The Beekman

Financial District, New York

Virgin rating

The hotel

Built in the same decade as the Brooklyn Bridge, The Beekman had stiff competition when it came to architectural neighbours – but its glamour and grace granted it kudos with the building buffs of the 19th century – and today. This skyscraper’s kept its drama with its marble entrance, Persian rug-slung lobby, and Victorian balustrade-draped atrium, which stretches nine storeys skyward before being capped with a glass pyramid. It’s not just opulent in design though, with its ‘nothing’s-too-much-trouble’ service and dining scene mirroring its old-world splendour and new-world luxury. Two of Manhattan’s finest names are behind The Beekman’s restaurants: Tom Colicchio reinterprets old and new classics at Temple Court, while Keith McNally recreates French brasserie elegance at Augustine. Or you could join the socialites (and sometimes celebs) at The Alley Cat for cocktails and Japanese Izakaya comfort food.

I had high hopes for my stay here, and while I wasn’t majorly disappointed, there is something lacking that really made it feel more 4 star service and that there is cost cutting going on. The good parts: The hotel is in a good location with easy access to sights, the subway, Brooklyn Bridge and so on. The building itself is beautiful and a lot more architecturally interesting that many others in NYC. The rooms are of a good size, and everything was in good condition and the beds comfortable. The not so good parts: The service was just average, for the first two nights there was no house keeping or turndown. The person who I assume was the restaurant manager, if not all day, certainly for breakfast, was more interested in ‘being fabulous’ as she strutted about straightening tables and generally not speaking particularly nice to the waiters. This so much so as to even make me feel a little uncomfortable. Each time we ate we ‘had to see the host’ to get a table, despite it being pretty much empty, as it was seemingly below her to show guests to a suitable one. This kind of person has no business working in a customer service roll. There was blue sticky table all over the walls in the corridor to our room ¯_(ツ)_/¯ no idea what that was all about, but looked like something you’d see in a cheep motel, not a 5 star iconic one. There was no kettle or coffee machine in the room, I mean come on, is it really that expensive or are you going to lose that much money by doing this? Also, be careful what room you’re put in, there was banging music from their speakeasy bar until 3-4am on 2 of the nights we stayed. Just overall, service seemed to be lacking, definitely not compatible to Asian or European counterparts. Read less

This hotel is well situated downtown and has amazing architecture and history. It is so refreshing to open the door from your room and instead of seeing a low lit long hallway, you see a light filled atrium with crafted rails and mahogany doors lining the outskirts of each floor. It really is a sight. Breakfast at Temple Court is delicious and is set amongst antique furnishings that come across as both heavy and quirky. It's a busy hotel but the staff is friendly and eager to help. Our room seemed slightly deficient in the lighting department but that might be my aging eyes. The bathroom is well appointed. I will stay here again and recommend without hesitation to others. Read less
