay at this hotel. Staff were welcoming, friendly, helpful. The room was clean, spacious and very comfortable (Junior Ocean Suite). There was a good range of activities available, or there was always the option to step outside my room and onto the beach to chill, and relax in the sun/sea. Staff spoke a good range of languages, so not being proficient in French wasn't a problem, and there was a variety of food to tempt all tastes - maybe not "haute cuisine" but, given that they were providing a mainly buffet service for a largish number of people, the quality was very good. There were also other dining options within the hotel, such as the Thai restaurant and Japanese sushi, as well as private dining by the pool or on the beach. I had worries about being in such a beautiful, romantic spot on my own, but was made to feel very much at home - unlike some experiences I've had when travelling, where being solo often means being invisible. Some reviews I've seen have mentioned the lack of "nightlife" in the hotel. Everyone has different expectations for their holiday experience, but the relatively peaceful family atmosphere of the main hotel was fine for me - and the bar always had a nice "cocktail hour" buzz about it. There also were organised events such as beach barbeque and rum tasting, which gave the opportunity to be more sociable. I hope to go back again sometime soon. Read less

Top. Beautiful beach, lovely cosy rooms. Excellent helpful service by most staff. I can’t wait to return. The backdrop of Le Morne mountain is amazing. The vibe of the place is really nice. Totally felt at home from start to end. This is now our place in Mauritius
