The hotel

Waiting for your drinks to arrive as you laze on white sands, shaded by a coconut palm. Taking a dip in a lagoon pool among tropical plants and dining and drinking terraces. Stepping out on your balcony to soak in endless sea views before heading out for dinner. This may be the stuff of daydreams, but it’s the true island experience guests come to enjoy when staying at the adults-only Solana Beach. It does deliver a delicious cliché, but this hotel also comes with its own unique twists, like the nod to the sixties and seventies in your spacious guestroom, which is otherwise thoroughly modern. It also gives you the option to do absolutely nothing – or to pack your days with cycling, diving, snorkelling, and even complimentary glass-bottom boat trips, and your nights with island entertainment and meals in three delectable restaurants.

Wow, wow, wow! What an amazing place. We arrived in the morning, knowing we couldn’t access our room until 2 but we given access to the bar and the dining room from 12 as well as the pool area and of course the beach! The views from reception are amazing and as the rooms are sea facing I imagine the views from them all were all as wonderful as ours. ( room 1110, ground floor near the bar which is quiet after 11pm). We were all inclusive and had a wide range of drinks available to us as well as other drinks available at a supplement. The buffet restaurant food was good and varied with some dishes repeated for example some salads, main courses and cakes . There was a theme each night such as Mauritian food, Chinese, hunters buffet ( heavy on the meat choices!) etc. There are other menus available at a supplement , served in the Polemo restaurant with themes such as seafood platter but we found the buffet more than adequate . For those checking other reviews, rest assured the decking is being repaired! I’d noticed a lot of comments regarding the decking.. it’s not that bad and as I said it’s being sorted. The rooms ( we moved to another on our last day for late check out about £80 but worth it!) are nicely decorated, very clean ( thank you Veena!) and the mini fridge topped up daily ( water, beer, coke, Fanta & sprite . Robes and slippers and big, full containers of shampoo, shower gel, hand wash and lotion. The biggest bed I have ever seen, very comfortable and lovely dark curtains. We’re not ones for volleyball etc . You’re invited if you’re about but not badgered to join in. The evening shows were ok. Hard to cater for such a mixed audience. Lots of French speaking guests, South African and some British . We just sat playing cards and working our way through the cocktail menu 😉 The staff were all fantastic. Great smiles and welcoming . Especially ( but not only!) Christophe in the restaurant, Laura ( queen of the breakfast eggs!) Shane and Andy behind the bar and Anash ( I think… bigggg smiler) serving We gave occasional tips as we went 100 Mauritian rupees (£1.70) or 200. Never expected but gratefully received The beach is beautiful, sea is warm and perfect for snorkelling but you will need sea shoes Safe and pleasant to walk outside, we walked through the park to Belle Mare. About 45 mins with everyone waving and saying Bonjour. We had such a wonderful time we’re already planning our next visit. If you have room in your case please take some dog biscuits for the 3 dogs by the beach.. the long haired one is the gentlest soul, the bigger short haired very timid and the pup just adorable. Big Thankyou to the whole staff. What a wonderful place you offer Read less

None the less I would highly recommend anyone and everyone to book at Solana. Read less

This hotel ticked our expectations with a very laid back typical Mauritius feel. Everything was very natural, a perfect place to unwind and relax. This was our third visit to Mauritius but our first visit to this hotel. We upgraded to the junior suite as we were celebrating a big birthday and it was worth every penny. Room 3119 was ground floor with an amazing view and superb decking area. Although the furnishings were a little tired, the bed was comfy and everything was clean. A big thank you to Gaytree, our cleaner, who did a great job looking after us and keeping our room lovely and clean during our stay. The grounds of the hotel were immaculate and we loved all the little seating areas spread throughout the gardens. The pool was on the small side, but adequate enough for the amount of guests and to be fair we spent most of our days on the beach. Some reviews have criticised the repetitiveness of food but we found enough choices to see us through the 12 nights of our stay, although we could eat a curry every day! I would definitely recommend going all inclusive as not even water is free of charge at this hotel. The only thing that disappointed us was the fact that the theme nights in the Pomelo restaurant were not included in the all inclusive so we worried that if we booked a table we would end up being charged. The staff are a credit to this hotel and we enjoyed some fun conversations during our stay. A big thanks to Christophe, Rakesh,Rita, Aantie and Ravi for their service on the bar and in the restaurant. I wish I could remember all the others by name as every single one deserves a mention😊 Two improvements that could be implemented would be a tap at the far end of the beach to wash our feet…unless there was one but we didn’t find it, and if the dress code for dinner is smart/casual then turn away those who look as if they have just come from the beach. Our first impressions when we arrived were a little mixed due to tiredness on our part and the introduction to the hotel by a rather abrupt lady on the reception, but thanks to Yanish, his lovely smile and willingness to help us, created a very positive experience. The staff were great though and made sure we had a very enjoyable stay. We had the most amazing meal in the canopy by the beach which really was such a wonderful experience and Jay made us feel very well looked after and the food was divine. I am coeliac and was incredibly well looked after at breakfast with GF pancakes and toast. They also had GF toasties for lunch and pasta for dinner. The hotel itself is nice and lots of lovely places to relax, beautiful gardens and private quiet areas. The pool isn't anything special and lots of broken boards around it but they are fixing it. The rooms are old and tired in desperate need of updating but we slept well and it was all functional just no luxury. Read less

The Solana Hotel was absolutely fabulous from the moment we set foot on their premises. The food was daringly appetizing at all times. Every evening there was a new theme so the food was consistently interesting and delicious. We particularly enjoyed the Sushi on the second night we were there but there was always an abundance of everything. We made friends with a number of the employees (and fellow South Africans, British, and a special German couple) and would like to mention a few of whom I can remember: Sunil (arranged a memorable seafood dinner on the beach for a 60th birthday), Christopher and Nitin were in attendance and truly professional on that evening, Julie and Harshit (waiter in training) always made us feel like we were their only guests, not to mention Aarti who kept everyone on their toes. A sterling job was performed by all and always with a smile on their faces. The Solana is highly recommended. The bedrooms were also professionally looked after with a new surprise on the bed every time we walked in. My friend with whom I travelled had never been to Mauritius and he has confirmed if he ever gets the opportunity to return he'll go back to the Solana Hotel without hesitation. We had a thoroughly enjoyable visit which we will never forget. Read less
