Hotel Del Coronado

Family trip, stayed at the Shore House and loved it. The staff were exceptionally helpful, rooms spotlessly clean. We had housekeeping every day and they did a full clean. The grounds provide plenty to do (food trucks/restaurants/bike rentals/pools and the beach) but the location is also ideal for venturing into San Diego. Would absolutely stay again. Read less

We only went for a day visit; did not overnight. My daughter's first time to visit the Del. She loved the Victorian style, when you walk into the lobby you feel like its something out of Titanic. The main hotel is super cool as was the open hallways (the main building is under construction). What was open was cool including the main souvenir shop. When you go downstairs the new modern shops seem like out of Coney Island (somewhat odd and touristy). Went outside to the back facing the ocean and it was nice. It was cloudy and cold so we didn't venture on the sand but I imagine it would be really cool on a nice, hot summer day. Beach is expansive and inviting. We returned to the lobby and sat on the rocking chairs outside to check out prices for a room. Expedia had it for over $1000 a room at various parts of the year. Since the rooms look way more modern (it's Hilton branded) I'm not so sure if they were worth it for that price (for us) There wasn't a whole lot of customer service greeting us either at reception or the lobby so had I paid $1000 for Easter weekend, I might be pissed. I would like to see the hotel completely finished from construction to see if there is a price change (cheaper?) otherwise it would just be another day trip to visit the Del. My first experience at this hotel and it was not a good one. There is a lot of construction happening at this facility and it seems to have all the staff on edge. My first impression was a very gruff person claiming to be a valet who demanded my car key upon arrival. I had paid for self-parking ahead of time, but he would not relent--even when I told him I would just be a moment because I was checking in. Strike One. Next, I was told the parking garage I had just passed at the main entrance was not for "regular guests". The self-parking garage I had to use was over 1/2 mile away in the main construction zone, completely on the other side of the property from my room; but I could "upgrade" to valet service for $75/night (plus tip, of course). I decided to just stay with my pre-paid self parking because of the idiot valet I had just experienced. Strike Two The next day, my family and I went to the adjacent beach for what we thought would be a relaxing afternoon. We found 3 comfy beach chairs available (there were about 40 empty chairs) and we were having a nice time. However, about 30 minutes in, a very bitchy hotel staff member came up and said "you cannot use these chairs...these are by reservation only, you have to pay $50 per person, or you have to leave!" I said, "we are guests at this hotel, there are no signs saying these chairs are extra, and we paid a resort fee". He didn't care, he said "take it up with my manager and leave!" Strike Three I had wanted to try this hotel for over 30 years, and was excited I was finally able to do so; however, I will never stay at this property ever again! The staff needs a wholesale attitude adjustment and a few classes on customer service. Most hotels include beach chairs, activities and gear in the cost of the "Resort Fees"; please be aware, this hotel does not! I did speak with a manager and was able to get her to provide the beach chairs at no cost. She also apologized for the demeanor of those we interacted with; but the damage had already been done. Additionally, there are very few dining options available at this property; those that are provided are extremely expensive. Also, no room service for food is provided....I did not see this listed anywhere on the hotel website. Bottom line, I would save your money for other hotels in San Diego that actually care about their customers (Pacific Beach area for example). Read less

We have stayed at The Del a few times and have always enjoyed the iconic property ... however, we were sorely disappointed this week ... granted it was Spring/Easter break and the hotel was mobbed plus the main building is under total renovation (no rooms in the main building). Our disappointment began at reception ... no one stopped us from lugging our bags up the stairs (since no rooms in the old building, we would not be staying there). At reception, no greeting like "Welcome to The Del," "Have you stayed with us before?" "How was your trip?" Instead, we were greeted with "I need your ID. " Impressive customer service training (Hilton)? We asked for an ocean view room -- "All sold out. You have a resort view room." Trying to be hopeful and thinking the gardens are pretty and a view of Coronado Island wouldn't be bad. Anyway, what do you want for $586 + taxes/night? So we lugged our bags back down the steps and headed to our room Check out our "resort view" below...we could have complained further, but at some point you just get tired of battling. Sadly, it will be a long time if ever we return to what used to be our favorite spot in San Diego. Read less

I know prices are going up but some are over the top. Examples: Wine- Finca DeCero Malbec - hotel cost $12.50 menu price $72,Rombauer Chardonnay - hotel cost $25 menu price $172. 6 times plus markup grossly exceeds industry norms - its gouging! Another example: Caesar Salad $20 and 6 pcs of shrimp add another $20, a $40 salad, really!!!! As beautiful as the Del is it's now certainly for tourists, locals beware! Read less
